PGCE INSECONDARYEDUCATIONPGCE/PGCertEdCOURSECONTENTThe course is divided intoeight modules that ensure thedevelopment of your knowledgeand skills across the year.The university-based parts ofthe course consist of two mainstrands: Professional Studiesand Subject Studies. These twoelements are closely interwovenand are integrated with theschool-based parts of theprogramme.PROFESSIONAL STUDIESThe Professional Studies strandintroduces you to the keycurrent issues for secondaryteachers. These include thenew secondary curriculum,14-19 education, personalisedlearning and individual needsSUBJECT STUDIESThe Subject Studies strandbuilds on the genericProfessional Studiesprogramme and concentrateson subject-specifi c issues andpedagogies. You will studyand apply the latest teachingmethods within your subject.SCHOOL EXPERIENCESchool Experience is a keyelement of your course. Youwill spend 24 weeks in carefullyselected partnership schools.You will be under the supervisionof a mentor and supported bya university tutor, enabling youto integrate the understandingdeveloped at university withschool-based learning.SUBJECTSOFFEREDArt and Design, English,Mathematics, ModernLanguages, Music, ReligiousEducation, ScienceTHE COURSEThis one year, full time courseis a highly practical initialteacher education programmewhich prepares you to teachpupils in the 11-18 agerange.The one-year courseequips you with effectiveapproaches to generalclassroom management andspecialist subject teaching,and an enhanced knowledgeof your chosen subject and itsplace in the school curriculum.You also gain a professionalunderstanding of broadereducational issues and currentpractice in secondary schools.You are expected to workat Level 7 (Masters level)and, upon successfulcompletion of the course,could achieve 60 creditstowards an MA in Education.TEACHING,LEARNING ANDASSESSMENTApproaches to learning includelectures, directed reading,workshops, seminars, andpractical and project workwith professional tutor support.Assessment is based oncoursework, assignmentsand the achievement of theStandards for the award ofQualifi ed Teacher Status (QTS).It was a lot of hardwork but completelyworth it after 9 months!The subject teachingwas really good and wehad a very supportiveenvironment.Frances MuntPGCE Secondary Music
