A Message from the Integrated
President and CEO
Alexandra Hospital and Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital
We hope you will
find this edition of
Report to the Community
to be both informative
and enlightening as
we describe some of
the initiatives currently
underway at Tillsonburg
District Memorial
Hospital (TDMH), as well
as a few of our recent
accomplishments.
The objective of the Oxford Hospitals’ Joint
Services Planning process is to ensure that
residents of Oxford County continue to have
access to quality health services as close to home
as possible. The Phase 1 review of Surgical
Services, Pharmacy and Alternative Level of Care
is complete, and Phase 2 will focus on developing
models for collaborative service delivery across
Oxford County for Laboratory, Mental Health
and Addiction Services, Stroke Prevention and
Management, as well as Paediatric and Children’s
Health. TDMH is very excited to be part of this
initiative, in conjunction with its Oxford hospital
partners.
In September the hospital had two Accreditation
Canada surveyors conduct an intensive review
of documentation as well as on-site interviews
with team members, board members, physicians,
patients and community partners. I am pleased to
announce that we met or exceeded 97.8 percent
of the 1,550 standards associated with quality,
safety and performance. I would like to recognize
and extend congratulations to the entire TDMH
team for a job exceptionally well done! We are
awaiting the final report from Accreditation
Canada.
An important element in an organization’s
success is a strategic plan that clearly defines
the organization’s purpose and direction.
TDMH recently completed a fulsome review
of our mission, vision and values using a new
Accountability Framework. The result is our new
action-oriented Strategic Plan 2013–2016.
With today’s healthcare funding challenges,
financial and resource management are always at
the forefront for TDMH, and this issue includes a
financial snapshot as well as patient care statistics
that you might find interesting.
Plans are underway for our fourth annual Angels
of Giving appeal, and I would like to extend my
heartfelt thank you to the TDMH Foundation and
the community for your ongoing support for new
and replacement equipment.
In closing, my first year at TDMH (a year already!)
has been very exciting. I would like to extend
a thank you to the Board of Directors, team
members, physicians, volunteers and community
partners for their support over the past year, as
well as for their dedication and commitment to
our patients and our hospital.
Memorial Tributes
In Honour of Dr. Elmer Quintyn
(1923-2013)
During his more than 30-year career as an accomplished general surgeon
as well as his tenure as Chief of Staff and member of the TDMH Board of
Directors, Dr. Elmer Quintyn was instrumental in the development and
expansion of the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. His commitment
and dedication to his patients and the hospital will have a long-lasting
impact on the provision of healthcare for the residents of Tillsonburg and the
surrounding area.
In Honour of James (Jim) Stanley Spencer
(1938-2013)
During his 23-year tenure (1977-2000) as President and Chief Executive
Officer at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, Jim provided exemplary
leadership and thoughtful vision to ensure the continued viability of the
hospital. His leadership philosophy was one of collaboration and team work
with a focus on the delivery of compassionate, quality patient care. He led
by example, empowered his team and played a vital role during the hospital’s
expansion in the early 1980s.
Angels of Giving 2013
A SOUND INVESTMENT
– A New Ultrasound Machine
The 2013 Angels of Giving campaign A SOUND
INVESTMENT will raise funds for the replacement
of our oldest ultrasound machine. We are currently
managing in excess of 1,200 ultrasound exams
each month, which is an annual volume of over
14,000 exams. This is a 25 percent increase
from the prior year. Replacing the machine will
complete the updating of our fleet of three
machines. The new machine will continue our
ability to scan routine procedures with the
added feature of 3 and 4D imaging. The new
machine will also produce images with improved
clarity and allow the technologists to scan more
technically difficult patients and produce higher
quality images for the radiologist. The ultrasound
machines are more ergonomic and help to avoid
technologist injury and lost time at work.
As Head of diagnostic imaging Lorelei Thompson
says, “The new machine will allow us to offer all
Tillsonburg and area patients superior imaging
with increased detail, using the newest technology
and allowing ease of scanning for both the patient
and the technologist.“
CEO Crystal Houze comments, “Investing in new
technology will allow TDMH to keep high quality
healthcare close to home. The new ultrasound
equipment will ensure that patient care continues
to be a top priority at our local community
hospital.“
The cost of the new equipment when fully
installed will be approximately $165,000.
HUGO
Healthcare Under Going Optimization
The HUGO project is quickly progressing
toward full implementation at TDMH. With the
installation of the computer-controlled drug
cabinets (as seen in the picture), the project is
on time and on budget. Pharmacy Manager
Brian Fathers and the implementation team are
extremely pleased with the project.
TDMH Foundation directors recently had the
opportunity to view the operation of one of
the drug cabinets. The visit further confirmed
the Board decision to fund the $1.3 million
project. “This is an awesome upgrade to the
technology at TDMH with the provision of
enhanced patient safety,” said Devona Allin,
TDMH Foundation chair.
Jerry D’Hondt and his family are pleased to contribute to the TDMH
Foundation. Jerry is involved in the ongoing collection of used batteries
and scrap metal from both the hospital and the community, The
proceeds of this collection have been donated to the Foundation.
6 TDMH Fall Report 2013
A Financial Snapshot
All Ontario hospitals are required to balance their budgets in an environment of increasing costs and
shifts in funding to community providers. Unfortunately the current economic climate has not allowed
government funding to keep pace with inflationary operating costs for Ontario hospitals.
Over the past several years, TDMH has faced significant financial challenges. We continue to
extensively review our processes, including benchmarking exercises, and will continue to implement
cost-saving strategies to become as efficient as possible while not compromising quality patient care.
Thank You from a Grateful Patient
July 31 was the date for my scheduled colonoscopy procedure. The
preparation the previous day along with my nervousness of hospitals did
not have me in a very good mood! But from the time the first nurse took
me in to check my medical stats and the other team of nurses prepared
me, I felt nothing but sincere caring and a professional atmosphere. A
very nice young lady, Dr. Crosby, appeared and explained everything that
was about to be done. Immediately after waking up, Dr. Crosby returned
and explained her results. To Dr. Crosby and her staff of nurses and the
anaesthetist, I thank you and commend you for making me so reassured
and comfortable.
