Member members wishing to write feature stories should submitfeature story requests to Tom Symonds (symonds@miami.edu) by 3 p.m. Sunday.Symonds and the Miami Communications Staff will make every effort to schedule aseparate time to accommodate those requests.ACC TELECONFERENCEMiami head coach Al Golden and the league’s other 13 coaches will be featured on aweekly teleconference each Wednesday during the 2015 football season from 10:30a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Each coach will have 10 minutes to make an opening statementand answer questions. There will be an audio file available of each teleconference onthe Conference’s official website (theACC.com) each Wednesday afternoon as well asa written transcript of the call. Golden’s schedule time is 12:30 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. ETeach Wednesday. Media representatives wishing to participate in the teleconferenceshould contact the ACC Communications Office.LIVE BROADCASTSIt is not permissible for any non-rights holder to broadcast over the air, stream overthe internet (audio or video), or transmit in any other way, any live event withoutthe consent of the University of Miami Athletics Department. Live events includevarsity contests, press conferences (including but not limited to weekly scheduled andpostgame press conferences) and any other group media availability. Exceptions maybe made for any major news-breaking event.SIDELINESMiami follows guides set forth by the NCAA Public Relations Committee, the NCAAFootball Rules Committee, the AFCA and National Press Photographers Association.Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and must wearphotos vests and have credentials visible at all times. In an effort to insure the bestpossible working conditions for media photographers, security personnel will bepatrolling the sidelines. Anyone holding a media pass who is not actively involved incoverage of the game will be escorted from the sideline. Similar procedures will be ineffect in the press box.MEDIA CREDENTIALSRequests for working media and photo credentials should be made in writing by sportseditors or sports directors of accredited media outlets. Requests should be made asearly as possible and should be limited to working media only. Requests made withinseven days of the game may not be considered. Send requests to Tom Symonds(symonds@miami.edu).UNAUTHORIZED CREDENTIAL USECredentials will be issued to working media only. Media credentials are nottransferable and use by anyone other than members of the working media isunauthorized. Media credentials used in an unauthorized manner will be revokedimmediately. JULIO FRENKUniversity PresidentDr. Julio Frenk, a noted leader in global public health and arenowned scholar and academic, was named the sixth presidentof the University of Miami in April 2015. He will assume hisleadership post on August 16, 2015.Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr. Frenk was Deanof the Faculty at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Healthsince January 2009. While at Harvard, he was also the T & GAngelopoulos Professor of Public Health and InternationalDevelopment, a joint appointment with the Harvard KennedySchool of Government.Dr. Frenk served as the Minister of Health of Mexico from 2000to 2006. He pursued an ambitious agenda to reform the nation’shealth system and introduced a program of comprehensiveuniversal health insurance, known as Seguro Popular, whichexpanded access to health care for tens of millions of uninsuredMexicans.Dr. Frenk was the founding director-general of the NationalInstitute of Public Health in Mexico, one of the leadinginstitutions of health education and research in the developingworld. In 1998 Dr. Frenk joined the World Health Organization(WHO) as executive director in charge of Evidence andInformation for Policy, WHO’s first-ever unit explicitly chargedwith developing a scientific foundation for health policy toachieve better outcomes.He also served as a senior fellow in the global health programof the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and as president of theCarso Health Institute in Mexico City. He is the founding chairof the board of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation atthe University of Washington. He also co-chaired the Commissionon the Education of Health Professionals for the 21st Century,which published its influential report in the leading journal TheLancet in 2010, triggering a large number of follow-up initiativesthroughout the world.Dr. Frenk holds a medical degree from the NationalAutonomous University of Mexico, as well as a master of publichealth and a joint doctorate in Medical Care Organization andin Sociology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Hehas been awarded honorary doctorates from several institutionsof higher learning. In September of 2008, Dr. Frenk received theClinton Global Citizen Award for changing “the way practitionersand policy makers across the world think about health.”He is a member of the U.S. Institute of Medicine, AmericanAcademy of Arts and Sciences, and National Academy ofMedicine of Mexico.In addition to his scholarly works, which include more than140 articles in academic journals, as well as many books and bookchapters, he has written two best-selling novels for youngstersexplaining the functions of the human body.BLAKE JAMESDirector of AthleticsMinnesota State-Mankato, 1992Blake James was named the University of Miami’s Director ofAthletics on Feb. 8, 2013. Prior to being named AD, James servedMiami athletics in the roles of Interim AD and Senior AssociateAD for Development and Ticket Operations. James oversaw theday-to-day operations of development, ticket sales and ticketoperations. He also was a member of the Hurricanes’ senior staffand provided sport supervision.James is currently in the fifth year of his third stint at Miamiand is in his third year as the Director of Athletics. Since takingover as Director of Athletics, James has spearheaded a tremendousgrowth in annual giving, ticket sales and merchandise sales, whilemaintaining a strong academic standard for all student-athletes.During this past fiscal year, James oversaw the MiamiHurricane Club surpass its annual fundraising goal of $9.9 millionto the Student-Athlete Excellence Fund. In the classroom, fiveMiami teams were publically honored for being among the top10 percent in the Academic Progress Rates (APR) for the secondconsecutiveyear. In addition, seven Hurricane teams scored 990or better out of a possible 1,000 points - men’s basketball (990),men’s XC (1000), men’s diving (1000), golf (1000), soccer (991) andswimming (1000) in the latest NCAA APR.Under James’ leadership, Miami also has seen several facilityenhancements, beginning with the opening of the SchwartzCenter for Athletic Excellence, the completion of the studentathletetraining table and dining hall, a new artificial and naturalplaying surface and a center hung scoreboard at the BankUnitedCenter.Most recently, James was instrumental in helping Miami strikeone of the largest apparel deals in the country with adidas.James came to UM after spending seven years the Universityof Maine, where he first served as Senior Associate AthleticDirector before serving as Director of Athletics from July2005 to September 2010. As Senior Associate AD, his primaryresponsibilities focused on marketing, ticketing, retail operations,athletic development along with men’s and women’s track andfield, cross country, men’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball.During his tenure at Maine, athletics experienced tremendoussuccess, including three trips to the Frozen Four for the men’s icehockey program and NCAA playoff berths for football, baseball(two), women’s basketball and softball. Additionally, Jamesimplemented a comprehensive $17 million facility improvementplan, which included an indoor practice facility and numerousother facility upgrades and renovations. Academically, theprogram flourished, earning the conference academic cup twiceand maintaining better than a 3.0 GPA.Prior to his stint at Maine, he worked in athletic developmentat Providence College, where he established the “Friars Forever”campaign and the Friar Athletic Fund.James is no stranger to South Florida, beginning his athleticcareer with the University of Miami, working in ticket sales,corporate sales and athletic development. In April 1995, he washired as Miami’s Director of Ticket Sales, serving in that capacityuntil October 1997, when he was named an athletic developmentofficer at the University of Nebraska.
