Information Pack 2016Mount KilimanjaroMachame Route5: TREK ITINERARYMACHAME HUTAfter an early breakfast, we will transfer by bus to theMachame Gate. Here we will sign in to the national parkand meet our expert team of guides and porters. The bigascent starts here!We will begin a steady trek through a humid rainforest thatteems with wildlife, such as monkeys and parrots, beforereaching Machame Hut campsite at 2,980 m. If the skiesare clear, we will be rewarded with our first view of thepeak! Then it’s time for a 3-course dinner before headingto our tents.SHIRA HUTWe will start with an early breakfast, before continuing ourascent to Shira Hut at 3,850 m. Lunch will be provided enroute. Throughout today we will catch tantalising glimpsesof Kilimanjaro’s peak through the trees, as we climb wideridges and mountain pathways. We will arrive at Shira Hutcampsite in the late afternoon. For the first time, we will beable to look down on clouds below us, while watching thesun set over distant Mount Meru. We’ll end the day with a3-course hot dinner.BARRANCO CAMPToday is an acclimatisation day. We will trek up to Lavatower, before descending to Barranco Camp. Trekkinghigh and sleeping low aids acclimatisation. After stoppingfor lunch at the ancient volcanic plug of Lava Tower, wewill descend, enjoying stunning views of the WesternBreach on the way down. Barranco Camp has somestunning views of the peak high above and Moshi town farbelow. Information Pack 2016Mount KilimanjaroMachame Route7: TREK ITINERARYBARAFU CAMPAfter breakfast, we will scale the Barranco Wall, animposing rock formation, and from the top of the wall, wewill cross the Karanga Valley. At these altitudes there isvery little vegetation or animal life, save for the occasionalcrow. We will reach Barafu Camp (4,673 m) in the lateafternoon - our last stop before the summit. We will campon a stony ridge, with views dominated by the summit ofMt Kilimanjaro and the spectacular open vista of the vastplains below. We will get some rest in the early evening.SUMMIT CLIMBThis is it! We will leave camp at around midnight and startour summit bid. We will take things slowly, as the route issteep. The reward for all this effort? At Stella Point you willwitness the most spectacular sunrise, as the glowing sunilluminates the southern slopes and plains far beyond. Aftera final push, we will reach the roof of Africa – the 5,895 mUhuru Peak. We will spend some time at the summit,reflecting on the climb and the achievement of reachingthese awe-inspiring heights. We will then descend toBarafu Camp to grab a few hours rest, before continuingour descent to Mweka Hut campsite, moving from thefrosty summit to the lush rainforests in a few hours.RETURN TO MOSHIWe will have a relaxed start to the day, with time to sharesongs and dancing with our guides and porters in theshadow of Uhuru Peak. The final day of walking iseasy-going, through scenic forest on establishedpathways. The sound of chattering monkeys and birds willaccompany you on the walk down to Mweka Gate. Hereyou will sign your name in the register, to be used for yoursummit certificate.
