Though cumbersometo transport, thatMYRNAWAGNERlily pad has been a worthy investment. We’ve witnessed all sorts of floaties andinflatables at boats around us, some thatlook to have cost hundreds of dollars andothers that maybe cost $3 and probablywon’t last more than a weekend. Othersappear to have been pulled from the recessesof a boat storage compartment. Wehave one such item — a mesh and elasticstrap creation that becomes a floating seatwhen you insert a noodle. Sounds odd, Iknow, but it works. And there’s always theinverted life jacket — not figure flattering, but functional. Our daughter learned a fish lesson onSunday afternoon — that fins are better forswimming than are feet. She found a pair ofswim fins in our boat and, along with a pairof goggles, decided to give them a try.She was amazed at the ease with whichshe could swim. DISCOVER! | AUGUST 1, 2015Community | 9KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITERThe Gray Havens to take the stageHusband and wife duo to play second weekend of conferenceThe Gray Havens are a husband and wifeduo whose music is a little different—ina good way.“We were looking for something a little different— something that we thought would appealto a wide variety of ages,” said Jody Van Kley, the Okoboji Bible Conference coordinator. “Weheard about The Gray Havens and I found outthey were doing a concert in Chicago and I madethe effort to go out and hear them. They werereally, really good. They were super entertaining,very-heartwarming and easy to like.”They Gray Havens fit the niche the OkobojiBible Conference was looking to fill and theywill be performing on both Friday and Saturdaynights, Aug. 7 and 8.The Gray Havens are Dave and Licia Radford, who perform what they call “narrative-popfolk-esquemusic.”Along with their original sound are theiroriginal songs. The Gray Havens recently came out with theirfirst full-length album, “Fire And Stone.” Withtheir lyrics, they build a narrative.“It’s fictional world-building we’re trying todo in our songs,” Dave says, “not just recountingevents. The music reflects that. A lot of thesesongs don’t fit neatly into a formulaic writingapproach. There are meter changes, key changes, compound measures — basically morepaints on the palette to work with in conveyingthe story, idea, or emotion. I get bored easily,so I find myself intentionally writing songs thatwill keep me on my toes.”“Their lyrics are very in-depth. You need to sitback and really think about what they’re saying,”Van Kley said. “There is a lot of meaningto what they are saying in their songs.”The theological undercurrent that is presentin the duo’s songs are often told in a sort ofstory form.“For writers Dave and Licia, the lines betweenfantasy, lyric poetry and song lyric are very thinindeed,” says their bio.“C.S. Lewis noted that stories have the powerto steal past the watchful dragons of the humanheart,” Dave says. “Some of the most worshipful,joy-filled times in my life have been experiencedwhen I was reading ‘The Chronicles ofNarnia.’ In our own small way with these songs,we want to build those kinds of worlds for ourlisteners to inhabit.”“Something I loved about Dave’s writingeven before I really knew him is the way thesongs invite you in,” Licia said. “They unfoldas you go. They require interaction. Before wewere married, before we were even friends, Iwould sometimes listen to one of his songs fora couple of months before the real depth of itwould suddenly click.”The Gray Havens’ story, music and soundmake them a perfect fit to help bring the conferenceto a close.“We think that they will fit well with our conferencefamily,” Van Kley said. In BojiBantam’s production of “Rapunzel,”four Stephens College students willportray four different Italian actors, who in turn are putting on a showingof “Rapunzel.”“This is a special show based incomedic theatre with our four actorsall playing multiple parts,” directorJess Jung said. “We have fun and sillyprops, quick costume changes, puppetsand a lot of general goofiness andbuffoonery.”While presented in a unique way,the general story remains the same.Rapunzel is stuck in her tower underthe guard of a deceptive witch. Aprince and his horse are on an adventureto rescue her and encountermany obstacles along the way.The audience won’t get away withsitting on their hands during the showeither. In fact, they will have their ownpart to play as they have assignmentsto call out words or make sounds atcertain points throughout the show.“The actors move around a lot andhave a lot of interaction with theaudience making sure they remainengaged and captivated by the performance,”Jung said. The actors themselves said the interactionwith the audience is bothfun and rewarding, as well an instantbarometer for how the show is going.“With the children in the audienceyou get an instant gratificationor reaction and can tell right away ifsomething works or not,” said MaggieNiven, who plays Rosetta, as well asthe witch in “Rapunzel.” “It’s reallyphysical with lots of action and wehave fun being creative and comingup with stuff for all our characters. For Kate Thurn, who plays Arlequinand dons a horse hat to play theprince’s trusty steed, performing inchildren’s theatre is a unique challengeand lots of fun.“You really have to exaggerate yourmovements and expression and besilly,” Thurn said. “You get to expressyourself in a bigger way than in othersettings.”Parents shouldn’t hesitate to tagalong and enjoy the show as well.Jung says that of all Boji Bantam playsthis summer it may be the best mergerbetween kid and adult audiences.“It’s classic and it’s fun,” Jung said.“It’s a great way to wrap up the seasonand we want the audience to have asmuch fun as we do.”So grab the family and head to BojiBantam and call out to Rapunzel to letdown her golden hair. Whatdid these groups and the hundreds of others likethem long for more than anything else? To maketheir way onto the Ed Sullivan Show and gainnational fame and immortality, of course. The Taffetas are a group of sisters from Muncie,IN, where their most notable performancehas been on the Moose Hall stage. They areperforming on “Spotlight On Music,” a fictitiousweekly television program in New YorkCity. They are a-hoping and a-praying that EdSullivan is watching. Then its announced that heis indeed watching, so now the pressure is reallyon. The quartet of sisters are Kaye, Peggy, Cheryland Donna. We learn about the sisters in this kind of goldenoldies musical revue where the songs jumpout of the jukebox and right onto the OkobojiSummer Theatre stage. The stage is set as a sound stage complete witha camera, an applause sign, and a three-pieceband dressed in white tuxes. When the four sisters actually start singingtheir tight harmonies astound. My hat’s offto Molly Denninghoff, Allie Mgrublian, EmilyChatterson and Shannon Cox. These fourwomen sing together like they are sisters whohave been singing together their whole lives. In addition to the harmonies the girls’ choreographytakes it to another level. Even thoughthey are simple moves, the four actors playingthe four sisters are so in sync with their movesthat it doesn’t seem like choreography. It seems as natural to them as breathing. All of the songs were blasts from the pasts andmany of the tunes got my toes tapping. Therewere a few numbers that they unearthed from atreasure trove of buried, long-forgotten songs.Others were instantly recognizable and hadthe people around me in the audience smiling. In particular, the medley of songs they did aboutevery girls favorite topic, boys, was a hit. Some of the songs included in the medleywere “Johnny Angel,” “Where the Boys Are,”“Mr. Lee,” “Dedicated to the One I Love.”It inspired husbands to put their arms aroundtheir wives, smiles to spread across faces, andwomen to silently sing along. The end of themedley was met with whistles, hoots and exuberantapplause.Gee whiz and golly gee it was a fun musicalrevue. FOkoboji | Iowa

It definitely looks more likean SUV than a Crossover. Most Crossovershave a more slanted hood with asmaller grill, but the 2013 GMC TerrainSLE retains the bold, truck-like lookwith a straight hood and a larger grill. But while it may look more like astereotypical SUV, this vehicle doeshave all of the benefits of being aCrossover. One of the biggest ones isthe gas mileage. For a person who logsa lot of miles behind the wheel howmuch gas the vehicle guzzles is prettyimportant for thepocket book. The 2013 GMCTerrain SLE gets 32miles per gallon onthe highway.
