weekend workbox➤ through many projects. I alsomanaged to leave with a sneakyphotograph my then boyfriend Lee(now husband) took of me sitting athis piano – I was very scared thatalarms would go off!“I’ve included many typicalMackintosh design elements andshapes in this design, the rose andthe repeated squares. I love theelegance and simplicity, but I’vealso tried to inject a bit of funthrough the use of colour, makingthe design prettier and more girly, using shades of pink and lilac.”Stitching the designsThe dressing table mat is worked on14HPI aida band over one thread ofthe fabric and the box top andmirror are worked on 28HPIevenweave over two threads. Workall the cross stitch first using twostrands of cotton. There are quite afew fractional stitches in thesedesigns, so take care to follow thechart carefully. When you areworking the aida band you may findit easier to swap to a sharp needleto pierce the fabric threads whenworking fractional stitches. Whenyou’ve finished the cross stitch, work the backstitch outlines anddetails in one strand of dark grey.your aida band 2in (5cm) longerthan the mat and work the patternrepeat along its length. When youhave finished all the stitching, slipstitch the aida band to the mat andturn the short ends under to neaten.Making the boxOur satin box comes from VikingLoom (ref MWB21, in pewter).
