FinancialsDespite the global market turmoil BBK reports49% growth in core performance and maintainsits capital adequacy at above 20%BBK reported significant improvement in its core operatingperformance for the first 9 months of the year, resulting in net performanceof BD 47.9 million, an increase of 49% over the same period last year.We reported significant improvement inour core operating performance for thefirst 9 months of the year, resulting innet performance of BD 47.9 million, anincrease of 49% over the same periodlast year. This significant improvementin performance was impacted by theadditional exceptional provisions taken inthe third quarter of 2008 of BD 16.6 millionraising the total provisions since thebeginning of the year to BD 30.6 millionprovided against certain investments, dueto the recent developments in the financialmarkets, reducing the bank profits toBD 20.1 million. The provisionstaken reflect the bank’s conservativeassumptions for valuation approach torespond to the adverse global marketconditions, and to prudently provideagainst such investments. With theadditional provisions made during thisquarter, we are now at a very comfortablelevel of provisions.Despite the competitive pressure and ourprudent policies on credit, interest andliquidity risk, net interest income showeda positive trend growing by BD 3.0 millioncompared to September 2007 to reachBD 40.1 million, which improved theoverall net interest spread. Non-interestincome also grew impressively by 65%to BD 33.2 million compared to last year, mainly through foreign exchange incomewith growth of 98%, and fee income withgrowth of 30%.Despite the increase in operating cost by10% compared to September 2007, thecore cost-to-income ratio improved from40% to 36% over 2007. We have recentlytaken the initiative to adjust the staffbenefits to world-class banks in theregion. In spite of the upheavals of the financialmarkets, we have not reduced ourpace for improving our services andmodernizing our facilities, and continuedto invest in customer service. To spreadour reach to customers, we have recentlyopened a new branch in the “Bahrain CityCentre Mall”. The strategic expansionplan continues in 2009 with scheduledopening of three more financial malls inIsa Town, West Riffa, and Exhibition Road. Our balance sheet grew to BD 2,178million, an increase of BD 95 millionwhen compared to September 2007. Theincrease resulted from a strong underlyingbusiness growth driven by the increase innet loans and advances by 19% to reachBD 1,349 million. Customer deposits havealso grown by BD 30 million in the thirdquarter to reach BD 1,127 million, despitesigns of financial meltdown, reflecting thecustomers’ confidence in us.As a result of following a cautious andconservative approach to manage therisk of assets and liabilities, we maintaina very comfortable liquidity position whileour capital adequacy ratio is maintainedat slightly above 20%, well above theregulatory requirements.Commenting on the Bank’s results,Mr. Murad Ali Murad, Chairman, said “Weare proud that the bank has achievedexcellent core performance, with all thebusiness indicators showing significantgrowth. However the current turmoilin the financial market is unprecedentand hence we had to make exceptionalprovisions during 2008 which assisted usin achieving this result .”Mr. A.Karim Bucheery, CE, said“The excellent improvement of theperformance was a result ofimplementing an aggressive strategicplan in the strategic period, achievingmost of the business plans and initiativesfor that period. Currently, we aredeveloping a new Corporate Strategy forthe next period, with more diversified andaggressive business plans, promisinghigher growth and better customerservice.”“Despite the major initiatives that wereintroduced during August 2008 tosubstantially improve staff benefits, thebank cost-to-income ratio has in factimproved over the same period last year.”he added.Commenting on the forecast for the lastquarter of 2008, the Chairman said that heis quite confident that the bank will poststrong performance notwithstanding thecurrent difficulties in the market, especiallygiven the fact that both the loans andinvestments portfolio of the bank has veryconservatively been provided for.2
