This year is certainlyno exception. We have adjusted to the new schedule andour new classroom and have hit the ground running!Our focus in math has been place value andcomparing and ordering numbers to the thousands place.We are also continuing to review the basic addition facts.The main theme of our reading selections hasbeen centered around character traits and characterdevelopment. The comprehension strategies that we havebeen studying are summarizing and making inferences.Our first experiment in science is underway. We areinvestigating light and plant growth by planting seeds in twocontainers and placing one in sunlight and the other in thedark. We will record our observations over the next 10 days.This is a great group of kids and I look forward to theyear ahead!1st Grade Newsby Mrs. GonzalezThe 1st Grade students at Leakey ISDare off to another great school year. To date, wehave <strong>19</strong> students who are very eager to learn. Thestudents are already blending words, spelling,writing and reading! We just finished readingaloud a chapter book written by Barbara Park:Junie B. Jones, 1st Grader (at last)!This book is part of a wonderful seriesthat deals with real-life situations, problems,dilemmas and solutions. The main character,Junie B., helps students bring fun and learninginto the classroom. We have had a great threeweeks getting to know one another, workinghard, and adjusting to the expectations for 1stGrade. I am very pleased to be their teacher andlook forward to a wonderful year!A 4th Grade reaction to Art! by Mrs. DabbsThursdays might get messy this yearin the 4th grade! As a part of theweekly curriculum we have includedArt. We will be learning about thefundamentals of art as well as theworks of some very famous artists.Students will not only be creatingtheir own masterpieces inspired bythe chosen artist of the week, butwill have the opportunity to react andreflect upon various works in theirwriting journals.So far we have looked at works fromFrida Kahlo, Marc Chagall, andSalvador Dali. I am thrilled with howmuch detail and effort each studenthas put into their works so far.The only complaint received wasdisappointment that they could nothave Art all day! I look forward tothe many masterpieces these youngArtists will create this year! Last year’s academics brought challengesfrom the outside world into the classroom. We were able to visitlocal businesses, study ratios around the school and participate inactive hands on learning. Here at Leakey ISD we will provide asound, creative and innovative education that will give the studentsevery opportunity to reach their educational goals. Band practices began in August and are continuing during the band period and on Monday evenings.The theme for the competition show this year is “Music of the 70’s”. After a closeloss of two matches againstUtopia last week, theseyoung ladies were readyto play. We have a totalof 13 players this seasonincluding: 4 sixth graders,6 seventh graders, and only3 eighth graders. We wereable to come up with a winagainst Center Point in bothmatches with some aceserves from eighth graderSofia Rodriquez who added12 total of those points.Satera Perez, Heidi Pugat, Sydney Carter,and Sydney Jones added in points to assistin shutting out Center Point. Our bench wasable to come in and add some great helpto stay in the lead. I am very impressedwith this young team and their hard workand efforts . Our serves, passes, hits, andcommunication seem to be improving eachpractice and game. I am looking forward toa great season with these young ladies.
