The History of Headington Hill HallHeadington Hill Hall is a 19th century period house set in 14 acres of landscapedgrounds with picturesque views over Oxford City. The house, famous for itsformer tenant Robert Maxwell, was originally grazing land that was purchasedby James Morrell Senior from the Savage family in 1817. It would be JamesMorrell Junior who would enlist the architect John Thomas and builder JosephCastle to transform the hill top house his father built into the stunning 51 roomedmansion which exists today.James Morrell Junior enjoyed the house and its tranquil grounds for five yearsbefore his death in 1863, leaving the house to his wife Alicia and daughter Emily.Sadly Alicia passed away a year after James Junior, leaving Emily an orphan atthe age of 10. The Morrell trustees took control of the house and the property wasleased for 10 years to Richard Corbet. Emily returned to the house in 1874 withher new husband and third cousin, George Morrell. Emily lived in the house foranother 64 years until 1938 when the building was requisitioned by thegovernment as a military hospital.The house remained a Red Cross Rehabilitation Centre until 1953 when it wassold to Oxford City Council. By the time Robert Maxwell moved into the Hall in1959, it had become dilapidated. Some of his contributions to the fabric of thebuilding are visible today, such as the large stained-glass window on the stairs –commissioned to replace a Victorian window damaged in the war – and hisbathroom.In 1992 Oxford Brookes University agreed a lease for the property with theCouncil and Headington Hill Hall soon established itself as one of Oxford’spremiere wedding venues.
