GHANA - NATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE ENERGYSECTOR - ECGThe Energy Commission is fullycommitted to serving effectivelyand efficiently the national interestin the discharge of its statutorymandates and functions.The Commission is equallycommitted to accepting and dealingwith the challenges that Ghanamust meet head on in its quest for atruly functioning competitive energyindustry that creates affordable energysupplies, improves energy reliability,efficiency, and security, andabove all, protects and enhancespublic safety, economic well-being,and environment quality.The Energy Commission welcomesinvestors, Ghanaian, Africanand foreign, in energy efficiencyprojects and programmes in a competitivemarket that would be efficientand environmentally sound.As a one-stop regulatory body, theEnergy Commission encouragesbuilding energy efficiency standardsand insists on appliance energyefficiency requirements.The Ghana Energy commission isa statutory body corporate with perpetualsuccession and a commonseal established by an Act of theGhanaian Parliament, the EnergyCommission Act, 1997 (Act 541).The Commission may sue and besued in its corporate name.The Energy Commission consistsof seven Commissioners appointedby the President of Ghanaacting in consultation with theCouncil of State of the Republic.The seven-member Energy Commissionconsisting of a Chairmanand six Members were sworn intooffice on the 18 of December 2001.FUNCTIONSThe Commission is required by lawto regulate, manage and developthe utilization of energy resourcesin Ghana; to provide the legal, regulatoryand supervisory frameworkfor all providers of energy in thecountry: specifically by the grantingof licenses for the transmission,wholesale, supply, distribution andsale of electricity and natural gas;refining, storage, Bulk distribution,marketing and sale of petroleumproducts and related matters.STRUCTURE OF THECOMMISSIONThe organizational structure of theCommission comprises four (4)main divisions: Power Division,Natural Gas Division, RenewableEnergy (Project and Research) Division,and strategic Planning andPolicy Division and six (6). Membersof the Commission have oversightresponsibilities for thedivisions.The six units are Licensing andRegulation, Public affairs, Inspectorateand Monitoring, Human Resourceand Transport.Bui DamENERGYWORLD / Africa - 2010/11
