STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL strives to inspire our community to express gratitude for God’s many giftsthrough service to God and one another.HEARING AND DOINGIt is made clear throughout the Gospels and Epistles that our discipleship, as followers of Jesus, is not overuntil our bodily death. In today’s second reading we are urged, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only” (James1:22). Discipleship is hard. Sometimes we have “reasons” why we cannot do things—we are too tired, too old, toosick, too needy. We are too busy with work, with children, with other responsibilities. Yet some of the best“prayers” are people confined by illness or disability. Some of the wisest listeners are the elderly, who have a lifetimeof patience and wisdom to draw on. Some of the most generous givers are those who have endured povertyand suffering themselves. Some of the most admired organizers are those who delegate and let other people shine.And let us not forget the heroes who put their lives on the line in time of crisis. Not everyone is called to heroism,but all of us are called to live generously and selflessly. The opportunities are endless: in our families, our parish,our neighborhood or town, and in places around the world. Try to balance prayer, action and financial giving. Abusy mother with three toddlers can hardly spend hours in prayer or at church. A man who must work two jobs tosupport his family has limited time to volunteer, and a person on a tiny fixed income cannot give large donations tothe church or charity. However, the busy mother can talk to God as she chases after her little ones. The hardworkingman can help with an occasional parish event, and the person with a limited income can put a steady few dollarsin the collection each week.
