Rounds with the Investigators: Clinical Research Leaders Consult onChallenging Cases of Early Breast CancerA Continuing Medical Education ProgramOVERVIE W O F AC TIVIT YHistorically, surgery has been the primary method for treating early breast cancer. More recently, thediagnostic, surgical and medical management of breast cancer has escalated in complexity becauseof advancements in technology and clinical experience in addition to the availability of novel pharmaceuticalagents. Thus, the care of breast cancer has evolved toward a multifaceted approach necessitatinginput from a variety of interdisciplinary experts. This paradigm shift has created the opportunityfor extensive knowledge exchange among oncologic subspecialties and the challenge of ensuring thatmajor clinical advances influencing local and systemic treatment algorithms are effectively disseminatedamong the cross-functional team members. To bridge the gap between research and patient care, thisCME activity features a panel discussion with leading breast cancer investigators. By providing accessto the latest research developments and expert perspectives, this program assists breast surgeons inthe formulation of up-to-date clinical management strategies.LE A RNIN G O B JEC TIVES• Apply the results of emerging research in breast cancer clinical management to treatment andreferral strategies for patients with early-stage disease.• Recognize the variability in routine ER, PR and HER2 testing, and implement appropriate guidelinesto maximize accurate pathologic assessment.• Develop a treatment plan for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, considering tumor size andnodal status.• Effectively utilize biomarkers and genomic risk classifiers to estimate patient prognosis and select orrecommend adjuvant therapy.• Counsel patients about the value of sentinel lymph node biopsy and its influence on further local andsystemic treatment.• Recall the design and eligibility criteria for ongoing breast cancer clinical trials, and enroll or referappropriate patients for study participation.AC CREDITATION STATEMENTResearch To Practice is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education toprovide continuing medical education for physicians.CREDIT D E SIGNATION STATEMENTResearch To Practice designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1Credits.
