IssueFriday 25th Feb—11 March 2011President Ajibola at the Ajaokuta steel plantAjaokuta Branch proffers ways to kick start Steel companyThe Ajaokuta branch of the NigerianSociety of Engineers hascome up with strategies on howto kick start the moribund AjaokutaSteel Company Complex.In a presentation to the Presidentof the Nigerian Society ofEngineers, Engr. OlumuyiwaAlade Ajibola who was on a visitto the branch, the Ajaokutabranch said the objective of settingup the Steel company was“to catalyze industrial developmentsince no developed nationsucceeded without the Steel industryand as a strategic industryto give the nation the desiredpolitical and economic security”The Presentation regretted thatthese objectives have not beenrealized but called for steps tobe taken to reverse the situation.Part of that is that a completionschedule of the Steel Plantwhich encompasses the completiontime of all necessary externalinfrastructure must beagreed upon.Others are that all transport facilitiesadjunct to Ajaokuta SteelPlant namely Ajaokuta – Warrirail line,/ port facilities, Rail/Road linkage between Ajaokutaand Jakura mines, Ajaokuta-Okene road ,Ajaokuta –Lokojaroad and Ajaokuta –Anyigbaroad should be addressed urgentlywhile the inter ministerialcommittee on these infrastructurewhich is now moribundshould be revived and sustained.“In view of the strategic positionof the Steel industry forthe development of Nigeria’seconomy Government shouldgo into Joint Venture partnershipwith a reputable organizationwith the aim of runningthe plant on completion. Whileawaiting the completion andintegrated commissioning ofthe plant, some of the completedunits, especially theLight Section Mill, Wire RodMill, Engineering Works Complexand the Thermal PowerPlant should be funded tocontinue operation. Governmentshould prohibit trespassto all mines already designatedto Steel plant, this willguarantee steady supply ofraw materials to the SteelPlant when commissioned”the presentation said in part.The president of the societywho undertook a tour of thecomplex was saddened thatsuch a big project was aban-


NSE Reviews registration process,releases Exam time-tableThe Nigerian society of Engineershas approved anew and dynamic processof membership registration,even as it has released theExamination Time-table forthe year and the feesschedules .In an all inclusive meetingheld at the National Headquartersof the Nigerian Societyof Engineers involvingall branch chairmen, ChiefExaminers, the membershipand the Professionaldepartments of the Society,it was agreed that the newprocess would strengthenregistration and ease off theprocess both at the societyand the Council for theRegulation of Engineeringin Nigeria (COREN).The President of the NigerianSociety of Engineers ,Engr. Olumuyiwa Alade Ajibolacharged the participantsto see the process aspart of the desire of the societyto become a worldclass professional body thatall members would beproud of.He said his administrationwas working tirelessly to liftthe society to an enviableheight and prepare it forgreater achievements.In a remark, the Vice President, Engr. Ali Rabiu saidthe purpose of the meetingwas to rub minds on howbest to smoothly implementNSE Councils approval onProfessional examinationsand interview.He called for all hands to beon deck for this to beachieved.In a paper titled “proposal forstrengthening registration asan engineer through professionalinterview of the NigerianSociety of Engineers(NSE): Input by COREN” theRegistrar of COREN, Engr.Felix Atume, proposed a twopart professional interview tobe conducted at the variousinterviewing centres.He said the part one wouldinvolve the “ Assessment ofthe design submitted by thecandidates; objective questions,technical report submittedby the candidates; assessmentof practical Engineeringproblems and solutionsproffered”According to him, the Part 11will be in three forms: technical, General and oral papers.The Technical paper willcomprise questions on designs, the General paper willinvolve questions in areas ofmanagement, engineering insociety and general questionson technology while theoral aspect will be a one - ononeinteraction with the examiner.Engr. Atume said the part 11examination would be held in8 zones across the countryand COREN would be representedduring the exercise.“ Engineering is a seriousprofession and so must itspractitioners. AhmedAmshi.The chairman of thebranch, Engr IgnatiusEzeh who said he was excitedto receive the delegationsaid the Ajaokutabranch has made significantachievement in thelast one year. Such includedthe holding of seminarsand workshops to updatethe skills of the members,the carrying out of anintensive campaign for thesurvival of the AjaokutaSteel Company Limitedand supporting of the Professionalexamination centres.


President Ajibola at the Geregu PowerPlantNSE happy that Geregu Power plant is run by NigerianengineersThe president of the Nigerian Societyof Engineers, Engr. OlumuyiwaAlade Ajibola has expressedhappiness that the Geregu Powerplant was completely being run byNigerian engineers saying thatwas a pointer to the fact the membersof the Society were capableand professionally skilled to handlecomplex projects.He was speaking when he touredthe facilities at Geregu Powerplant Plc. He commended the engineersfor their dedication to dutyand asked them to keep the flagflying. He however charged themto identify with the Ajaokutabranch of the society to enablethem benefit from the professionaldevelopment programmes of thesociety.In a presentation, Engr. A. Adenugaof the Geregu Power Plantsaid the plant had a capacity togenerate 414 megawatts of electricityfrom its 3 unit gas turbines.However, he said one of the turbineswas down while anotherwas undergoing maintenance andwould be up in a matter of twodays. He said the project was executedat the cost of 195 million eurosby Siemens and was completedin 2006 but was opened in February2007.Engr Adenuga said the operationand maintenance of the plant wasunder the Power Holding Companyof Nigeria (PHCN).The President also visited the WestAfrican Ceramic Industry in Ajaokutato see the production plant. Heurged the owners of the factory toensure that they engaged Nigerianengineers in such a way that theywould gain experience and skill tocontinue running the company afterthe expatriates mainly from Indiareturn to their Country or retire.
