publisher’s noteHotels are no longer just places to grab a night’s sleep when away from home. Lookaround the region and it is clear that new properties now have personalities of theirown. They become a physical representation of the characteristics of their brand, andassume distinct quirks and affectations. People now go to hotels not just to stay, butto be enveloped in an experience. It’s fitting therefore that we dedicate a whole spreadto the men and women who, through their work as architects and designers, bring tolife the personality of the buildings they work on. From owners, developers, interiordesigners and management teams, this issue’s Architecture & Design feature sings thepraises of the people behind some of Kuala Lumpur’s cool new properties.Build, And TheyWill ComeJennifer OngFounder / Publisherfast as new hotels aresprouting up in Malaysia, sois HAPA Indonesia gearingupfor the big day. To be held in August2013, in the beautiful island of the Gods,Bali, HAPA Indonesia nominees number50 at present, but seeing as it is aninaugural series created to give Indonesianproperties the feel of the Hospitality AsiaPlatinum Awards, I believe there is a goodlikelihood of many more nominees tocome in the future. As it stands, many ofthe nominees come from a whole newpool of never-fielded personnel, whichwill bring some fresh new faces to thecategories, while also highlighting theproperties they are attached to – some ofthem completely new entrants to HAPA.The HAPA excitement continues thisyear after Indonesia. HAPA MalaysiaSeries 2013-2015 will also see a few newcategories introduced in order to keepthe Awards as relevant to the industryas possible. The Special award for HAPABest Lifestyle Living is one which will benominated by the HAPA panel of judges. It will be awarded to the hotel or resortthat provides a new take on the definitionof lifestyle design which enhances thehospitality experience. The AwardsPresentation Gala Dinner will be heldin November 2013, with Make-A-WishFoundation Malaysia being the selectedcharity. The success of the inaugural HAPA-GAB has also set a milestone for theindustry which we will be personallytrying to surpass. It is such an amazingfeeling to actually see our clients andpartners reaping the benefits of a greatevent. In the case of brewery giantsGuinness Anchor Berhad, their eventwhich honours players in the F&B arena, has seen an increase in awareness of howgreater service standards can improve theproductivity and profitability of a business. To this end, after the first HAPA-GABawards, GAB’s HERO Academy saw a surgein the number of participants who werebeginning to realize what a competitiveadvantage HERO Training was.The part we play in making thehospitality and F&B industry more vibrant, more competent and more attractive tonew job seekers continues to inspire meto bring Hospitality Asia and HAPA togreater heights. I believe when we builda brand, we build also better experiencesfor ourselves. In our new capacity of eventconsultants and managers, we have alsodesigned and managed Lamborghini’s50th Anniversary Gala Dinner. Our longexperience in the business gives us theknack of knowing what works where, and this is one of the biggest plus pointsin our favour when we are called on bythe industry to assist in creating greatexperiences.Feel free to drop me a line atpublisher@wapublishing.asia to shareyour successes with me.

hapa csrMaking WishesCome TrueOne of the defining points of the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA)is Corporate Social Responsibility. At every series of the Awards, HAPAchooses a charity or an organization to work with. The establishment isalways a local organization or a chapter of an international charity basedin the country which a HAPA Series is held in.APA Malaysia’s charity of choice this year is Make-A-Wish® Malaysia. The Malaysian affiliate was launchedin 2010 and on average it grants two new wishes everymonth. Make-A-Wish® Malaysia constantly receivesnew referrals and with only one staff member, the organizationrelies on dedicated volunteers to help grant wishes and raisefunds for their mission. Make-A-Wish® Malaysia currently has 30volunteers. The majority of them are trained as Wish Granters.HAPA has selected Make-A-Wish® Malaysia in order to assistthem in raising funds to grant more wishes in conjunction withWorld Wish Day 2013. Make-A-Wish® Malaysia grants the wishesof children with life-threatening medical conditions in order toenrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.Malaysia’s WishDish Campaign is a Make A Wish programme, and the organization’s own initiative. HAPA Malaysia is supportingthe programme, and hoping to increase awareness of theprogramme. Every single cent derived from the WishDish Campaignwill go to the Make A Wish foundation.HAPA Malaysia’s role in this exercise is to leverage on our longassociation with the F&B industry by approaching restaurantsunder our database to be part of Make-A-Wish® Malaysia’sWishDish Campaign. The campaign is to run for the whole monthof April and will see selected dining establishments donating50 percent of the proceeds of a selected dish from their menuto Make-A-Wish® Malaysia. Once an establishment has agreedto be part of the WishDish Campaign, an A-card and print-outannouncing the WishDish will be given to the restaurant to placeon their tables. The selected establishments will be announced andfeatured in various mass and social media, with press conferenceswith the presence of the establishments’ representatives to beheld before and after the campaign, in order to highlight selectedchildren whose wishes will be granted through the proceeds.Restaurants participating in the WishDish Campaign can beanywhere in Malaysia, as Make-A-Wish® Malaysia benefits childrenfrom all over the country. The campaign will run throughout April2013. For more information on HAPA’s charity of choice, log on towww.makeawish.org.my.11

Kuala Lumpur’s BestKept SecretThere’s a lot to be said about a property which does not aspire to be the bestfive-star hotel suites in the country, or even in Malaysia’s capital. Daniel Chong,General Manager of Pacific Regency Hotel Suites distilled the essence of whatit meant to be truly great when he told his team that the only mission theproperty would have was that it had to give every guest who checked in a beststay experience.ll things considered, it is not too lofty a goal. In its20-year existence, the property has carved out aniche for itself as being a surprising oasis of chiccomfort for travellers wanting a little bit more thana regular hotel room. As far back as 2005, the travel communitywas already sharing their stellar experiences at this Malaysianproperty. Not only was it located right across from one of KualaLumpur’s best known landmarks, the KL Tower; it was also closer tothe nature sanctuary that is the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve than tothe hot tarmac strip of the main Sultan Ismail. It gave travellers arespite from the neon glare, with the option of a few minutes’ walkto be back in the game, whether it be high level business meetingsin the city centre, a shopping marathon on Bintang Walk, or a hotnight on the town in Changkat Bukit Bintang.A New Take On ComfortLocation aside, there was also the hotel’s list of accolades rangingfrom the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards Best Service Residence2010-2012 and Agoda.com Gold Circle Award 2012. Anotherattraction was the size of the rooms, ranging from the stylishand luxurious 409 square feet Deluxe to 603 square feet suites, right on to the redefined comfort and sophistication of the 668square foot Regency Junior Suite. Needless to say that all suitesare tastefully furnished in warm contemporary tones, with cozylighting, generous wardrobes and spacious bathrooms.Time under the radar has proved the property’s resilience, and it has refreshed its product offering with six newly builtfloors of 131 luxurious rooms, complementing the original 152.Like the older rooms, the new units all offer a sweeping view ofthe surrounding Kuala Lumpur skyline. The new rooms retain thehotel’s signature style of warm functionalism with a contemporaryedge, with much thought having gone into the longevity of therooms, their functionality and the conveniences to the long-stayguest. Some of the high points include full latex mattresses forthe complete omission of bed bugs, mites or any such travellers’scourge, memory foam toppers on the beds, high thread countcotton sheets and duvets, 42” LCD flat screen TV, iPod dockingIt’s all about location: Pacific Regency is located just across from KL Tower.16 on the cover
