A
s you search for the school that matches
your family ask questions and seek clear
answers so that you will fully understand
the nature of our School and its programs. I invite
you to discover all that is LCC.
Our philosophy of “students first” is the lense
through which we test all new initiatives, spending
and program development. Measuring all that we
do against the best interest of our students has
required us to implement some significant changes
in recent years in an effort to continuously improve.
A message
from the
heAdmAster
We are committed to being flexible and adaptable
to integrate the best methodologies into our
programs for the maximum benefit of our students.
For over fifteen years, we have proudly worn
the mantle of being a coeducational learning
environment. During that time we have become
a better school. We are more diverse and richer
for the experiences that coed learning brings to
the classroom and co-curricular life. It positively
impacts the breadth of friendships and the personal
development of every LCC student. The coed
advantage offers sensitivity, insight and confidence,
that our students take with them into post-secondary
learning and career choices, which will also likely
be coed in nature.
We are fortunate that our School has a rich history
that spans over more than a century. During that
time we have learned that the best way to teach
and have impact on young people is to address
the whole person through the mind, body and heart.
It is through programs that affect and inspire the
whole person that learning becomes truly dynamic,
engaging and life-changing.
All LCC programs are deeply rooted in a
commitment to bilingualism and active service to
school and community. In recent years we have
also made our mark as a school with an exemplary
commitment to global awareness through active
learning – leadership conferences, international
exchanges and service projects.
I am very proud of our School. It is a dynamic
learning community where involvement, and a
genuine desire to reach new heights are guiding
principles. During your time with us you will sense
the genuine spirit of engagement that makes LCC
a very special community of learners. I look forward
to meeting you along the way!
Each child is his/her own unique person, and families
have their own aspirations when considering the
educational experience. Finding a school that best
suits you and your child is essential to a happy
and successful experience for the entire family.
We feel the same way about the educational
experience.
At LCC we aim to educate the child in mind, body
and heart, and as such, admission considerations
at our School extend beyond test results. We want
to know the whole child. We seek diverse students
who demonstrate potential, excitement for learning
and commitment. When we invite a student to join
our School, we believe that it will be a mutually
beneficial experience. We want the child to grow
beyond his/her imagination and expect that his/her
involvement in our community will strengthen
school culture.
The purpose of this booklet is to provide you with
the information that you require as you make an
application to our School. This document does not
attempt to provide an overview of the school or its
co-curricular programmes. Instead, it complements
our website and provides the information required
to complete an LCC application.
We hope that you find the enclosed information
useful. Should you have further questions, you are
always welcome to contact the LCC Admission
Office or visit our website at www.lcc.ca.
At LCC
8 n LCC Admission Guide
At Lower Canada College we believe enrolment
in our School should not be limited to families
who are able to pay full tuition. Our financial award
programs have been established to support
students who deserve an LCC education. The
programs are considered grants applied toward
tuition fees. They are not loans.
We are pleased to offer two separate financial
award programs:
n Bursary awards are provided to students entering
grades 7 – 12 who have been admitted to the
school and have demonstrated financial need.
n Our scholarship program, which is a meritbased
system, includes a variety of financial
awards available annually at various grade levels
to new and returning students entering grades
7 – 12. Recipients of these awards are selected
based on the specific criteria of each of the individual
scholarships and not on financial need.
The LCC financial award program represents
a key resource to ensuring a diverse student
population. Last year, LCC granted over $900,000
in scholarships and bursaries to approximately
16% of our students. It’s our goal to provide an
LCC educational experience to as many students
as possible.
bursaries
The LCC Bursary Program represents assistance
available to new or current LCC students in grades
7 – 12 who have demonstrated financial need. This
program is supported by private donors, established
funds within our endowment fund, the LCC Store’s
bursary program, and through the efforts of our
Parents’ Association.
Because personal financial situations vary from
year to year, bursary applications are made on an
annual basis. Consideration of a bursary request
has no relation to the student’s standing in the
School.
LCC is part of a network of schools affiliated with a
private outside organization called Financial Aid for
Canadian Students (FACS). This organization provides
a confidential analysis of a family’s financial
ability to contribute toward the School’s tuition fees.
This information, combined with income tax information
that is submitted directly to the Headmaster’s
Office, is reviewed by the Financial Award Committee.
All bursary requests are considered together in the
early spring and no assistance is awarded in
advance of this time.
To aPPly for a bursary:
1 Applicants must request a Financial Aid
for Canadian Students (FACS) form from the
Admission Office and submit this form directly
to FACS. A copy of the family’s most recent
year’s income tax return is to be submitted
to the Headmaster’s Office.
2 Submit the application as early as possible
directly to FACS. FACS will conduct an analysis
to determine need prior to consideration by the
Financial Award Committee. Deadline: Mid-March.
3 The Financial Award Committee will convene
in the early spring to review all of the bursary
requests and to determine the amount that
will be awarded.
4 Parents are contacted, in writing, with the
amount awarded in the spring. Amounts awarded
depend on need and the funds available.
For further details on how to apply for a bursary,
contact the Admission Office.
sCholarshiPs
LCC is pleased to offer a variety of scholarships to
students entering grades 7 – 12. These awards have
been established through private donations and
by the School to recognize student achievements
in academics, citizenship, leadership, arts and
athletics. The scholarship awards are applied
toward tuition fees.
Competition requirements vary from scholarship
to scholarship. A brief outline of the competition
elements follows. Contact the Admission Office for
further information on how to apply for a scholarship
Registration Fee
A registration fee of $200 will be levied each spring prior to a
new academic year. This amount will be applied to reduce the
June 30th billing of the new academic year.
New Parents Fund
New parents, on acceptance to grades K – 11, are invited to
make a one time per family voluntary contribution of $2,000
to this fund dedicated to the improvement of our facilities.
A donation receipt will be issued.
Rented Textbooks (hard cover)
Rented textbooks (included in Supplementary Fees) not
returned by Founder’s Day will be billed to your child’s
account. No credit note will be issued for books returned after
that date since the replacement books will have been ordered.
Food Service
A charge of $1,165 is included from kindergarten to grade 11
to cover the compulsory lunch and snack service.
Additional tuition for non-Canadians (Secondary School:
Grade 7 – 11 only): Under the regulation of the Ministère de
l’éducation, du loisir et du sport Québec (MELS) regarding
students not born in Canada who are attending a MELS granttaking
school in Quebec, parents must provide proof that the
student is either a Canadian citizen, has his/her permanent
residence in Quebec, or is in the care of someone working
under specific criteria in Quebec. Failure to have such
documented proof means that the School’s grant from
the MELS will be reduced by approximately $3,978 for that
student. The School is authorized by the MELS to assess
the family that charge in addition to the school fees for
that student for each year that the School receives grants
from the MELS. This amount is subject to an annual
increase.
TeChnoloGy fee
Every grade 7–11 student will have the use of a school’s
laptop during the school year as part of the laptop
programme and will be charged $300 for a technology
fee.
Once a school’s laptop is leased-to-purchase, only the
technology fee will be charged in the subsequent years.
exTenDeD-Day ProGraM
Our optional Extended-Day Program offers a safe, fun
after-school alternative for students in K-6. Parents
may pick up their children as late as 6 pm. The annual
fee is approximately $2,160. Part-time participation is
permissible and special arrangements can be made.
Access to English schooling in the province of
Quebec is governed by the provisions of Bills
101 and 103. Simply stated, English schools
receiving grants from the government can only
receive students who have English eligibility
(for further information on English eligibility visit
www.mels.gouv.qc.ca/.
LCC’s elementary school program does not receive
government grants. Therefore, children participating
in the Junior School program (i.e., grades K – 6)
do not require an eligibility certificate to attend the
School. However, because LCC receives partial
government funding for its high school program,
students in the Middle and Senior School programs
(i.e., grades 7 – 11) do require an eligibility certificate
to attend our school.
Eligibility is not a requirement for students applying
to the Pre-University Year program.
When To aPPly?
The LCC Admission Office accepts applications
throughout the year, a maximum of one year prior
to the intended year of entry.
Kindergarten – Grade 11
Although we do accept applications year-round,
there are two primary periods during the school
year when we receive applications and conduct
admission testing. The first admission decisions
are made by the admission committee in early
December. Available spaces will be offered to
qualified candidates and the School will fill all
available spaces should there be sufficient qualified
candidates.
Students applying in the winter period are considered
for admission by early March. It is important to note
that applicants during this second period in the
admission year may be applying for a space in
the wait pool due to full enrolment.
Applications to the School following the second
primary period are considered on a rolling basis
and the Admission Office will make individualized
arrangements for testing, etc.
Grade 7
QAIS schools offer a Common Admission Test
(C.A.T.) for students who apply to several of these
schools. The best time to apply is in the early fall.
