he Red Rains swept over theworld of Argaia, poisoningthe creatures that dwelt there, and from these rains thechimera were born. Some say the chimerawere a curse upon humanity for theircrimes against the children of dragons, but whatever the reason for their birth, the chimera visited destruction uponthe world, and civilization shuddered. These monstrous foes slaughtered armies, devoured townships, and despoiled theground and seas. Humans withdrew to thelargest of cities, and these they fortifiedagainst the horrors of the world outside.Ages passed and humanity's future lookedbleak. But then a new power arose toconfront the chimera. They were called thePhoenixborn - humans capable of wieldingmagics not previously thought possible, and together they initiated the GreatCleansing, and eradicated the chimeramenace. The great cities finally reopened, trade flourished, and the Phoenixbornushered humanity into a new golden age.But the mysterious source which thePhoenixborn drew upon was not donewith them. Each of these wizard-warriorshad been gifted with but a fraction ofthe true power that blessed them, andthat power now desired unification.Slowly but steadily, the Phoenixborn wereplagued with a desire to slaughter theirown kind, and absorb the abilities of theirincinerated kin. Now is the time of theCollection of Ashes, when Phoenixbornmust battle Phoenixborn until only oneremains to inherit a newborn world.Object of the GameIn Ashes, you are a Phoenixborn—a powerful magicwielder battling other Phoenixborn in a duel of wits andmagical prowess. Attack a UnitAttack a target unit with 1 or more of your units. Whenyou attack a unit, resolve the following steps in order(see ‘Example: Attacking a Unit’ on page 8):1. Declare Attackers: Declare which of your units areattacking by pushing them forward on the battlefield.2. Choose Target: Choose a single unit to target on anopponent’s battlefield. All of your attacking units willattack the targeted unit.3. Declare a Guard: The defending player may chooseto have her Phoenixborn guard the unit beingtargeted by moving her Phoenixborn in front of thatunit. The Phoenixborn is now the target of the attack.Note: A Phoenixborn can guard even if it is exhausted. An unexhausted unit the defending player controlswith the ‘Unit Guard’ ability can be declared as aguard in the same way. Only a single unit can bedeclared as a guard for any given attack.4. Resolve Damage: If the final target of the attackis a Phoenixborn, total each attacking unit’s attackvalues and inflict that amount of damage to the targetPhoenixborn. Then place 1 exhaustion token on eachattacking unit. If the final target of the attack is a unitand that unit is unexhausted the defending playermay now choose to counter with that unit.A. If the target unit does not counter or cannot counterbecause it is exhausted, total each of the attackingunit’s attack values and inflict that amount ofdamage on the target unit. Then place 1 exhaustiontoken on each attacking unit. The target unit doesnot get an exhaustion token if it did not counter.B. If the target unit counters, the attacking player’sunits and the defending player’s unit are nowconsidered to be in battle. Total each of theattacking unit’s attack values and inflict thatamount of damage on the defending player’s unit.Simultaneously the defending player’s counteringunit will deal an amount of damage equal to itsattack value to the attacking units. If the defendingplayer is countering multiple units, the defendingplayer may choose how to split up her unit’sdamage among the attacking units. Then place1 exhaustion token on each unit involved in thatbattle that was not destroyed.PassIf you cannot take any other main action, you mustchoose to pass as your main action. You may also chooseto pass even if there are other main actions you couldperform. When you pass, your main action is to donothing. If all players pass on consecutive turns, theplayer turns phase ends and players move on to therecovery phase of the round.Note: If a player passes and 1 or more of her opponents donot, the player turns phase continues and the player whopassed may pass again or take any other main action (ifable) on her next turn.Pay aCostSide ActionsIf the symbol appears on a play cost or activationcost, part of the cost to play or activate that card is thatit takes up your side action for the turn (see page 10 fordetails on playing cards and paying costs).MeditateWhen you meditate, discard any number of the following:cards in your handcards from the top of your deckready spells from your spellboard. For each card discarded, change a die in your active diepool to a side of your choice.Activate Dice Power AbilityYou may exhaust a die in your active pool that is powerside up to carry out its power effect. The effect for eachtype of power symbol in this set is detailed on the dicepower reference card belonging to that die.9

To attachan alteration spell to a unit, place that alteration spellunderneath the chosen unit card. Doug chooses toattach Root Armor to his Hammer Knight. As long asRoot Armor remains attached to that Hammer Knight, that Hammer Knight’s life value is increased by 2 (4).Ready SpellSummon Silver Snake isa ready spell (1). Most ready spells do not have an immediateeffect when they are put into play. Rather, once they areplayed, they remain in play and can be activated later. After his opponent is done taking a turn, on his nextturn Doug chooses to activate Summon Silver Snakeby paying its activation cost (4) (using up his main action, placing an exhaustion token on Summon Silver Snake andexhausting a die showing the symbol and a die showingthe symbol).Next, Doug carries out the activation effect (5) on thecard by removing a Silver Snake from his conjurationpile and placing it on his battlefield.Focusing a Ready SpellWhen a player puts a ready spell into play on aspellboard, if there are already 1 or more copies of thatready spell on that spellboard, then the spell becomesfocused. The new copy of the spell is placed belowthe current copy. The new copy does not take up anadditional spellboard slot (see page 12 for ‘Battlefields andSpellboards’). Many ready spells are exhausted as partof their cost to activate, meaning they can no longer beactivated during that round, so having multiple copiesof a spell in play allows a player to activate that spellmore than once per round (exhausting a new copy of thatready spell each time). Some ready spells have effects that say Focus 1 or Focus2. A spell’s Focus 1 effect becomes active when the spellhas been focused once (meaning you have 2 copies of thatspell on your spellboard). A spell’s Focus 2 effect becomesactive when the spell has been focused twice (meaningyou have 3 copies of that spell on your spellboard). See‘Example: Focused Cards’ below.Example: Focused CardsPlayer 1 has 2 copiesof the ready spell,“Summon Silver Snake”on her spellboard. Therefore, the Focus1 effect on both ofthose cards becomesactive. Damage and Wound TokensWhen a Phoenixborn or unit receivesdamage, place a number of wound tokens onthat Phoenixborn or unit equal to the amountof damage it received. When a Phoenixbornor unit has a number of wound tokens equalto or greater than its life value that unit orPhoenixborn is immediately destroyed. Whena unit is destroyed it is discarded. When a Phoenixbornis destroyed, its controlling player loses the game.Wound tokens do not decrease a Phoenixborn orunit’s life. Life is constant unless changed by an ability, die power or card effect. When a Phoenixborn or unitreceives damage, it will have wound tokens placed on it.However, some spells can place wound tokens directlyon a unit without first inflicting damage on that unit. Soa spell that blocks damage could not prevent a spell thatdirectly places wound tokens on a unit.Exhaustion TokensSome game effects add exhaustion tokensto cards in play. When an exhaustion tokenis added to a card that card is consideredto be exhausted.A unit that is exhausted hasBUTTERFLY MONKConjurationBattlefieldno ability text and cannotattack, block or counter. APhoenixborn that is exhaustedhas no ability text. A spell thatis exhausted has no effect text.Note: Some cards haveinexhaustible effects or abilities,as seen on the Butterfly Monkconjuration unit. These effects orabilities remain even if the cardhas been exhausted.Status TokensStatus tokens only come into play when acard brings them into play. That card willdetail how status tokens are used in thatinstance.5Unit Guard: This unit may guarda unit that is being attacked.Last Blessing 1: When this unit isdestroyed, remove 1 wound token froma target unit or Phoenixborn.X = the number of Summon ButterflyMonk spells on your spellboard.Attack 1 Life XRecover 1Inexhaustible ability12Battlefields and SpellboardsYou have a battlefieldand a spellboard as partof your play area. Playingcards or activating cardeffects or abilities maycause cards to be placedon your battlefield orspellboard. As longas a card is on yourbattlefield or spellboard,it is considered underyour control. Thereare a limited number ofslots on your battlefieldand spellboard, limitingthe number of cardsthat can be played there. The number of slots onyour battlefield and spellboard is determined by thespellboard and battlefield values on your Phoenixborn.Discarding CardsWhen a card that is in play is discarded or otherwiseremoved from play, remove all tokens that are on thatcard, placing those tokens back in their respectivepiles. Discard any cards that were attached to thatcard. When a card is discarded, place it in its owner’sdiscard pile.Exception: When conjuration cards are discarded, they arenot placed in a discard pile but instead returned to theirowner’s conjuration pile. The owner of a card is the playerwho started the game with that card in their deck, notnecessarily the player that currently controls that card. Some cards can beresparked. During theplayer turns phase, when a card that canbe resparked would bediscarded from play, its owner may pay thatcard’s respark cost toadd that card to hishand instead of to thediscard pile.Note: Cards that have beendiscarded by meditatingcannot be resparked.ResparkARADEL SUMMERGAARDPhoenixborn of Evermist ValleyBattlefield 8 Spellboard 4Water Blast: 1 :Deal 2 damage to a target unit.“Be gone, interloper! Phoenixborn vs. UnitA Phoenixborn is not a unit. Example: The Anchornaut’sability – Throw Anchor – reads, ‘Deal 1 damage to atarget unit.’ A Phoenixborn could not be targeted bythis ability, as a Phoenixborn is not a unit.Card Effects and TimingWhen a card effect contradicts the rulebook, thecard effect takes precedence. If any game effectswould ever seem to trigger simultaneously, the playerwhose turn it is decides in which order they willresolve. If it isn’t any player’s turn, the player with thefirst player token decides.Winning and Losing the GameIf a player’s Phoenixborn has a number of wounds onit equal to or greater than its life, that Phoenixborn isdestroyed. When a player’s Phoenixborn is destroyedhe is out of the game. When there is only 1 playerremaining, that player wins.CreditsGame Designer: Isaac VegaProducer: Colby DauchIllustrator: Fernanda SuarezWriter: Mr. BistroGraphic Designer: David RichardsEditors: David Moody, Nate RethornLead Playtester: Robert KlotzPlaytesters: Julius Besser, Sarah Besser, Yitzchak Besser,Joshua “Zetara” Nolte, Kevin Kortekaas, Leon William Durivage IV,Nils Monserud, Mitsuyo Kurosawa, Matias Korman,André Van Renssen, Marcel Roeloffzen, Jeffrey Smith,Nickolette Smith, Cammy Smith, Jonathan Liu, Brian Bartlett,Devon Bingham-Meek, Nick Williamson, Tomas Bailey,Kim Boone, Patrick Lavoie, Brent Ellison, Ellen Garrett,Joe Bailey, John J. Instead of playing with a pre-built deck or bringinga custom built deck to a game of Ashes, you andyour friends may draft your decks. 2 - 4 playerscan participate in a draft using this master set. Byadding additional Ashes sets more players can joinin on a draft. To participate in a draft, do the following stepsin order:ARADEL SUMMERGAARDPhoenixborn of Evermist ValleyBattlefield 8 Spellboard 4Water Blast: 1 :Deal 2 damage to a target unit.“Be gone, interloper! Gather each Phoenixborn in your collection andplace each into a separate pile with 3 copies ofeach of their corresponding Phoenixborn uniquecards under them.2. Gather all of the conjuration cards in yourcollection and put them to the side for later use.3. Gather 1 copy of each remaining card in yourcollection and shuffle them into one big draftdeck.4. Gather 10 copies of each dice type in yourcollection and place them in separate piles. If drafting with 5 or more players you will eitherneed to have a number of dice types in yourcollection equal to the number of playersdrafting, or you will need to have more than10 copies of each dice type so that there areenough dice available so that each playerdrafting can draft a full 10 dice.5. Randomly determine a first player and give themthe first player token.24DraftingDraft1. Starting with the first player and continuingclockwise around the table, each player chooses1 Phoenixborn along with their correspondingPhoenixborn unique cards. Then the first playerpasses the first player token to his left.2. Deal each player 9 cards from the draft deck. Each player will choose 1 of the cards they weredealt and pass the other 8 cards to the player ontheir left. Each player will choose 1 of the cardsthey were passed and pass the remaining 7 cardsto the player on their left. Players will continuechoosing and passing in this way until each playerhas chosen 9 cards.3. Starting with the first player and continuingclockwise around the table, each player chooses2 dice at a time, of any type, until all players havechosen 10 dice. Then the first player passes thefirst player token to his left.4. Reveal a number of cards from the draft deckequal to the number of players drafting andplace them face-up. Starting with the firstplayer, each player may take 1 of the face-upcards, putting 1 of their cards face-up in its place(making it available to be chosen by 1 of the otherdrafting players).5. Each player collects 2 additional copies of eachof the 9 cards they drafted.6. Players should now have 1 Phoenixborn, 10 diceand 30 cards – a complete Ashes deck.7. Some effects or abilities on cards are capableof bringing a conjuration unit into the game. Each conjuration unit has a conjuration limitvalue. If you have one or more effects orabilities in your deck that can bring out aconjuration unit, you must collect a numberof copies of that conjuration unit equal to thatconjuration unit’s conjuration limit. Do this foreach different conjuration your deck is capableof producing, by forming a conjuration pile outof these conjurations and keeping it separatefrom your deck.8. Players can now use their drafted deck in a gameor tournament.16
