COMPANY PROFILE
WORLDWIDE VISION
zwei Messestände der XAL-Gruppe: Unter dem Motto „See the Light“
einladen.
WORLDWIDE VISION
Progress begins in your mind. At XAL, we have always been convinced
that the only limits to reality are those set by our own imagination. That
is exactly why we have come so far, in geographical, organisational and
technological terms. The most recent expansion of our global network
took place at the end of last year when the Belgian brand Wever &
Ducré became part of the XAL Group. A valuable addition in many
ways: Located in the Belgian town of Roeselare, one of Europe’s
strongholds of lighting design, with highly developed production capacities
and well-established distribution channels, Wever & Ducré –
like XAL – has always been a supplier of high-quality architectural lighting
solutions and exceptional design.
This shared philosophy lays the foundation for impressive synergies,
which are, for instance, being realised in Wever & Ducré’s new product
lines, which benefit decisively from XAL’s LED expertise. Similar synergies
are being achieved throughout the entire range of production and procurement
logistics, in cooperation with external designers and in the
expansion of customer care and account management to even more
countries by our employees and partners in those regions. At the same
time, during this intensified internationalisation we are taking care not to
just be present but to rather feel at home around the world – in order to
become the partner of first-choice, meeting the justified expecta tions
for high-quality lighting concepts, state-of-the art technologies and
services as well as tailored solutions which fulfil individual requirements.
That is also what we primarily want to demonstrate when Light + Building
2012 opens its gates on 15 April to its almost 200,000 expected visitors.
This is an easy task for us, on the one hand, because this year’s main
theme is energy efficiency, which correlates perfectly with our core
competences. After all, for years XAL has been consistently applying
LED technology, a topic no one concerned with sustainable lighting
solutions can ignore. On the other hand, this time the XAL Group will be
welcoming visitors at not one but two trade fair booths: Under the slogan
“See the Light” we will show you new possibilities in architectural
lighting and lighting design in a very unusual setting at the XAL booth.
Wever & Ducré will focus on rediscovering proven methods of the past
alongside new inspirations from the rich history of design and development.
The result is a combination of efficiency and aesthetics that we
warmly invite you to discover.
COMPANY PROFILE
FAKTEN
XAL stellt Leuchten und Lichtsysteme für Shop-, Büro-, Hotel- und
Wohnraumbeleuchtung her. Rund 700 Mitarbeiter arbeiten an sechzehn
Standorten in sieben Ländern an Entwicklung, Produktion und Vertrieb.
Der Hauptsitz des Unternehmens befindet sich in Graz, Österreich.
Hier wurde das Unternehmen 1989 von Andreas und Claudia Hierzer
gegründet. Die wichtigsten Tochtergesellschaften sitzen in München,
Zürich, London und New York. Als Geschäftsführer fungieren Andreas
Hierzer, Michael Engel, Harald Dirnberger und Christian Schraml.
MISSION STATEMENT
Logistik.
FACTS
XAL is producing luminaires and lighting systems for shop, office, hotel
and living space lighting. Around 700 employees work at sixteen sites
in seven countries in development, production and marketing. The
headquarters of the company is located in Graz, Austria. Here, the
company was founded by Andreas and Claudia Hierzer in 1989. The
most important subsidiaries are located in Munich, Zurich, London,
and New York. The respective managing directors are Andreas Hierzer,
Michael Engel, Harald Dirnberger, and Christian Schraml.
MISSION STATEMENT
It is our objective to develop lighting solutions, which are extraordinary
in terms of technology and design. For that, research and development
are just as important as first-class know-how in production and logistics.
These competences enable us to respond very flexibly to our customers’
requirements and also realise specially tailored solutions in an extremely
short time.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We as a company see ourselves as part of a larger whole, which we are
committed to. We believe that education and training are substantial for
the success of a company and the social cohesion, and for many years
we have been training an extraordinarily high number of apprentices in
many skilled trades, who after completion of their apprenticeship almost
all continue to work for the company. We support social facilities, so that
they are able to render their valuable work. We also attach particular
importance to environmental and climate protection: we produce where
the majority of our customers are – in Europe and the USA. And thus
avoid having to transport goods from lowwage countries several times
around half the world to the customer. And for investments we decide
for environmentally friendly alternatives: our parent plant in Graz, for
example, is predominantly heated with zero-emission geothermal
energy. We are likewise pleased, that for research and development
the energy efficiency of a lighting system ranks first already – and the
environment surely likes that, too.
LIVING | PRIVATE APARTMENT, NEW YORK | USA
umgebaut. Und das Whitney Museum plant die spektakuläre
Neuerrichtung eines von Renzo Piano entworfenen Museums. Weiter
aufgewertet wurde die unmittelbare Nachbarschaft durch spektakuläre
Neubauten von Frank Gehry (Zentrale des globalen Automobil-
Zulieferungskonzerns IAC) und Jean Nouvel (luxuriöses Atelier- und
Apartmenthaus „Nouvelchelsea“).
Design und New Yorker Lifestyle: Hochwertige Materialien
und Spots (MOVE IT) gewählt.
Previously known for its sketchy pastiche of meat factories and night
clubs, the Meatpacking District today is in the middle of a process of
social and cultural transformation. The High Line, for example, an elevated
railway in use until 1980, was converted into a public park. And
the Whitney Museum construction of a spectacular museum designed
by Renzo Piano. The neighbourhood was further upgraded by wonderful
new buildings by Frank Gehry (the headquarters of IAC, a global
automobile shipping company) and Jean Nouvel (“Nouvelchelsea”, a
luxurious atelier and apartment building). But it’s not just New York’s
art and architecture scene that has discovered the district in recent
years; designer labels and top gastronomy destinations have also arrived.
In the middle of this vibrant spirit of optimism, a 320 m² penthouse
located directly on High Line Park is going to be adapted to the
needs of its new residents, both in terms of function and design. The
result is a mix of styles from European design circles and the New York
lifestyle: high-quality materials and discreet colours convey value and
a casual urbanity. Each room draws life from the direct visual reference
to the fascinating world outside. A massive Marilyn Monroe relief in the
living area serves as the heart of the apartment, a spatially functional
yet artistic tribute to the city that never sleeps. The lighting design includes
light curtains (JANE wall system) and spotlights (Move It) to
match the countless points of light that illuminate New York’s nighttime
skyline. Arranged in the shape of a grid, the lights multiply in the mirrors
and bathe the rooms in a clear glow that envelops the space and its
occupants, creating a pleasant, soothing noblesse and helping Marilyn
with an appearance that is all the more effective for being so reserved.
LIVING | PRIVATE RESIDENCE | AUSTRIA
Indem man
So
Designing a residential house is a challenge in many respects. For
example, the process that ultimately leads to the finished design must
always take account of the conditions of the site, the context and the
personal wishes of the client. This makes each house unique in its own
way. And yet there are also the stylistic constants of the architect which
concern the formal composition and construction of the rooms and
which constantly recur in his or her designs. In the specific example
of a house in Graz, this symbiosis of purposefulness and personal
style becomes particularly clear: for a start, the sloping site, which lay
close to a two-storey building. By placing the solid reinforced concrete
building at an angle to the slope, the floor decks span the entire depth
of the building, enabling an open floor plan design. A raised viewing
terrace was also created in front of the living rooms on the upper floor
as a “pleasant side-effect” on the cube that seems to float freely above
the slope. The bed rooms and sauna are downstairs. Upon entering
the house, the simple cubic shapes and minimal use of materials find
their counterparts in multifunctional and architectural elements, whose
functions only become apparent when in use. For example, doors and
walls slide up into floor-to-ceiling wall cabinets. A central area with open
stairs and an exit to the garden penetrates the full height of the building
to create a feeling of airiness, while large openings that reach up to
the ceiling extend the inside to the outside. Suspended ceilings create
the preconditions for integrating the lighting, which in turn creates
lightness by illuminating freestanding objects in such a way that
they lose their outlines, while the spatial structures remain visible and
tangible at every turn.
RETAIL | MARION HEINRICH FASHION STORE, MUNICH | GERMANY
In Ergänzung
If you want to bring together exclusive designer labels such as Azzedine
AlaÏa, Tom Ford and Manolo Blahnik on three floors in a way that does
not ignore the individuality of each designer, look no further than the
redesign of the Marion Heinrich shop-in-shop concept in Munich’s
Residenzstrasse and its attached Chloé Flagship Store. Similar to a
classical pre-war residential apartment with several walk-through
rooms, the space allows visitors to proceed through the store, shop by
shop. The interior of each room reflects the character of the designer
on display: from exclusive to classic and discreet. Wall niches and integrated
shelving present shoes and diverse accessories, complementing
the lavish interior design. A mix of antique and modern furniture,
elegant white wall coverings and a uniform dark herringbone
parquet flooring creates a warm, intimate atmosphere. And the gracious
lounge area, with its leather sofa and view of the imposing Munich
Opera, invites guests to linger. The light concept shines with noble reserve:
within the otherwise white surface structure, there is a contrasting
black design in the mounted spotlights, which are recessed into the
light tracks. Despite all of the accents, however, the effect is nevertheless
a peaceful ceiling profile without “dancing” lighting fixtures. Furthermore,
to ensure brilliant, dramatic and shadow-free staging, the
noble products are indirectly illuminated with LED systems from the
NANO family, placed as closely as possible to the product. DOT-type
panel lights in a custom size and design were integrated into the ceilings
of the connecting passageways. When the visitor passes from one
room to the other, this lighting design serves as a moment of transition
that carefully prepares the guest for a new scenario of design and fashion.
RETAIL | CAPSULA MULTIBRAND STORE, BUDAPEST | HUNGARY
zeitgenössisches Zuhause fanden, zeichnen zwei junge heimische
Energiesparende
Halogen-Leuchten in Kombination mit LED-Leuchtbändern und
-spots erschienen den Architekten als perfekte Kombination,
um eine möglichst hohe Farbreproduktion bei gleichzeitig
möglichst niedrigem Energieverbrauch zu erzielen.
Andrássy Street, one of Budapest’s largest and most famous shopping
streets, was declared a world heritage site ten years ago. The magnificent
boulevard, surrounded by neo-Renaissance buildings in the heart
of the Hungarian metropolis, has always been home to hot spots, from
elite design to international top-class gastronomy. The fact that such
luxury brands as Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani and Givenchy recently
found a new contemporary home in a particularly attractive building
must be attributed to two young Hungarian architects whose declared
aim was to create a space that resembled a gallery, emphasising the
uniqueness of the wares on display there. And sure enough: the unusual
height and brightness of the store attracts the attention of passersby
before they even enter. Once you are inside the store, a seemingly
endless expanse spreads before you. The historical substance
was completely removed from the core of the building, creating a large
space in which material, furniture, surfaces and ornaments form a visual
unity that captures the senses and imparts an aura of airy luxury.
The mannequins and the clothes they wear are presented to the viewers
on simple cubic pedestals, displayed as if they were art objects an
impression that is amplified by the brilliant white ceilings and walls, as
well as the oversized black glass splinters that hang from the ceiling,
tapering down to a sharp point. Recessed or completely hidden light
sources were used in order to support a visual composition that focuses
fully on the displayed products. Energysaving metal halide lights,
combined with LED light bands and spotlights, seemed like the perfect
combination to the architects, creating the highest possible colour reproduction
while consuming as little energy as possible.
in symmetrischen Abständen bündig integrierten Lichtbänder in Wand
In a small German city like Straubing, so visibly shaped by traditions,
it takes courage to decide to build a practice that follows such purist
architectural design as this one does. Especially because it wasn’t easy
for the contractor, as a “non-local”, to really assess the mentality of the
people in the region. Yet their courage was rewarded: The sleek elegance
of the rooms, white throughout, paired with discreet lighting, was
welcomed mightily by the citizens of Straubing. The medical practice
became the talk of the town – in a positive way. And quite rightly so. The
body of the reception desk, made of Corian, the furniture in the treatment
rooms, and the cement concrete appearance of the poured polyurethane
floors constitute a successful symbiosis, one with soft
curves and a minimalist, clear design. Organic seating furniture and
windows extending to the floor, offering a view of Straubing’s old town,
amplify this impression of openness and generosity, inviting visitors to
relax before their treatment. The illumination design incorporates various
kinds of lighting to create a bright and friendly ambience that eschews
a clinical atmosphere. Strips of light, integrated in symmetrical
intervals and flush in the walls and ceiling, create balanced illumination
with indirect lighting. A combination of different lamp types, such as
halogen, fluorescent and LEDs, creates additional suspense as their
light is reflected softly in the glossy matte surface of the light grey floor.
This ultimate in technical achievement reflects the quality of the surgical
practice and was honoured with the 2011 Design Prize.
