“Shwiqhiq Pi mun” (Frog and Moon) found its place at
Clatsop Community College – the upper entry in Columbia
Hall. The Chinook Power Board first came to Clatsop
Community College as part of the Pacific Rim Art Exhibit:
Emergence from Place–Neo-Traditional Indigenous Art
held in 2012 at the College’s Art Center Gallery.
Frog and Moon is a panel hand carved from red and
yellow cedar. The artist is Greg Robinson, a Chinook
Tribal Member. It is modeled after traditional panels
that leaned against longhouses as a gesture of welcoming,
an expression of family identity and spiritual protection.
Acquisition of this important work was made possible by
generous faculty, staff, and community donations.
Message from the President
As the region’s only public postsecondary educational
institution, Clatsop Community College embraces a
mission that is both expansive and diverse.
Still, at CCC it boils down to creating the conditions for
success for our students. And that requires being studentcentered,
or as I prefer calling it being student-centric.
Being student-centric at CCC means having an
unshakeable focus on student learning; students are our
business. It means having clearly defined pathways to
student success. It also means data-informed decisionmaking
and having an improvement-oriented ethos
throughout our campuses. It also requires a community
that supports and engages with the College to
continuously improve the programs and services offered.
Here are just a few examples of success achieved this past year.
Rachel Fackler’s dream of becoming an art teacher is definitely
within reach. Rachel credits a considerable part of her success to the
guidance and support she received from her advisors in the Talent
Search and Upward Bound programs during her middle school and
high school years. She earned an Associate of Arts, Oregon Transfer
degree (AAOT) in June and will enroll at Portland State University
in the fall where she plans to be an art major and earn a minor in
secondary education. After graduating from college Rachel looks
forward to working or studying in New York for a year.
Jennifer Challis was named to the All-Oregon Academic Team in
2013. She started attending CCC when she was 16, and earned
her first Associate’s degree at 18, graduating with High Honors. She
just completed a second Associate’s degree with the intention of
transferring to a technical school and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in
engineering with a focus in renewable energy.
Thomas Stewart is an USCG Active
Duty Veteran who participated in
search and rescue missions and
law enforcement operation on the
Columbia River Bar. He was also named
to the All-Oregon Academic Team this
year. Following active duty, Thomas
began his college education at CCC
pursuing an Associate of General
Studies degree in order to begin a career in allied health. He
received this degree in June and will start in the CCC Nursing
program this fall.
In the pages that follow, Clatsop Community College proudly
shares with you just a sampling of some of the noteworthy student,
community and institutional successes of the 2012-2013 academic
year.
On behalf of everyone at Clatsop Community College, I wish to
express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the support of
the citizens and businesses that help sustain our mission of creating
opportunities for the people of this unique and dynamic region.
I hope that you find our Report to the Community both informative
and engaging.
See you on campus!
Expanding Programs Build Student Success
Unique Designation for CCC Maritime Training Program
Clatsop Community College’s Maritime Science Program received approval
from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) as an approved Training Ship
Program that allows those successfully completing the course of study
to be credited with 360 days of sea service, training and testing towards
an endorsement as Able Seaman Special (AB-Special) or Operator of
Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) upon Near Coastal or Inland Waters.
With this approval, CCC joins an elite group of USCG-approved Training Ship
Programs, and is the only community college in the nation authorized to
provide 360 days of sea service credit toward the AB-Special endorsement.
Completing the Associate of Applied Science (AAS)/Vessel Operations degree
with the addition of two courses will allow issuance of this critical level of
training credential. Both the AB-Special and the OUPV endorsement lead to
greater job opportunities and higher earning potential.
State Grant Launches Welding Program Expansion
Expansion of the CCC Welding and Fabrication Program received
the green light from the State of Oregon with completion of a
$9.6-million sale of state lottery bonds to fund career and technical,
or STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs at all
seventeen community colleges.
Clatsop Community College will receive $281,785 toward its welding
and fabrication program expansion project that will provide new
equipment and upgraded facilities. These funds will enable CCC to
develop a Welding Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree that
connects to the American Welding Society Level II Advanced Welder
designation. The Advanced training will incorporate pipe welding and
various fabrication techniques to build upon the skills already gained in the Entry-Level curriculum. Program
and equipment additions will include state-of-the-art virtual welding simulation; pipe welding, beveling and
bending equipment; additional student work space; new welding booths; and upgrades to the welding shop
ventilation system. CCC will provide an additional $25,000 in locally-raised funds to complete the project.
College Continues Commitment to Arts and Culture through Wide-ranging Activities
The College’s long-standing Arts & Ideas series yielded another year of vigorous programming through the
cooperative activities of CCC faculty and staff in collaboration with community arts organizations including
the Astoria Music Festival, North Coast Chorale, North Coast Printmakers’ Collective, North Coast Symphonic
Band, North Oregon Coast Symphony and KMUN Troll Radio.
An exciting partnership was developed with the Ft. George Brewery & Public House. Ales & Ideas, a new CCC
lecture series, presented seven inspiring and informative free public programs including:
• Autism in Wonderland: How Asperger’s Syndrome Influenced Lewis Carroll’s Writing with Julie Brown
• Word Play: An Evening of Performance Poetry with Nancy Cook and Dave Densmore
• Calendrics: The Mathematics of Calendars with Richard Beveridge
• Brain Rewiring for Dummies: How to Change Your Cognitive Competency with Marian Derlet
• Creativity: The Mystery of the Muse with Kristin Shauck
• Historic Preservation: The Original Sustainable Building Technique with Lucien Swerdloff and John Goodenberger
• The Columbia River Estuary: Natural & Human Changes in the Past 150 Years with Jon Graves
CCC Foundation
The Clatsop Community College Foundation was established in 1960 as an independent, nonprofit, communitybased
organization with the purpose of creating resources to support higher education within Clatsop County.
The CCC Foundation is managed by a volunteer board of directors charged with generating funds, maximizing
investment opportunities, and expanding resources.
Repeat Success - 2013 Arts & Experience Dinner & Auction
The 2013 Arts & Experience Dinner and Auction returned to the Astoria Golf & Country Club for another exciting
evening. Almost $90,000 was generated to support the students and programs of CCC. A successful Special
Appeal held during the event will allow the CCC Foundation to fund four priority projects of CCC:
• Completion of a Learning Commons in the CCC Dora Badollet Library
• Installation of communication monitors at all three CCC campuses
• Acquisition of critical equipment to enhance the EMT training program
• Continuing repair of the historic Estey organ at the CCC Performing Arts Center
The Foundation expresses its deep appreciation to the event’s signature sponsor - Pacific Power; to its Presenting
Sponsor – Oregon Health & Science University; and to its additional Supporting, Partner and Friend sponsors as well
as all who attended.
Local Organizations Join Forces to Sustain CCC Nursing Program
Clatsop Community College’s successful nursing program was the beneficiary of three generous gifts to support
its continued operation and success during the 2012-2013 academic year. “We’re gratified by the tremendous
response for our nursing program,” says CCC President Lawrence Galizio. “The CCC nursing program enjoys one of
Oregon’s highest success rates. Its graduates serve our region in a wide variety of healthcare settings.”
Major sustaining donations were received from Columbia Memorial Hospital and Providence Health & Services. In
addition, the Clatsop Community College Foundation committed $20,000 to this important training program.
Foundation Grants Help Sustain Local Arts
The Foundation continued its relationship as fiscal agent with a consortium of local arts and cultural organizations
known as Partners for the PAC. In addition to supporting ongoing fundraising activities by the Partners, the
Foundation served as applicant for a technical assistance grant from the Ford Family Foundation.
Local Scholarships Help Bridge the Funding Gap
The CCC Foundation holds numerous endowed and temporarily restricted scholarship funds to benefit Clatsop
students. The Foundation also serves as a vehicle for other community groups to support CCC students. With
reductions in federal financial aid and rising tuition, local scholarships are increasingly important for student
success and completion. During the past year, scholarships totaling more than $69,000 were awarded from the
following funds held by the Foundation:
