“The best education for my child.” What parent does not want that? The Netherlands can stillhold its own in the international top-10 rankings for education. It is partly a feat of our educationthat Dutch children are the happiest in the world. This by no means implies that we can sitback and do nothing, for however good the educational methods, school building, or principalmay be, the quality of education can never surpass the quality of the teacher. The teachers arethe ones who are responsible for their students’ proper education, who discover their students’talents and then make them flourish. Well-trained teachers who continue to learn after theirgraduation are the key to their students’ success. This sets high expectations for teacher trainingcourses. The School of Education is well aware of this social assignment and does its utmost tomaintain the highest level of quality for its courses. We offer a clever programme that ensuresthat our students’ professional knowledge, practical experiences, and personal developmentreceive equal focus. We have, furthermore, integrated Rotterdam’s metropolitan challenges sothat our students are well-equipped to pursue their career at any school.

School of Education (Teacher Training)The School of Education of the Rotterdam University ofApplied Sciences provides bachelor’s degree courses in Primaryas well as Secondary, Vocational, and Adult Education.We train our students for teaching in primary education, thejunior years of higher general and pre-university secondaryeducation, and the entire curriculums of pre-vocational andvocational secondary education. The design of the variousteacher training courses is quite similar but, naturally, theydiffer in knowledge areas, training schools (internships),instructional methods, and educational theories. After all,there is a difference between teaching toddlers and teachingadolescents; they require different qualities. We do,however, collaborate andexchange knowledge and experiences whenever possible.All the students who complete one of the 4-year courses areawarded a bachelor’s degree and are thereby qualified asteachers. All the teacher training courses are provided bothfull time and part time. We also work closely together withour own university’s Research Centre for Urban Talent, theFaculty of Education of Erasmus University Rotterdam, andthe College for Special Needs Education of the HU Universityof Applied Sciences Utrecht. We thereby safeguard theexchange between theory, practice, and practice-focusedresearch in all of our courses.“As a teacher, you can make the difference”Primary EducationAcademic Teacher TrainingIt is primary school that literally lays the foundations forthe further school career. The pressure to have children inprimary school achieve the very best results is extremelyhigh. The Department of Primary Education regards it as agreat challenge to equip its students for that task. A goodknowledge of the Dutch language, arithmetic/mathematics,nature and technology, geography, and history are paramount.A student graduating with a bachelor’s degree inPrimary Education is qualified to teach any year in any primaryschool in the Netherlands. Students may distinguishthemselves through a minor course like Inclusive Education,The Language Specialist, Arithmetic and Mathematics,Physical Education, Pre- and Early School Education, UrbanTalent, or Early English. They can also opt for the YoungChild or Older Child graduation programme. They can,moreover, take the opportunity to obtain the MontessoriSystem Diploma as part of their course, or they can followthe ‘Yellow Brick Road’ that we have developed recently.This is a specialisation for future primary education teacherswith an international outlook. Through this programme,they can pursue a career in a primary school that providesbilingual, early or foreign language education, or internationalschools.In order to ride the national (and international) trend tohave more academically trained teachers in the classroom,we started the Academic Teacher Training Course for PrimaryEducation in 2011. The academic teacher training courseis targeted at pre-university secondary education graduates.The course is jointly provided by the Department ofEducation of Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Departmentof Primary Education of the Rotterdam University ofApplied Sciences. It is a course for students who would notonly like to teach, but also who want to have an academiceducation. After 4 years, they obtain a bachelor’s degree, apre-master’s degree diploma, and an honours degree. Theycan then complete the master’s degree course in Pedagogy& Education at Erasmus University Rotterdam in one year.

Secondary, Vocational and Adult EducationTraining in SchoolHigh-quality teaching in secondary (vocational) educationsets high demands on the teacher. Apart from a goodknowledge of their subject and the associated teachingmethods, it requires good educational skills. The currentstudent, especially in a major city like Rotterdam, calls for anincreasingly more personal approach. The bachelor’s degreecourses in Secondary/Vocational and Adult Education arefully designed to meet these requirements. Based on themaxim that “every teacher is a language teacher”, all thestudents enrolled in one of these courses is examined asto their level of language proficiency. Those who need itare offered the possibility of tailor-made language supportthroughout their studies via the university’s LanguageCentre.“Mastership and Craftsmanship”There are various ways to become a teacher. One is theroute where a great part of the course takes place in theactual educational setting: Training in School (TiS), alsoreferred to as “work-based learning”. The (teaching) practicein an affiliated training school plays an even more importantrole here than in the regular full-time programme. Theinternships in the TiS programme are more intensive interms of both their duration and the requirements set. Thelearning programme is a close cooperation between ourSchool of Education and six certified training schools: RotterdamTraining School, Voorne Putten Rozenburg schools,Training School for Western Brabant, Training School forDordrecht and surroundings, Zadkine Spijkenisse TrainingSchool, Haaglanden Training School, Nieuwe WaterwegNoord, and Zeeland Training School. The programme aimsto allow students to become acquainted with the setting oftheir future profession and to safeguard the continuity ofeducation. A particular feature of the programme is that TiSstudents are working in the professional practice twice aslong, especially in their first two years.

International collaborationTraining in, and for, the international and multicultural(port) city of Rotterdam requires our future teachers toacquire specific competences. That is why we attach greatvalue to our students and teaching staff gaining internationalexperience and knowledge. In order to put this valueinto practice, we have built an international network ofteacher training providers abroad, so that we all are able toexchange students and staff. Our school is, for instance, amember of the European Teacher Education Network andthe Kastalia Network. We have, furthermore, signed collaborationagreements with a number of sister organisationswithin and outside Europe, such as the Linköping Universityin Sweden, the Pedagogische Hochschule in Zürich, ArtesisPlantijn Hogeschool in Antwerp, the University of Indianain Pennsylvania, and the Institito Pedagogico Arubano atAruba. We also jointly organise international comparisonsof relevant subjects, such as examination programmes. Forstudents from abroad, we organise an annual InternationalClass in order to share, at the student level, all the knowledgeof special education in an international context.Master’s degree course in Learning andInnovationThe School of Education offers working teachers who wishto acquire wider or more in-depth knowledge of educationa master’s degree course in Learning and Innovation. This2-year part-time course has seen a considerable number ofinnovative education professionals graduate over the pastfew years.Collaborating with the School of EducationA close working relationship with schools and educationalpartners is essential to our institute. After all, learning inpractice comprises a major part of any of our courses. Wehave signed long-term collaboration agreements withvarious school boards. The Department of SecondaryEducation/Adult and Vocational Education cooperates withschools in the regions of Rotterdam and the Hague as wellas in Zeeland and Western Brabant. These contracts includeclear agreements about the deployment of students, ourjoint training, the qualities of the training schools, andknowledge exchange. Institutions of an educational naturemay approach us whenever they need the active participationof students in research, or curriculum developmentor implementation. Our students are closely involved in anumber of urban projects, such as:S.V. GIOThis is a programme that allows children in the last twoyears of primary schools in Rotterdam to work at theirpersonal development like a top athlete. During a 20-weekafter-school sports and learning programme, childrenplay sports and deal with whatever they find difficult inschool. At S.V. GIO, they are given a good shot, so thatthey begin their secondary education with the proper kit.Self-confidence and self-awareness are essential here. Thatis why all the children at S.V. GIO are allocated their owncoach – including students in the 2nd year of the bachelor’sdegree course in Primary Education. Maritime MuseumProject. By the assignment of the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam,students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree course inPrimary Education organise a programme for large groupsof 4-12-year olds. The result is a smashing five-day educationalprogramme filled with educational activities that thechildren will never forget.Students in the bachelor’s degree courses in SecondaryEducation/Vocational and Adult Education can be askedfor homework support for secondary school students orto get involved in youth work activities. Naturally, it will bedetermined in mutual consultation whether, and how, ourstudents can meet such a request.

Research Centre for Urban TalentCentre of Expertise for Social InnovationNot only discovering but also developing students’ talentsis currently the biggest issue in the national and internationaleducational field. The insight that ‘educating’ is mainlyabout ‘the student’s learning’ implies that we should acquiremore knowledge as to the potential of people and the waythey learn – and, therefore, which strategies you can applyand which circumstances you should take into account asa teacher. The Research Centre for Urban Talent of the RotterdamUniversity of Applied Sciences has been establishedespecially for this purpose. The research centre comprisesa group of applied research professors and senior teacherswho devote their time and attention to feeding the coursesof the Schools of Education and Social Work with relevantknowledge that can, moreover, be quickly applied in practice.Four research programmes have been defined:Parental involvement in educationCommunity SchoolHigh-Risk YouthContinuous Language Learning ProgrammeThe Research Centre for Urban Talent also provides themaster’s degree course in Urban Education.We collaborate with our university’s Centre of Expertise forSocial Innovation. This organisation concentrates on relevantsocial developments in Rotterdam. In the next few years, thefocus will be on the national programme for the Rotterdam-Zuid District, of which the long-term Children’s Zone projectinstigated by the Rotterdam Council is of great importance tous. Within this project, we can see opportunities to learn fromschools in areas where social problems are mounting up.Assessment CentreWe also have our very own Assessment Centre that can arrangefor various educational assessments:• Intake assessments for lateral entry andun(der)qualified teachers• Integral HRM policy assessment• Assessments for new students• Assessments for establishing the higher educationlevel of educational staff• Teaching trainee and starter qualificationassessments for students• Assessor training courses (starter course andcertification course)
