BOUNDARY LINE
We are well underway, with the first few
weeks of season 2012 attracting a great
brand of football and large crowds.
Last month saw the sad passing of Morningside
legend Barry Kelly.
According to many long-time Morningside folk,
without Barry, the Panthers wouldn’t be the
powerhouse they are today. He set the culture of
players playing for the club, not cash – an admirable
attitude that still exists with the ‘Siders. Vale Barry.
Southport icon Dr. Alan “Doc” Mackenzie has been
named by the AFL as the 2012 Jack Titus award
recipient, for his outstanding service to the Southport
Football Club.
Under Alan’s guidance Southport has played in 29
grand finals. Could they make it 30 in 2012?
Congratulations on this tremendous feat Doc, from
everyone at AFL Queensland.
April sees the launch of the NEAFL iPhone application
which, for the first time, will allow NEAFL supporters
to access live scores as well as current news, stats,
fixtures, ladders and more.
It will also bring the NEAFL to a wider national
audience, enabling users to access information from
anywhere in Australia.
A new face at Morningside Football Club is Blair
Brownless, who replaces long serving Club
Development Manager Jack Barry.
On field, Blair played several games for Collingwood
in the AFL. A school teacher by trade, he worked
as State Manager of the Active After School Care
program.
After 7 years at the Panthers Jack Barry moves to
AFL Queensland HQ at Yeronga to take up the role of
Coaching and Volunteer Manager.
Also on the move is Ryan Kogelman, who leaves
Labrador FC after 4 years as CDM.
Under his guidance the Tigers almost jagged a
premiership in the memorable game at Coorparoo
against Morningside in 2010.
A big thank you to Ryan, good luck in pursuing your
business interests.
Until next time…
Yours in football,
They’re a close-knit bunch at Labrador!
Tigers Michael Gugliotta, Jack Stokes, Josh
Cavanagh, Tyrone Bean, Owen Uaongo,
Adam Clarke and Chris Talbot all live on
the same street. Labrador’s own “Ramsay
Street” is a 30-second walk from the
ground, so there is no excuse for the boys
ever being late for training.
New Broadbeach recruit Ezra Poyas turned 31 the
day he made his round 1 debut for his new club,
playing a major part in the comeback that saw the
Cats overcome a 49-point deficit late in the third term
to lead by 1 point with a minute to go in the game.
Unfortunately, 33-year-old Tim Notting spoiled the
party by goaling after the siren to deny Ezra the
dream start and birthday victory.
AFL Queensland’s umpiring department has recently
been bolstered by former AFL umpire Cameron Nash
returning to Queensland from Victoria to oversee the
coaching of NEAFL field umpires. Welcome home
Cameron!
State football - revamped
The 2012 AFL state program has been
revamped with all State League football
played on the same day right across the
country.
Part of the new changes includes the terminology.
State football will now be referred to as State League
football. All major leagues across Australia are
represented, therefore reflecting State League Vs
State League.
The NEAFL Northern Conference will take on
the Eastern Conference on Saturday 26th May at
Southport, supported by a curtain raiser between a
State under 21 Queensland & Northern Territory team
The under 21’s game is an extension of the talented
player pathway. Any player from the four States has
the potential to play in this match, irrespective of
them playing or not playing in the NEAFL.
The coach of the senior State League squad is Jason
Cotter, with John Blair coaching the state under 21’s
team. Both are former Grogan medalist’s and have
coached a numbers of teams to premierships.
The under 21’s and Senior squads will be announced
arry kelly
Morningside lost arguably its greatest
administrator and life member with the
recent passing of former President and Life
Member Barry Kelly.
Barry’s legacy at Morningside will never be forgotten
by the inner sanctum. The successful businessman
who ran Downtown Toyota for over 25 years was a
well respected figure in the community.
He joined the Panthers as a major sponsor in 1986
when former Melbourne player Barry Denny made his
coaching debut. Who would have thought 25 years
later that Downtown Toyota still supports the club as
one of the major sponsors.
Barry was always on hand to offer advice to the club
as he worked to establish his Toyota Franchise in
Morningside often employing players.
He quickly became as a respected figure around the
club with his words of wisdom already starting to
influence the culture.
Barry accepted the president’s role in the late 90’s
and brought about making some tough decisions
for the benefit of the club. Player payments would
be trimmed, local talent would be encouraged
and promoted. It was the beginning of a new
era culminating with John Blair returning to
the Panthers in 2002 to lead them to another 4
Premierships in 7 Grand Finals between 2002-2011.
Whilst Barry Kelly never played 1 game for
Morningside, he will go down as one of the clubs
greatest losses. His words of wisdom behind the
scenes have done a lot to keep the football on track,
to ensure cool heads prevail in the time of crises.
He was a Morningside man, but
most of all he was an excellent
person a wonderful family man
and a leader in the community.
The Morningside Football Club bestowed the honour
of joint naming the clubs Best & Fairest in 2007 the
Devery-Kelly Medal after the 1965 premiership coach
Terry Devery and Barry Kelly.
Barry is survived by his wife Pauline, daughters
Monica and Terri-Anne, son Patrick and 5
grand children.
Footy Forensics
off and running
A new chapter in Queensland football
history was launched at a function at the
Pineapple Hotel Woolloongabba on
March 30.
The Queensland Footy Forensics is a new group for
anyone interested in the history of Australian Rules
Football – both in Queensland and nationally.
The group grew out of the former Queensland
Australian Football Historical Society, which was
formed several years ago.
Queensland has a rich football history, which dates
back to the 1870s. At various times since then there
have been thriving local competitions throughout the
state, from Coolangatta to Cairns.
The game’s more recent history is just as interesting,
including the intertwined stories of the Brisbane
Bears, Fitzroy and the Brisbane Lions and the birth
last year of the Gold Coast Suns.
With the continued expansion of the game in
Queensland, members felt it was time to cater for a
growing interest in its history, its present and
its future.
Several functions are planned for this season,
including guest speakers in an informal, yet
informative environment.
For anyone wanting to conduct their own footy
research, for example, it is sometimes hard to know
where to start.
Fortunately, several members of the Forensics are
researching local club histories. With the growth
of the internet and online databases, there are
more research tools available to historians, and the
Forensics plan to run information sessions to pass on
tips and advice to anyone wanting to research their
own club’s history.
More information on the Forensics’ activities is
available from Robert Allen on 0437 280 104 or
rallen3@iinet.net.au
‘The Footy Forensics is for
anyone interested in the
history of our great game
– whether it happened
last season or a hundred
seasons ago.’
