WELCOME
Welcome to South Hackney Sixth (SHS); an exciting new
option for 16-18 year-olds, based at Hackney Community
College. At SHS, you’ll benefit from all the great facilities and
the spacious campus of Hackney Community College, while
enjoying the support and expertise of specialist sixth form
staff. You will also tap into the strong links with businesses
and universities that the College has built up over the years.
We’re really excited about South Hackney Sixth. We've made
sure that you have plenty of courses to choose from,
alongside sports and other extra-curricular activities like no
other school, sixth form or College in the area. We pride
ourselves in listening to what our learners have to say and
acting upon their suggestions. You can study A Levels or
vocational courses (like BTECs, NVQs and Diplomas), or you
can combine them. There are courses at all levels, so there’s
bound to be something that’s right for you.
Our students feel secure and safe, and they succeed here. In
recent years students' A Level and BTEC grades have
improved consistently, and last year we were in the top 5.5%
of the country's colleges for student achievements at this age,
compared to how they had done at school.
Whatever your dreams are, we look forward to helping you
achieve them.
Ian Ashman, Principal
Our dedicated network of tutors and advisers will support you
all the way. Whether it’s with your course work, personal
challenges, your future study or career; our experts are
QUICK
GUIDE
College vs School or Sixth Form Centre
As well as 16-18 year olds, we have adults studying at the College.
Our students love this, as they get to mix with people of different
ages and backgrounds. It also means there’s more choice:
A Levels, vocational and professional courses. Our students
succeed and achieve great things – so we know it works!
Shoreditch Campus
Located in the heart of Hoxton, our Shoreditch campus is a
great place to study. It’s spacious, with well-thought out study
facilities - plus outdoor and indoor social areas to catch up
with friends. This includes a student lounge complete with a
large, flat screen TV. It’s a great place to relax and meet new
people and take part in the many student activities we offer.
Learning Resources Centre
This offers you study spaces in a range of different areas; for
silent, paired or small group work. There are computers for
you to use for coursework and plenty of paper and online
resources that are carefully selected to meet your coursework
needs. The staff in the centre will help you find what you
need. It also has open access IT space – which is ideal if you
don’t have a computer to use at home.
Internet station
If you like to use the internet to relax, this is the place for you.
Located just outside the learning centre, these computers can
be used for activities such as music, games or shopping.
Safety
Students feel safe here. Our security systems really work! Our
Respect Campaign makes sure everyone knows what sort of
behaviour is expected – and our disciplinary procedure makes it
clear what happens if unacceptable behaviour occurs.
Sports facilities
We have a fantastic sports centre called SPACe (Sports and
Performing Arts Centre). You can play football, volleyball,
basketball and badminton all free of charge at certain times
(ask us for a timetable). Plus, there are women-only sauna
sessions to help women feel more comfortable. There’s also a
well-equipped gym – and as a student, you get a discounted
rate. For more information, you can check out our website:
THE 2012 GAMES
ARE NEARLY HERE!
"I’m a 2012 ambassador for Hackney schools, and I was
selected for the 2012 Girls4Gold trials last year. I hope
to be involved in the 2012 London Olympics – if not in
a basketball capacity, maybe an event steward or
other role."
Gabrielle Boateng.
We’re in the Get
Set Network!
We're really proud
to have been
accredited as a
member of the
London 2012 Get
Set Network,
which recognises
schools and
colleges that live
the values of the
Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
The 2012 London Olympic and
Paralympic Games bring really
exciting opportunities to London.
We're dedicated to helping our
students make the most of this
international showcase of
excellence. We’ve created exciting
facilities, courses and activities to
make sure you have every opportunity to take part.
In the last year our students have met - and raced against -
Olympic athletes. They've had the chance to tour the Olympic
Park and shape the Legacy for East London.
Our sports and leisure students take extra qualifications to make
sure they're in the best possible position to get work at the
event. Construction students are getting work on the stadium.
The hospitality industry is booming in the run up to the Games,
and our new state of the art London City Hospitality Centre
makes sure that local people get the skills and qualifications to
make the most of the jobs coming our way.
The world's media will descend on east London before, during
and after the Games. Our media students take part in
2012-themed workshops and competitions and will be prepared
to take advantage of this work and unique experience.
In fact, students have the opportunity to get involved in so much
2012 activity that it would take a whole prospectus to list it!
Business, languages, arts, volunteering.... you name it - we can
prepare you to be right there at the 2012 Games.
Sporting talent – Academies and more!
Our four sports Academies: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket and
Football, (funded by the Big Lottery Fund) give you the chance to
combine professional standard training with academic study. You
can sign up when you enrol on any College course. The
Academies' performance is consistently outstanding, and our
very best sports men and women go on to represent their
country! But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a top performer –
just show a genuine interest in your chosen sport.
You'll also have the chance to play for Lea Valley Football Club.
And, if you’re involved with the Football Academy, you could
represent Tilbury Football Club.
Whatever your ambition, whatever your
talent, Hackney Community College will
support you to play your part in the 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Key/Basic Functional Skills
These are additional qualifications that are really important to
employers and universities. They include communication,
application of number and computer qualifications which you
study alongside your course.
Pre-entry level courses
These practical courses give you valuable life skills. They are
suitable if you have learning difficulties. You will be supported by a
specialist tutor, who’ll give you the extra learning support you need
to get on. Your tutor will meet you when you arrive at College and
escort you to and from every class. You’ll also get additional
support in the classroom. Ask us for our Learning Difficulties and
Disabilities guide for full details. Call 020 7613 9123.
Entry level courses (entry 1, entry 2 and entry 3)
These vocational courses are ideal if you didn’t take many
GCSEs, or if you achieved mainly Es, Fs or Gs at GCSE. They
can also help you if you need to improve your maths and
English. You study in an area that interests you and often blend
work experience with College work. They’re ideal to get you
on the ladder to higher level courses and jobs.
GCSEs
These one-year courses are suitable for you if you have
already achieved some D grades at GCSE and want to improve
your grades. You would normally take a full-time programme of
four GCSE subjects. If most of your grades are at E, F or G,
we’d usually advise you to apply for Entry or Foundation level
courses.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)
NVQs award you for your competence for a particular job.
How well you do the job is what counts, more than general
academic ability. NVQs are available at five levels:
NVQ 1 is equivalent to three or four GCSEs at grades D–G
NVQ 2 is equivalent to four or five GCSEs at grades A–C
NVQ 3 is equivalent to two A Levels
NVQ 4 is equivalent to a Certificate of Higher Education /
some BTECs
NVQ 5 is equivalent to a Diploma of Higher Education or
Foundation Degree
Level 1
These courses are equivalent to GCSEs at grade D-G.
Level 2
These courses are equivalent to GCSEs at grade A-C
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are valuable courses, funded by the
Government – designed especially for young people. Most last
for one year. You’ll be employed four days a week and attend
Hackney Community College one day per week. These
programmes include a Technical Certificate, an NVQ and Key
Skills. You will also get a literacy and numeracy qualification at
BTEC Firsts
These vocational courses are recognised by employers as an
appropriate level to start work. You gain a broad understanding
of your chosen subject. Assessment is continuous with an
exam at the end.
BTEC National Award
This is a six unit vocational course, which is equivalent to one
A Level. You would need to study other courses as well to go
on to Higher Education or university – or you could get a job in
your chosen subject.
Level 3
These courses are equivalent to A Levels.
BTEC National Certificate
This is a 12 unit course, similar to the Diploma but it’s
equivalent to two A Levels, with a more vocational slant than
A Levels. You can go on to Higher Education or work. You
might combine this with an AS or A Level to make up a
full-time programme.
BTEC National Diploma
This is an 18 unit course, which is equivalent to three A
Levels. You can go straight on to Higher Education, which will
give you a thorough grounding for your chosen career.
A Levels
Split into two parts: AS and A2 Level. AS Level is the first year
of the course where you’ll get an introduction to the key ideas
and methods of the subject you’ve chosen. You’ll be
encouraged to take four AS Level subjects and would then
normally go on to take three of them at A2 Level. Or, you can
mix and match AS Levels with a vocational course.
HOW
TO APPLY
To guarantee a place on the course you want,
you need to apply as soon as possible. But
don’t worry, you’re not committed at this
stage; you can change your mind about which
course you do later on.
Step 1
Once you’ve decided which course you’d like to study, post or
hand in your completed application form to the Admissions
team. The application form is in the middle of this guide and
the address to return the form to is printed on it.
Step 2
We’ll invite you to an interview and/or assessment. It’s a
great time to talk to your tutor to make sure it’s the right
course for you. You may need to do an online or written
initial assessment. Don’t worry! It’s just to get an idea of
what level you’re at so we can make sure you join the right
course.
Step 3
We’ll write to you to let you know if you’ve been
successfully accepted onto your chosen course (this is
based on your assessment and GCSE results). If you
haven’t been successful, we’ll recommend another course
that you can study. You will then be invited back to the
College to complete your enrolment and get your ID card.
We’ll also tell you about EMA and any other benefits you
can apply for and let you know when your first lesson is.
Once you have completed your application,
if you have an admissions query,
please contact 020 7613 9116/9156/9492.
RESPECT
If you’re going to succeed, you need to take
College seriously.
• You must attend 100% of your timetabled lessons
including tutorials and key skills.
• You must be punctual; that means if your lesson starts
at 9am – you need to be in your class, with your
books, notes, pens and materials ready before 9am.
• Your behaviour should be respectful and civilised at all
times. You’ll be given a student diary during induction
which clearly marks out what behaviour is expected
from you. In return, you’ll get respect from all
College staff.
• You must complete all your homework and
assignments properly and on time. Expect to spend
5–10 hours on homework each week, so organise your
time so you can do this.
• Use your Individual Learning Plan to improve your
grades. This process will help you to become
independent and to be aware of your strengths and
areas you need to develop.
• Book your holidays outside of term time.
• Revise and prepare for your exams and final course
submissions.
