HomeCosyBy KirstieTwosomeMcLeodKnit these cushions in super big yarn on super big needlesfor fast results and the ultimate in home comfort.Sirdar’s Bigga yarnis so cuddly youwon’t be able toput it down!Take a look at these luxurious cushions…don’t they just make you want tocuddle up on the sofa with them? Createdfrom Sirdar’s Bigga super chunky yarn whichis 50% wool, these have to be the mostsnuggly comfortable cushions we’ve everseen! And because the yarn is so big, they’lltake you no time at all to make.Bigga comes in a range of 16 colours, soyou’re bound to find one that suits yourdecor perfectly. But a word of warning: assoon as you’ve finished one, you’ll beinundated with requests from friends andfamily wanting their own cuddly cushiontoo! Especially now that we’re approachingthe autumn and winter months.A few carefully placed accessories, such asthese cushions, can transform the look ofyour room with the minimum of effort.Together with a nice chunkythrow and some softlighting, you will havecreated a haven ofwarmth andtranquillity. We love knittingwith Sirdar’s Bigga, but you’ll find that when it’s time to sew uppieces knitted in it, you’ll need a really bigknitters’ needle to thread the yarn through. Ifyou have trouble finding one of these, wesuggest that when you are making up thesecushions, you use a double knit yarn in amatching colour. You might also find it easierto sew with, and you’ll be able to sew smallerstitches for a neater and stronger finish, too.No zips neededIf you don’t like adding zips, which can be alittle tricky, this pattern is great because youform the openings by sewing the cushioncovers in such a way that it creates anenvelope for you to slip the cushion padinside. While the chequered rib effectcushion will have the opening at the back, the rib and stocking stitch version has theopening at the front. The short rib adds agreat detail to the cushion and while we’veleft ours plain, you could add three largebuttons for a great detail effect. You’d better get your needles ready, asorders for these cushions will be flooding infrom far and wide!46 September 2005

HomeHow to…Rib stitchThe simple way to create texture.1With your ball end yarn at the back ofyour work, start off with a standard knitstitch, and knit it in the normal way.2Next, purl a stitch, but before you doit you need to bring the ball end yarn to thefront of your work.Simple rib stitches look veryeffective when knitted upon super chunky yarn.3With the ball end yarn now at thefront, purl a stitch just as you would asnormal (if you need a little reminder of whatto do, turn to page 83).backstitch side seams with Bigga or matchingDK yarn. Now place markers 15in, 38cm from thecast off edge. Fold knitting with RS facing, pinedges together and backstitch side seams withBigga or matching DK yarn. Turn cushion coverout the right way around and you should havean ‘envelope’ ready for your cushion pad.Rib and stockingstitch cushionCast on 32 sts using 15mm needles.Row 1 K2, P2 to end.Row 2 P2, K2 to end.Rep these 2 rows until knitting meas 5in, 13cm.Next row K.Next row P.These two rows form st st. Continue in st st untilknitting meas 45in, 114.5cm.Cast off.Making upWeave in all loose ends and press according toball band instructions. With RS facing, place knitting on a flat surface.Place a marker on both edges of the knitting10in, 25.5cm from cast on edge either side, thenfold knitting over at this point and pin down andbackstitch side seams with Bigga or matchingDK yarn. Now place markers 15in, 38cm from thecast off edge. Fold knitting with RS facing, pinedges together and back stitch side seams withBigga or matching DK yarn. Turn cushion coverout the right way around and you should havean ‘envelope’ ready for your cushion pad.4Next, you need to knit a stitch, sotake the ball end yarn back through yourneedles and knit a stitch. Continue to knit 1,purl 1 (K1, P1) along to the end of the row.5This is the effect that is created whenyou knit 1, purl 1 across a row. Rib is a greatstitch that keeps its shape, yet remainsflexible. A useful rule of thumb to follow: ifyou have an even number of stitches, alwaysstart with a knit stitch.September 200549
