This is important to New Horizons, because some of our funding is withheld until a budgetis passed. Fortunately, our financial reserves allow us tocontinue to fully provide services to our clients. In spite of the challenges, New Horizons is dedicated to itsmission of empowering and improving the lives of adultswith developmental disabilities. We are doubling our effortsto expand resources to assure a brighter future forover 800 individuals who look to New Horizons for jobtraining and placement, homes, dignity and independence. We know that as a non-profit agency we must continueto decrease our reliance on government funding and increase support from familymembers and community friends who believe in the work of New Horizons, and wehave done so. At the same time, I want to assure you that we are blessed to have city, state, county and federal elected officials who are very supportive of New Horizons, inmany ways, including financially. We are thrilled to have recently received a grant fromL.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky for expansion of our programs and facilities. As the Thanksgiving season nears, I want to thank all of you who have joined withus to make sure New Horizons is able to provide a lifeline of services to so many.We have recently received a generous grant from the Weingart Foundation to supportour agency. Individual donors, foundations, Rotary Clubs, our Champions forIndependence, Kiwanis Clubs, Women’s Clubs, civic organizations, corporations, gala guests, walkers, golfers, volunteers, student interns…it is impossible to name themany groups and individuals who are part of New Horizons’ family of support…butwe are thankful for each of you who donate funds and your time.We have had three of our longtime Board Members complete their terms of office inJune: Larry Daniels, Paul Elkins and Robert Jahangiri. We appreciate all they havedone and continue to do for New Horizons. We welcome Lisa Hughes, Sondi Scheckand Patricia Schultz-Mascolo to the Board of Directors. These three ladies are alreadyhard at work.It has been said it takes a village to raise a child. At New Horizons we know it takes acommunity of caring and dedicated individuals to make sure that those with intellectualdisabilities have the support they need to learn, grow, work and participate…and thengive back to our community. I thank you for your continued involvement and supportof New Horizons, and for making a difference in the lives of New Horizons’ clients.Sincerely,Stanley BryantChairman, Board of Directors
3Volunteers—Above andBeyond the Call of DutySince the founding of New Horizons in 1954, volunteers have served as an integralpart of the organization. They have been deeply valued for their involvement and supportof the clients, commitment to the programs, and dedication to the agency itself.A volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty is Shelly Feldman. Shellybegan volunteering for New Horizons in 2005 and plans on never stopping. Firstassisting teacher, Ray, in classroom #4, Shelly would visit the New Horizons campustwice a week and teach reading, writing, and math skills to our clients. Upon Ray’sdeparture, Shelly decided to teach individual clients. She now comes in once a weekand has between 4-6 clients whom she individually spends 30-40 minutes with.Shelly continues her volunteer work at New Horizons primarily because of what shegets back from the clients. “When I think of New Horizons it literally takes my breathaway. In life we take many things for granted. When I volunteer at New Horizons Isee something amazing and indescribable. I now feel foolish when I look at a smallthing and make a big deal out of it. As much as you thank me for being a volunteer,I thank New Horizons more for what you have taught me.”New Horizons is incredibly grateful for the immense impact Shelly has made on notonly our clients but on the entire staff. We invite you to join us, like Shelly did fiveyears ago when her life changed in a way she never imagined possible. Your world asyou know it can change too.
