FAITH FORMATION COMMISSION fosters the life-long growth, of all, in the Catholic Faith.University of Notre Dame to Honor Founders of SPREDSt. Edna's SPRED community is happy to announce that the founders of SPRED, Sister Susanne Gallagher, S.P.; SisterMary Therese Harrington, S.H.; and Rev. James H. McCarthy will receive the University of Notre Dame's 2013Laetare Medal, the oldest and most prestigious honor given to American Catholics, at Notre Dame's 168th UniversityCommencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19."Sisters Gallagher and Harrington and Fr. McCarthy have summoned the Church to a crucial and too often overlookedministry," said Notre Dame's president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. "Insisting that a developmental disability neithertempers Christ's invitation nor restricts one's right to respond, they have ushered countless people to their rightful placeat the Eucharistic table."SPRED's ministry began in 1960, when Fr. McCarthy, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, began working withparents, special educators and catechist volunteers of several parishes to make Catholic liturgies and catechesis moreaccessible to children and adult parishioners with developmental disabilities. Sister Harrington, a member of the Societyof Helpers, joined him in 1963 to help with catechetical and administrative work, and Sister Gallagher, a member of theSisters of Providence, joined them in 1967 assisting both with administration and the training of new special catechists.Energized by the renewed emphasis on faith formation in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, SPRED's ministryexpanded beyond Chicago in the 1960's and now the 52-year-old network administers faith formation and sacramentalinitiation programs for people with special needs in 28 Catholic dioceses and 200 parishes nationwide as well as smallfaith groups in several other countries including England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, Malta and Mexico. We are all so thrilled that these three wonderful people are being honored for their tireless dedication. The medal theywill receive bears the Latin inscription, "Magna est veritas et prevalebit" ("Truth is mighty, and it shall prevail"). It isawarded annually to a Catholic who has "illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity."God has truly blessed us with their service.St. Edna's SPRED program has been welcoming 6 to 10 year olds with special challenges into our loving communityfor the past 5 years. Please join us at our next SPRED Mass at 9:30 on June 9.PentecostToday, Saint Paul says the Holy Spiritmakes us God’s adopted sons and daughterswho cry out “Abba, Father!”When has the celebration of the Mass ledme to an especially strong sense of belongingto God’s family?“There are differentkinds of spiritual giftsbut the same Spirit;there are differentforms of service butthe same Lord…”What is the Spiritprompting you to do?Be courageous and act on it!
