4 5PASSION FOR THE PROVINCEDifferent, plural and unique are three frequently used adjectives when asked todescribe the province of Seville in the broadest sense. A difference and a richnessin its way of being marked by the traces of different cultures throughout its history. These peculiar forms of being and feeling are reflected in traditions revealed withan unusual force during the Holy Week. Because the Holy Week, name of a religiousevent associated with the city of Seville via an inevitable and well deserved binomial, focuses the eyes of the whole world, on the eve of the springtime, with an abundanceof sentiment, religiosity, art and aesthetics. But there is another Holy Week, of the other Seville, which displays its colors in thevillages of the province, also in the prelude to springtime.A Week of Passion that reveals -as well as the feeling and spirituality- the heritage, the culture and the traditions of our municipalities.Because our province is a treasure for cultural tourism and one of religiousmotivation. Not in vain, there are 14 villages who have declared their Holy Week asan event of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia. The artistic heritage, the crafts, theembroidery, the imagery and in general the whole culture linked to the Holy Week inour towns, are attractive enough to consider this province as really unique.A religious tourism which opens up a wide range of possibilities and to which wededicate our efforts and work to realize specific proposals through routes of theheritage, crafts, gastronomy or other religious display and events throughout the year,in the municipalities of the province of Seville. From the Provincial Council of Seville, we want to continue influencing the momentumof these our traditions and promote them outside our borders. This comprehensiveguide is a good example of that, because if there is another Seville, there is anotherHoly Week too.Fernando Rodríguez VillalobosPresident of the Provincial Council of SevilleHoly Week is one of the most important events of Seville, and this has been reflectedfor centuries in the 104 municipalities of the entire province, In fact, in 14 of them, HolyWeek is considered as an event of National Tourism Interest of Andalusia: Alcalá deGuadaíra, Alcalá del Río, Carmona, Castilleja de la Cuesta, Coria del Río, Écija, Estepa,Guadalcanal, La Roda de Andalucía, Las Cabezas de San Juan, Marchena, Morón dela Frontera, Osuna y Pilas. Throughout this guide we will place special emphasis onthem, but without forgetting the rest, where the quality of the brotherhoods is alwaysincreasing. The brotherhoods of the municipalities of Seville have contributed to the enhancementand glory of the Holy Week. Heirs of a centuries-old devotion, they provide with eachone of the images through the streets of the towns, moments of solemnity, meditationand faith towards Our Lord Jesus Christ, attracting every year more followers to enjoyit. As spring blooms, the province of Seville is full of tradition, art, passion, glory…to commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord. A Marian fervorthat transcends borders, a common feeling forged and consolidated with the passingof the years. These brotherhoods are responsible for making sense of the Holy Week formingprocessions of penance and accompanying the Sacred Titulars, working right throughthe year so that over these days people can enjoy moments that will remain foreveretched on their mind. There is no special municipality or brotherhood, but all togetherwith a continuing effort, they give us these unique moments. This guide aims to show the exuberance of the sacred art of the province of Seville, inaddition to paying tribute to the great scenic and monumental treasure of our towns. The guide is divided into six regions containing all the municipalities of the province.Within each region, you will find information on each brotherhood by location, withthe most characteristic features. At the end of that information you can find additionalfacts about some municipalities, highlighting aspects of their processional routes, aswell as useful information, important sites to visit and the gastronomy of the year atthat time. There are also other interesting sections to better understand the ritualsand customs of this religious event. This guide has been prepared with a great respect and affection towards the mostimportant traditions of each municipality. For this purpose, it is been created adocumentary source involving nearly three hundred brotherhoods. With these lines, we want to thank for their assistance every corporation, municipality, brotherhood… who, selflessly, with much interest and cooperation, have contributedto the realization of this Guide to the Holy Week in the province of Seville.Manuel RodríguezJournalist

6 7THE SOUND OF THE HOLY WEEK: BANDS AND SAETASThe music of the Holy Week is provided by the Sodalities “Cofradías”, whosesounds accompany the processions of penance.Silence is one of the most characteristic sounds of a procession, although it isunimaginable without a beating of a drum or a bugle chord.THE RELIGIOUS FLOAT “PASO”: MOUNTING, FLORALADORNS, MELTING THE WAX, CLEANING THESILVERWARE…Countdown to Holy Week begins in Lent as preparations are intesifying in all thetemples and Brotherhood Houses of each of the Sodalities “Cofradías” formingprocessions of penance.Normally, it all starts by cleaning the embroidery and the gold or silver ware of thefloats: the silver or golden poles supporting the ornate canopy, the candles, the smallgrilles “respiraderos” on each side of the float… Often, the provost is responsiblefor coordinating this work for he is the person appointed by the Governing Board“Junta de Gobierno” and, among other functions, ensures that everything aboutthe mounting of the float is keeping the right pace, in addition to ensuring thepreservation of the heritage.Outside in the street, the foreman “capataz” is in charge of making “la igualá” in orderto get the best team of bearers “costaleros”. Another work, prior to the processionof the brotherhood, lies in melting the wax of the candles. It is a ritual in which theyplace each of the candles, one by one, in the candlesticks, once it is fixed to the float. The flowers are placed the day before the procession, often very differents, exoticflowers or much more classic native species. For the images of Virgin Mary, whiteor pastel shade flowers are widely used: gladiolus, orchids, iris, orange blossoms, roses… As for the floats of the Christ or Mistery floats, the predominant colour is red, although the species can be the same. It depends on the brotherhood.Bands like “La Presentación al Pueblo” from Dos Hermanas, “Santa Cecilia” or “LaVirgen del Castillo” from Lebrija, “Nuestra Señora de la Granada” from Guillena, the “Filarmónica” from Pilas, the “Filarmónica del Carmen” or “Nuestra Señora dela Oliva” from Salteras (this is one of the oldest Bands in the region of El Aljarafe),among many others, are proper names of this kind of music in our land.As for the “Saeta” (literally, arrow), it is a religious song without musicalaccompaniment, sung by gender specialists and addressed to each titular imageof the corporations. Lyrics are based on passages relating to the Passion of JesusChrist. It is an improvised music you can enjoy only during the Holy Week and hasits roots in Andalusia.Since 1986 Marchena has been home to one of the most important schools forlearning how to sing the “Saeta”.THE CLOTHES OF THE “NAZARENO” PENITENTSThe titular images in the procession of every brotherhood are accompanied bythe “Nazarenos”. One of the most important and characteristic elements of thisclothing is the “capirote” pointed hood, this cone shaped hood is traditionally madeof cardboard, although since some years ago it is also made of plastic grid, muchmore practical and durable. The clothing of the Nazareno is composed of several pieces: robe-tunic, maskhood, cloak, girdle-cord, gloves… that change according to the Rules “Reglas” ofthe sodality or brotherhood. These garments are often made of twill or “ruan”, a very versatile fabric. Full tunicrobespieces ranging between 150 to 600 euro, in the case of using velvet.

40 41ALCALÁ DE GUADAÍRACARMONALA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSThe locals live vehemently their Week of Passion. Good Friday is the bigday for all. Late night -or early morning- the brotherhood of Nuestro PadreJesús Nazareno, María Santísima del Socorro and San Juan Evangelistagoes through the streets of the town for more than eight hours. This corporation has a group of “armaos” -lit. armed people- and jewish“judíos” escorting the float of Our Lord, they announce on Holy Thursdaymorning the “Sentencia de Cristo”, the sentence of Jesus Christ, and theyare in charge of staging the scene of the “Prendimiento” (the arrest).Next to San Roque Chapel occurs the “little runs”, the “Carreritas de SanJuan”, moment in which the three floats meet. The Holy Week of Alcalá deGuadaíra has been declared of National Tourism Interest of Andalusia inSeptember 2001.In this municipality certain monumentsshould be highlighted such as the“Dragon bridge” (Puente del Dragón),the only figurative bridge in the world. The Dolmens of Gandul, the FortifiedMedieval Enclosure or the Mills onthe banks of Guadaíra river, as wellas Santiago el Mayor Parish-Church,San Sebastián Parish-Church or SanMiguel Church, among others.Among the most typical dishes isthe “cocido de acelgas en colorao”(chard stew “in red”) or the “ajomeneao”, and sweets as the “tortade Alcalá” (cake) or the “bizcotelas”filled biscuits, among others, withoutunderestimating the well knownbread (pan) of Alcalá de Guadaíra,rated as one of the best in Spain.Holy Week in Carmona takesplace between Palm Sundayand Holy Saturday and it hasbeen declared as NationalTourism Interest of Andalusiasince December 1999. Thereare a total of eight brotherhoodsof penance. Among thesecorporations should be notedthe Cristo de la Amargura, oldest processional image inAndalusia, dated in 1521. Themost characteristic of thisholiday week is enjoying theimage of the floats through themain streets of the municipality, mostly narrow and always fullof faithful devotees.Holy Monday, from San Felipe Church, the brotherhood of Señor de laAmargura and María Santísima del Mayor Dolor makes processional exit.Exit and entry to the temple are especially difficult because of the ogival, pointed, double gate forcing the bearers to make a great effort on theirknees. One of the most characteristic constructions in Carmona is the walledenclosure. In 1868 was accidentally discovered a Roman Necropolis ofa great historical value. Churches as San Felipe, San Pedro, El Salvador,Prioral (priory) de Santa María, San Bartolomé or the Convent of SantaClara, are part of the most important historical heritage of this municipality. It is worth noting typical dishes such as the tomato soup, spinach withchickpeas or the potatoes “en amarillo” with codfish. Sweets as the mostpopular “English cake”, the chestnut stew with cinnamon or the “torrijas”with sweet wine.LA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODS

42 43ÉCIJAMARCHENALA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSThis municipality of the province of Seville is the only with up to 14brotherhoods forming processions of penance during the Holy Week.In September 1998, the processions in their entirety were declared asNational Tourism Interest of Andalusia.Écija bends over backwards for its Great Week as shown every year by thelocals adorning the village the best they can in order to make the visitorfeel at home. When on Easter Sunday (Resurrection Sunday) the last of thebrotherhoods make their entrance into Mayor de Santa Cruz Parish-Church, locals do not think Holy Week is over, but that there is one day lessuntil the next Palm Sunday. It should be noted as buildings of religious architecture the Church ofSantiago, Santa María, San Juan, San Gil Church and Mayor de Santa CruzParish-Church.The cuisine of Écija is configured with a basis of tradition and recipespreserved through the ages with each of the civilizations that have passedby this municipality. The “espinacas labradas” - “carved spinach”, the“flamenquín” - meat and ham roll, the “sopa de gato” - “soup of cat”, oliveoil cakes, the “bizcochos marroquíes” - sponge cake, or the “pestiños” aresome specialties of the rich gastronomy of this municipality. This is one of the towns inwhich Holy Week has a specialtaste of authenticity, historyand true tradition.Locals know how to lovinglycare for every detail in orderto this Week of Passion bedifferent each year whilekeeping the old taste. It isconsidered as one of the most“romantic” Holy Week becausekeeping many elements ofnineteenth century. Since June2001 has been catalogued asan event of Cultural Interest inAndalusia. And this Holy week has its ownsounds too, the old Saetas, furthermore, this is one of the birthplaces of this “sung prayer”. ThePassion is still staging in Plaza Arriba square, by reading Pilate’s Sentence, the “Verónica”, and the “Pregón del Angel” -announcement of the angel-.From Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday which is the day dedicated tovisit the “Pasos” -floats in the temples, Marchena offers to its visitors manyunforgettable as unrepeatable moments that will remain in their memory.Among the most outstanding monuments are San Juan Bautista Church, the Urban Wall, the Arch of the Rose “Arco de la Rosa” or the Castle“Castillo de la Mota - Palacio Ducal”, among others.LA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSIn pastry, highlighting the “tartas de hojaldre” pie pastry, “bizcochos”sponge cake, or the butter cakes “tortas de manteca”. Among the mosttypical dishes, the spinach with chickpeas, the “marchenero” stew, cod insauce and tomato soup.

44 45ESTEPAOSUNALA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSHoly Week is one of the most important events of every year, and has beendeclared of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia since June 2001. The“Carrera Oficial” -official route- in Estepa begins at the corner of Cristostreet and runs to the corner with Padre Alfonso street. All the brotherhoodspass through that common place. So, it is a point of a great interest toenjoy the processional cortège during all the week. From Palm Sunday, with the “Borriquita”, the “Hermandad de los Niños”(brotherhood of the children) to Holy Saturday with “El Santo Entierro”brotherhood, all those visiting Estepa will be dazzled by the solemnatmosphere in every corner of this municipality.Among the most importantbuildings it is noteworthy the“Torre del Homenaje” Tower andthe “Torre de la Victoria”, thewalled enclosure of the Alcázar(15th century), Churches as SantaMaría de la Asunción, NuestraSeñora de los Remedios, SanSebastián, Del Carmen or SantaClara Convent and the Castillo dela Mota - Palacio Ducal, Castle-Palace and the Casa PalacioMarqués de Cerverales. The streets of this village are fully decorated during its Great Week. Tencofradías-brotherhoods form procession to do processions of penanceinside one of the most important celebrations of La Campiña region. It wasdeclared of National Tourism Interest in 1999. One of the leading aspectsof this Holy Week is the particular way they have to carry the floats, not by“men with a sack” (lit. “Costaleros”, bearers) but on their shoulders insidethe float. Some brotherhoods have changed to the traditional style, as themost of the corporations of the province, although others are still keepingthe old style.Oldest brotherhood is La Vera-Cruz, with almost 500 years of history. TheGreat day in Osuna is Good (or Holy) Friday. One of the most important buildings is the old University of Osuna, a 16thcentury rectangular building.Osuna has a wide and varied gastronomic offer. We speak about the“repapalillas”, made from eggs, milk, flour, spring onion, garlic and parsley,or the “ardoria”, similar to “salmorejo” vegetable cream. The thistle stew, beans and peas stew… And about sweets, tasty “gañotes”, “crestillas”,“arroz con leche” creamed rice, lemon pie, almond cake or traditional“gachas” porridge.LA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSThe typical sweet par excellenceis the well known “mantecado”special Christmas sweet withalmonds, flour and lard. “Rosquitosde almendras trenzados” -ringshaped pastry with almonds- the“gachas” porridge, the “honeyflowers”, “pestiños”, “sopaipas”and “hochíos”.

46 47FUENTES DE ANDALUCÍALA CAMPIÑAThe Holy Week of this town has its origins in 16th century when theHermandad (brotherhood) La Santa Vera - Cruz was founded amongmany other manifestations of public religiosity, as a result of the CatholicReformation initiated by the Roman Catholic Church to counteractthe schisms occurring in northern Europe. This corporation offers thechance to visit a museographic collection with the best valuables of thebrotherhood. After this many others were founded, until the 21st centurywhen the Cristo de la Paz brotherhood was founded, better known as “ LaBorriquita “.LA CAMPIÑATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSToday, six brotherhoods form processions of penance during the Holy Weekof this town. It is worth looking at the exit and the entrance of the floats, when the bearers of different brotherhoods are striving to bring out thecanopy of the floats through the small doors of the temples by means ofwheels placed under the floats. Handmade embroidery of the canopy ofNuestra Señora de los Dolores, of the La Humildad brotherhood, are verycharacteristic, as well as the beautiful embroidery of the masterly cloakof the exit from the temple of María Santísima del Mayor of Vera - Cruzbrotherhood, made by the Madres Mercedarias (nuns) in 19th century.Something interesting: There is a team of bearer women (“costaleras”)who carries Our Lord image of the Santo Entierro procession. The Great Week of Fuentes de Andalucía is a part of the unique baroquearchitecture by the Ruiz Florindo, highlighting the temples of SantaMaría la Blanca and San José, the convents of La Encarnación or SanFrancisco as well as De la Aurora and El Calvario chapels, these templesare interspersed in a network of paved streets, 18th century sumptuousfaçades and slender viewpoints.THE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSFuentes de Andalucía has a cuisine of a great value with typical specialtiessuch as fried or tomato sauce cod, asparagus or cod omelette, spinachwith chickpeas stew, “pisto” ratatouille, “gachas” porridge, “flowers”,“torrijas” kind of special French toast, or “arroz con leche” creamed rice. Also highlights the very typical “entornao” sweet made from sugar, flour, cinnamon, sesame, water and ground pepper used as a colouring todistinguish from other sweets.

62 63ALCALÁ DEL RÍOCORIA DEL RÍOGUADALQUIVIR-DOÑANATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSThe scent of incense, theperfume that emanates fromthe orange trees blossomand the aroma of typicalpastries of these days, mixwell to anounce, once again, the Great Week of Alcalá delRío considered since March2003 of National TourismInterest in Andalusia. After five centuries of history, many traditions are still alive. For example, the Hermandad-Brotherhood- del Nazarenostill reads the Sentence whenthe Procession leaves thetemple.Good (Holy) Friday nighttakes place the ceremonyof the Descendimiento (the“descent” from the Cross ), two Brothers dressed as Santos Varones (holymen) pull out the nails and descend the Christ from the Cross and presenthim to the Virgen de la Soledad.Among the most important monuments of Alcalá del Río is Santa Maríade la Asunción Parish-Church. Its interior highlights superb altarpieces ofthe 16th century and there is also a mudéjar style Tower which can beseen from many parts of the town. And San Gregorio de Osset Hermitage(Ermita) of a great artistic value.Holy Week in Coria del Río was declared of National Tourism Interest inAndalusia in June 2001 because of the most striking moments during thecourse of the Hermandad de la Vera-Cruz, when the titulars have to go upand down a 100 metre long slope once. At the end of the slope they aregreeted with Saetas (popular sacred songs) and applause as the sound isportraying the solemn moment. In the morning of Easter Sunday occurs the “Abrazos” (hugs) an extraevangelical scene full of emotion for the faithfull devouts. The Paso -floatofVirgen de la Soledad, now without Pallium - canopy and with a beautifulcolour cloack, goes to the Church to meet her Son Jesus, Resurrected. The popular ceremony comes to such an extent that the Pasos seemto be in touch, touching each other, simulating a “hug” to celebrate theResurrection of Jesus Christ.Among the most important monuments of Coria del Río: The Parish - Churchof Nuestra Señora de la Estrella, The Chapel of San Juan Bautista, theHouse-Museum of Blas Infante and the Museum of Andalusian Autonomy.By Lent one can enjoy in every house the popular “Orejitas de Haba”,deformed expression of “Orejitas de Abad” (Abbot’s little Ears, literally), inhonor to San Antonio Abad.GUADALQUIVIR-DOÑANATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSSalted dishes such as Codfish in tomato sauce or the fried “Pavía”(hake)are crowned with most delicious sweets: traditional Torrijas (special Frenchtoast), Pestiños, Rosquitos, or the very popular Gañotes.

88 89LA RODA DE ANDALUCÍAMORÓN DE LA FRONTERASIERRA SURTHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODS2004 was one of the most important years for the residents of this town, since that year the value of its Holy Week was recognized and cataloguedin February as an event of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia. Formerly, the “Pasos” floats were on wheels, but over the years the traditionalSevillian manner was adopted. Processions begin on Holy Wednesday withthe brotherhood of Jesus Nazareno, on this occasion the image makes itsexit hands tied and accompanied by a great silence only broken by themany “Saetas” sung by the faithful devotees.Maundy Thursday comes out the Cristo del Perdón, corporation foundedin the fifties by the former railroad workers. The image of the Lord, titularof this Cofradía-brotherhood, was the first in the province to be carried by“costaleras” women bearing the floats.Among the most important monuments, emphasis must be put on theChapel of the Convent of Siervas del Evangelio nuns and the baroqueChurch of Santa Ana.One of the most typical sweets is the “hochío”, cake that can be madesweet or salty and filled to taste, together with other specialties as“pestiños”, “gachas” porridge, and “magdalenas” cupcakes.Holy Week of this village was declared Feast of National Tourism Interest ofAndalusia from July 2002. The origin of its processions is over 500 years. All the brotherhoods form processions of penance towards the ChurchMayor de San Miguel Arcángel, one of the most important temples. 96 97CASTILBLANCO DE LOS ARROYOSVÍA DE LA PLATATHE TOWNS AND THEIR BROTHERHOODSOne of the most important and representative events of this municipalityis Holy Week. 98Passion for HistoryGoing back to the most immediate history of the Brotherhoods of the province ofSeville, we can say that the beginning of the 20th century was prolific in terms ofCofradías-Brotherhoods. Many were founded and in many municipalities numerousimages were acquired and soon became a part of the patrimonial legacy of thesemunicipalities. In the thirties the outlook changed when the Second Republic isproclaimed and Civil War broke out in 1936.Catholic Church in general underwent a high number of attacks endangering itsheritage. Both the Brothers and the faithful devotees played an important role insafeguarding, even threatening their very existence as they hid the religious carvingsin their homes. All the Cofradías-Brotherhoods suspended their worship for any eventhad to be approved and supervised by the Civil Government.Religious images were burnt, temples were destroyed with all their belongingsinside… Almost 40% of the towns of the province of Seville lost their assets which, consequently, led to a difficult task to recover them. At the end of Civil War and sincethe forties, there were perspective changes with the beginning of the creation andthe rising of new Brotherhoods, and since the fifties there has been a resurgence anda strengthening of the wealth of the Cofradías-Brotherhoods that we know today.Manuel RodríguezJournalist
