Looking back over the
past year, I consider myself
honored to recount the many
accomplishments of the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley.
With the dedication of Club
leadership, staff, volunteers and
generous supporters like you,
2007 has yet again seen overall
success throughout every area
of this great organization. What
continually impresses me is the tremendous growth the Club
builds on year after year. This success of course extends beyond
the effort of the Club, and is largely a reflection of the giving
community of supporters that also believe in our mission to
inspire and enable the healthy development of all children to
realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring
members of the community.
With your help, we were able to reach more than 7,700 children
this year, giving families affordable, high quality options for
daycare, before and after school care, and fun programs like
sports leagues and performing arts classes. A recent survey of our
members yielded outstanding results that I am very pleased to
share with you:
• 74% of our members feel better about themselves since
they joined the Club.
• 70% have found a role model or mentor at the Club.
• 80% say the Club gives them a place they feel like
they belong.
• 61% say they do better in school because of the help
they get at the Club.
• 85% have made new friends at the Club.
With results like these, we know that we are having a positive
impact on the children we serve, and we couldn’t do it without
your support. Thank you for helping make a difference to the kids
at the Club!
I’m proud to say that our efforts to get the word out to our
community about our outstanding programs were once again
recognized at the national level. Our Club’s marketing and
communications efforts were selected as some of the best in the
country from among 4,400 Boys & Girls Clubs across the nation.

Letter
The Club received four Marketing & Communications Awards
from Boys & Girls Clubs of America: the Gold award for the best
Boys & Girls Club website in the nation, www.bgchv.org, and
three Silver awards recognizing our overall marketing strategy,
our outstanding Club publications, and special events of all types
including kids’ events at the Club and our annual fundraisers.
Our generous family of supporters made our 29th Annual Benefit
Dinner and Auction fundraising event the most successful
fundraiser the Club has held to date, with a turnout of more than
750 guests. Your support helped raise more than $430,000 to
support the Club’s award-winning youth development programs
and provide scholarships for disadvantaged youth.
Exciting and challenging developments are on the horizon. As
you know, the Building Dreams campaign to build a new Boys &
Girls Club on the campus of Golden West College is underway. To
date, we have raised $2 million of the $6 million needed to make
this dream a reality. With the support of the community, a new
preschool and school age youth center will serve an additional
2,500 children per year from northern Huntington Beach and
the surrounding areas. We plan to break ground on Phase I of
this project in late spring 2008, with plans to open the new
preschool center next fall and continue with construction of a
gymnasium and school-age facility late into next year. We know
we can succeed with this ambitious project because dedicated
supporters like you know that some of the most disadvantaged
children and families in our community need this new Club to
provide affordable childcare and youth programs.

Preschools
At our preschools, children as young as 6 weeks receive loving care and get to explore the world in fun
and creative ways that encourage their healthy development. Tots help grow vegetables in a garden, read
stories with caring staff, get moving outside on playgrounds with equipment that is just their size, do art
activities, practice writing, play with blocks, puzzles, and games, pretend to be anything they can imagine,
and have a great time! And, the Club helps connect families with community resources that keep children
healthy by providing on-site immunization clinics, health and developmental screenings. Working together
with families, we make sure that kids start out on the path to success.
clubhouse AcAdemy
At the ClubHouse Academy, kids of all ages have the opportunity to get fit, have fun and explore their
creative sides through classes from a wide array of dance styles, gymnastics, tae kwon do, karate, voice
lessons, and an award-winning theatre program. The ClubHouse Academy’s arts and athletics programs
bridge the gap between recreational programs and expensive gyms or academies with intensive
training. Neither too easy nor too advanced or expensive, classes at the ClubHouse Academy are just
right for most families who want their children to have a high quality arts or athletics experience in a
fun and affordable setting.

Our Kingston and Huntington Beach Branches have so much to offer to school age youth. Each Club
has an education center with computer lab and library, a games room, an activity room, a teen room, a
Kindergarten room, a teaching kitchen, an arts and crafts
room, a gymnasium, and outdoor play areas.
gAmes rooms And Activity centers
Giving kids a place to relax and have fun, each Club has
rooms that are just for recreation. The activity centers are
set up like giant living rooms with games, Legos, and ageappropriate
movies, giving kids a taste of home while they
are at the Club. Games Rooms are filled with pool, foosball,
and air hockey tables. Kids can even join in games room
tournaments, teaching them about healthy competition
and good sportsmanship.

educAtion centers
Through programs in the Clubs’ education rooms, including tutoring, homework help, and computer
instruction, kids get the support they need to succeed in school. More than 60% of members report that
they do better in school because of the help that they get at the Club. In the education centers, children
have access to computer labs with the latest technology, which they can use to do homework, explore
the Internet in a safe and supervised environment, play learning games, and learn digital arts programs
that teach them about graphic design, digital photography, digital music making, digital movie making,
and web design. Kids from our Clubs have even won national competitions for their exceptional graphic
design and web design work. The Club incorporates teaching moments into all its activities and makes
academics fun through programs like the “Race for Reading” competition, which got Club kids to read more
than 50,000 pages this summer.
teen rooms
A special space just for kids ages 11 and up makes older kids feel special and provides a place for activities
just for them, including access to computers, homework help, service groups, games, and more. On
Friday nights, the Club stays open late for teens, providing movies, pizza and snacks to keep kids in a safe,
supervised and fun environment. Teen room programs give kids the knowledge they need to make good
choices about their health and the challenges of adolescence, too. Smart Girls and Passport to Manhood
encourage teens and pre-teens to make smart life choices and have healthy attitudes about drugs, alcohol,
relationships, body image, and more through mentoring and positive peer pressure. Service groups like the
Torch and Keystone Clubs teach teens to get involved in making their community a better place and give
them the opportunity to build good character and become leaders.
teAching Kitchens
In our teaching kitchens, kids learn that eating healthy can be fun
and tasty and they develop important life skills. Nutrition consultants
teach kids how to make their own snacks and meals and how to
choose foods that are good fuels for their bodies. Eating their own
culinary creations is a reward in itself for the kids!
gymnAsiums And outdoor PlAy AreAs
Through the Club’s basketball, soccer, and football leagues, nearly
2,000 children have the opportunity to play together, learn about
sportsmanship and have fun. Programs like Triple Play get kids
engaged in activities that encourage good nutrition, physical
fitness and good self esteem. A recent survey of our sports leagues
participants showed that 67% feel more confident, 84% have made
new friends because of joining the Club and 71% have found a mentor
or role model in their coaches. Every child at the Club is a winner,
whether they are new to sports or gifted athletes like Club alumni

celebrAtion oF dAy For Kids
In June 2007, the Club kicked off summer with its best ever turnout at the Boys & Girls Clubs Day for
Kids celebration at the Kingston Branch. In conjunction with the City of Fountain Valley’s 50th Anniversary
celebration, more than 2,000 children and parents joined in this free, fun-filled family event to give children
a chance to spend a special day with parents and other adult role models in their lives. This annual event was
created to allow families in the community a time to take a break from their busy lives and hectic schedules
to focus on time spent together. Highlights from this memorable afternoon of fun included:
cArnivAl
The fun and games took place all afternoon with both an indoor and outdoor carnival featuring two
bounce houses, face painting, a cotton candy booth, and 12 themed games designed to make every child
a winner! The program rooms inside the Club were turned into various arts & craft stations where kids
used freedom of expression to create their own works of art.
heAlthy Kid FAir
Making the day both fun and educational, nearly 20 local community, health, and safety organizations
set up booths in the gymnasium to offer a wealth of resources to families and children. The Healthy
Kid Fair included booths that offered services such as free scoliosis screenings for children, vision
screenings, and financial management information. Appearances by local fire and police departments
gave children a chance to tour a fire truck, meet the local K-9 dog and most
importantly learn ways to stay safe in emergencies.
Kids’ choice cooK-oFF
Thanks to the generosity of nine local
eateries, each offering free samples of
kid-friendly food, kids got the chance
to exercise their right to vote for their
favorite restaurant. Cook-Off contestants
included BJ’s Pizza, Corner Bakery,
Hot Dog on a Stick, Jamba Juice, The Lazy
Dog Café, Mimi’s Café, Mrs. Fields Cookies, and
Nonna Lucci’s. This year’s Kids’ Choice Restaurant
of the Year was Hot Dog
on a Stick.
live entertAinment
Performances by ClubHouse Theatre
entertainers and demonstrations by
ClubHouse Academy’s gymnastics, dance,
Karate, and Tae Kwon Do classes were the
day’s headlining acts. Group routines
took place throughout the afternoon as a
backdrop to the indoor health fair allowing
kids a chance to showcase their talents for
friends, family and the community.

Making chiLDhOOD MeMOries
Too many of the Club’s most disadvantaged members have grown-up worries on their
minds. They worry about money—will there be enough for rent or groceries? They worry
about their neighborhoods—is it safe to play outside? At the Club, we aim to give kids a
chance to be kids, take away those worries and instead give them a place where they feel
carefree and can make childhood memories to cherish. These are just a few of the special
ways that the Club gives kids a chance to be kids:
summer cAmP
This year, 40 youth from very low-income families had the opportunity to spend a week at
Pathfinder Ranch, a sleep-away camp bordering the San Bernardino National Forest. For
many kids, this is their very first vacation. At the Ranch, kids spend a fun-filled week trying
out horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, archery, rock climbing and more. Kids come back
from their camp experience full of self-confidence, excited about all the new things they
got to do, and with lots of new friends.
shoe the Kids
Helping kids start the school year with their
best foot forward, the Club partners with the
Surf City Rotary of Huntington Beach and
Payless Shoes to give 100 disadvantaged kids
new shoes. Each child got to choose a new
pair of shoes that was just his or her size and
style to wear to school this fall, making their
selection from all the latest fall fashions.

christmAs PArty
Kids in the Club’s scholarship program are
invited to be part of this special Toys for
Tots celebration, ensuring that every child
has a special holiday to remember. At the
party, kids meet Santa, select presents that
they’ve been dreaming of, sing carols, make
holiday keepsakes, and share a special dinner
together. The looks on their faces let our staff
and volunteers know that this event gives
each child far more than new toys!

theatre
taking center stage
The award-winning ClubHouse Theatre Program gives kids the chance to take center stage and get the
attention they crave in a positive setting. This year 350 children joined one of the program’s three16week
production sessions or special summer camp.
With two beginning and intermediate casts and an advanced cast each rehearsing and performing
three plays per year, the Kingston Branch’s stage is nearly always filled with the sounds of children
reciting lines, singing and dancing. This year’s outstanding productions were High School Musical,
Kilroy Was Here, 101 Dalmatians, Seussical Junior, Don’t Say No to the USO, and Ax of Murder. Due to
families’ interest in theatre opportunities for young children, the Club held a one-week summer theatre
camp workshop for children ages 5-8
to perform a short version of Disney’s
“101 Dalmatians.” The teens in the
advanced cast got creative and took
on a leadership role by designing
and running the Club’s first ever
“Haunted ClubHouse” tour, held on
Halloween night. Demonstrating their
acting skill and talent in this unique
setting, the advanced cast helped
300 Club members celebrate the
spooky holiday by creating their own
characters and costumes and putting their improv skills to the test as
kids took the interactive tour. Club kids experienced a night of fright
and fun all organized and run by a group of their peers.
The kids are getting a reputation for the stellar quality of their
performances and community groups are taking notice. Audiences
are growing and being filled not only with friends and families of the
casts, but also with faces from local senior centers and Girl Scout troupes
looking for good entertainment. Local businesses and foundations
came together to donate more than $75,000 of state of the art sound and
lighting equipment and a professional style stage curtain, greatly enhancing the theatre experience for both members and the audience.
Volunteer director Bob Hoxsie says, “The improvements not only give the kids the feeling of a real live stage, they know that they can now
be heard by everyone in the audience. The theatre no longer looks like a Boys & Girls Club gym, it takes you straight to Broadway.”
The ClubHouse Theatre has truly made a difference in the lives of its participants. According to a recent member survey, 77% feel more
confident since joining ClubHouse Theatre, 38% have become a mentor for a younger child and 55% have found mentors or role models
in older ClubHouse Theatre members, 92% have found a place they feel like they belong, 79% feel special or important when they
perform, and 90% feel their artistic skills are really improving. One child commented, “ClubHouse Theatre lets me do the thing I most
want to do in the world!” We are proud to report results like these and hope we will see you in the audience of a ClubHouse Theatre
performance in 2008!

There are thousands of families in our community who dream of an
affordable place where their kids can learn and play while parents work or
go to school full-time. With your help, the Club is working towards making
those dreams come true by building a new Boys & Girls Club on the campus
of Golden West College. The new location will enable the Club to reach
an additional 2,500 youth per year, with a special focus on disadvantaged
youth from the currently under-served area of northwest Huntington
Beach. In that area, 21% of children are English language learners and 31%
are economically disadvantaged. These disadvantaged youth need the
kinds of services the Club offers, which have been proven to result in increased test scores, fewer behavior problems,
decreased juvenile crime, increased self-esteem and decreased anti-social behavior.

· A state of the art school age facility that will offer low-cost before and after school care.
· A school age playground with playground equipment and outdoor eating areas.
· A gymnasium for basketball and arena soccer with a separate entrance that will adjoin the school-age playground.

The new Club will not only offer children amazing opportunities to participate in developmental preschool
programs and recreation programs and receive much-needed academic support, but the location of the Club
will also provide youth with a unique opportunity to grow up on a college campus. It is our hope that this
will open children’s eyes to the possibility of a college education and a brighter future. 57% of parents in the
neighborhoods this new Club will target are not college graduates. The Club and Golden West College believe
this statistic can change in the next generation. Youth who spend every day on a college campus will begin to
see a college education not as a distant and perhaps impossible dream, but as an attainable goal that the Club
and the academic support it provides can help them achieve. Additionally, parents of young children will have
a high-quality, affordable child care resource that enables them to go back to school.
To date, community members like you have pledged $2 million towards the $6 million needed to make this
dream a reality. The Club is on track to break ground on Phase I of the project, the preschool, in late spring 2008.
We are thrilled with this progress and know that the community’s continued support will be vital in making this
project a success.
