“
Welcome to Issue 7 of 6S. Slightly later
than scheduled, but with so much to
pack in, we’re sure you will feel it’s been
worth the wait!
One of the key areas we are focusing on
in Issue 7 is the Health, Safety and
Environment (HS&E) team. This has now
expanded to 21 people, with the
addition of three new and exciting roles
over the last few months. Richard
Bennett and Louise Whitfield join as
Performance Improvement Manager
and Performance Analyst respectively
whilst Jane Confrey moves into a new
role as Strategy Integration Manager.
These developments demonstrate our
focus on HS&E performance as a
business, and our ongoing
commitment to continuous
improvement in terms of HS&E. This is
illustrated by the formal launch of our
Drug & Alcohol screening programme,
which trialled in Scotland and is being
rolled out throughout the UK. As a
responsible employer it is vital that we
continue to evolve and develop our
existing D&A policy, to ensure that risk
is minimised for our employees, our
supply chain and any others who might
be affected. We are on track to deliver a
three year plan of strategic initiatives
with year three being Drugs & Alcohol
and Manual Handling.
On a lighter note we were pleased to
support one of our largest clients,
Southern Water, by getting involved in
their Health and Safety in
Construction Supply Chain
Conference back in May. This gave us
an opportunity to share ideas and
collaborate on best practice, and to
understand more about Southern
Water’s ongoing HS&E strategy. Find
I SECURE I
Formal Recognition
for the Ambassador
Training Programme
We’re pleased to confirm that Clancy Docwra’s Ambassador
Training Programme has been formally recognised by the
Institute of Customer Service.
In May of this year Seamus Keogh, Colin Waugh and Robin
Rowland of Clancy Docwra were presented with a plaque by
Bob Winnington of the Institute of Customer Service,
confirming that we have gained TrainingMark Accreditation.
This is a national accreditation of an organisation’s internal
customer service training programme.
Commenting on the accreditation, Clancy Docwra’s Training
Co-ordinator Tessa Howard said, “We are delighted to receive this
formal recognition of the quality of our Customer Service training
from such a well-recognised establishment. Well done to everyone
involved, who helped to make this achievement possible.”
Enhancing the Customer Care Team
Clancy Docwra has recently relocated the role of the Customer
Liaison Officers to our offices in Chatham, Kent. These positions
were previously located in Southern Water’s head office in
Durrington and were created in order to support the Southern
Water contract, to ensure closer customer working and an even
higher level of efficiency and communication.
Samantha Parker and Lynsey Knight have both worked for us
for a number of years, but have been newly appointed to
these vital roles. Their chief responsibility is to act as liaison
between Southern Water and Clancy Docwra’s operational
teams. Any enquiries or complaints (or indeed compliments!)
which are received by Southern Water are passed to Sam and
Lynsey. It is then their role to gather the details and necessary
answers, either by checking the systems or ringing the
appropriate Clancy team.
Once this has been done, Sam and Lynsey are then
responsible for contacting the customer directly and
updating them on the situation, or supplying the details back
to Southern Water if requested. They then update Southern
Water’s customer information systems to reflect the response
and the action taken.
The Customer Liaison Officer role is vital in helping us to
achieve excellent customer service and we have already seen
positive results from Sam and Lynsey’s work, which have
been reflected in the SIM qualitative scoring on the Southern
Water contract.
I SUCCESSFUL I
Racing Against Time for the Olympics
Clancy Docwra is
extremely pleased to
have recently secured
a contract worth in
excess of £3.5m with
UK Power Networks.
This is for civil engineering works that
are being carried out in its West Ham
depot and the Millennium Tunnel, as
well as the O2 Arena site which is at the
other end of the tunnel.
The West Ham Grid is one of UK Power
Networks’ key substations, as it
provides power to Canary Wharf,
Central London and now also the
Olympic Village. Due to the high profile
nature of the site, the Government has
identified it as a critical location in
which to have both flood and security
defences increased.
Contract Overview
The project incorporates flood defence
works and security fencing at the West
Ham Grid, along with Ventilation Works
for the Millennium Tunnel and
enabling for the 132kV installation into
the tunnel.
There are critical milestones for the
completion of various project elements,
which were June for the perimeter
concrete flood defence wall and July for
the security fencing on top. This is to
comply with the strict Olympic embargo
dates, which prevent any construction
works going on in and around the
vicinity during the Olympic Games.
Project Objectives
The objectives of this project are to
ensure that the assets at the West Ham
site on Bidder Street are protected from
the ‘1 in 100 year’ possibility of a flood,
which would result from the failure of
the Thames flood defence measures.
If this happened, there would typically
be a 72 hour warning. In that time, the
site and all critical assets would need to
be protected and the continuing
operational capability of the site would
also have to be maintained. The design
is therefore being progressed based on
this assumption. A second objective of
this project is to ensure that the site is
protected in the event of an attempted
security threat both from attack by
vehicles and by individuals.
In addition, ventilation will be installed
into the Millennium Tunnel, where the
tunnel shaft is contained within the
West Ham Grid, and an enabling cable
route is also required from the 132kV
switch room to the shaft of the tunnel,
to facilitate the installation of the
132kV cable.
The Works in Detail
Replacement of existing site
perimeter fencing with new flood
defence and security fencing - a
mixture of in-situ concrete footings
and low walling with weld-mesh
fencing on top
Rebuilding works to the existing
access gatehouse and security
arrangements
Localised fencing to specific onsite
assets
An upgrade to the existing
electronic security systems - i.e.
CCTV and access control
Alterations to the existing
drainage services to improve
flood defence characteristics
Break out and enhancement of
the existing tunnel shaft at West
Ham, to enable a ventilation
system to be installed
Break out and enhancement of
the existing tunnel shaft at the
O2 Arena site, to enable an air
intake system to be installed
Installation of the M&E ventilation
system at each end of the tunnel
length - West Ham and O2 Arena
sites
Provision of cable trough routing
below ground for future 132kV
cable installation at the West
Ham depot
An element of detailed design
related to performance
specifications for the electronic
security works
The Sarco Stopper Hydrant Wizard
This new solution from Sarco Stopper enables us
to remove and replace an existing fire hydrant
without disrupting the main supply, by creating a
‘bypass’ around the hydrant. We recently
demonstrated the solution to Southern Water by
carrying out a live exchange of a high risk
category fire hydrant at a location in Gravesend,
which was completed with no disruption at all.
After the successful completion of this
demonstration, the Hydrant Wizard has now
been approved for use by both Clancy Docwra
and Southern Water.
Ferret Leakage Detection goes live!
After the announcement of this new product in
the last issue of 6S, we can now confirm that The
Ferret has been purchased and is available for
hire from Clancy Plant. It is already being
successfully used on the Southern Water contract
and is about to be trialled on the Scottish Water
Repair and Maintenance contract.
Echo Barrier
We have recently trialled a new noise reduction
solution called Echo Barrier, which is a high tech
acoustic screen that can be placed around road
works to reduce noise pollution. The trial, which
took place in Chatham High Street in Kent, was
part of the Southern Water contract and involved
a new mains connection for a recently
constructed shop unit with a flat above.
The trial took place in response to a new remit
coming out from Chatham Council, which is looking
to lower noise levels in high MOP (members of
public) areas. We had good feedback from the
general public and the bank staff, as both noise and
dust were kept to a lower than normal level.
Building Bridges - in more ways than one!
Clancy Docwra was recently invited to get
involved with a Business and School Partnership
initiative launched by Brunel University, in
association with Alperton Community School.
Titled ‘Building Bridges’ this initiative saw
students from the school designing and building
a bridge as part of their curriculum studies. Two
of our staff from the Graduate engineer
programme - Eoin Toher and Bryan O’Donavan -
were invited to judge the winning entries, as part
of a judging panel which also included Brunel
University and British Airways.
We’re also pleased to announce that Clancy
Docwra has now been invited to put a
representative on the Brunel University Civil
Engineering Industrial Advisory Board.
I SYSTEMS I
Working in Partnership with Scottish Water
April 2nd
2012 was a
momentous
day for Clancy
Docwra, as we
commenced
work on the
R&M Alliance
Framework
Contract with
Scottish Water
- awarded
after a
complex and
robust OJEU
tender
process which
has been in
progress for
over 12
months.
This achievement is an especially
exciting development for us. It is the
largest framework contract that Clancy
Docwra has undertaken in Scotland and
is also the only clean water
infrastructure contract in the region.
Winning the Contract
The process started in early 2011, with
over 35 different prospective
companies making an ‘expression of
interest’. Scottish Water carried out an
initial selection and reduced this to
approximately 15 companies, all of
whom were invited to the next stage of
the process. Each of these companies
presented to Scottish Water to explain
more about their business and to
demonstrate how they saw the Alliance
partnership working.
After this stage, in June 2011, four
companies were invited to formally
tender the contract. Clancy Docwra’s
bid was submitted in August and we
were advised in November that we had
been selected as a Preferred Bidder.
Normally a client would select two
companies at this stage - but due to the
strength of our bid, Scottish Water
decided to choose Clancy Docwra as
the only Preferred Bidder. However, a
full process of due diligence still needed
to take place, including visits to both
our Southern and Scottish offices and
visits to two reference sites - in this
instance Southern Water and Sutton
and East Surrey Water.
Happily everything went to plan, and a
10 year clean water Repair &
Maintenance contract was awarded,
consisting of five years plus a further
five years with an annual break clause.
This will involve direct labour as well as
working with a small number of key sub
alliance partners, and covers the
following elements:
Planned leakage repairs
Reactive leakage repairs
Customer connections
Metering
Ironworks
Small value capital delivery
Efficient Mobilisation
We started the process of mobilisation
back in January when we were still at
Preferred Bidder stage, to ensure that
everything would be in place as soon
as the contract was formally signed.
The mobilisation process was simple
and seamless thanks to the detailed
nature of the bid, as all of the planning
work had in effect already been done.
Having developed the process over
the 12 months of the tender stage, in
collaboration with key stakeholders
across Scotland, we had a very well
laid out plan in place, making
everything far easier to implement
when the time came.
A key part of the mobilisation process
was the implementation of Mobile-i,
Clancy Docwra’s innovative mobile
workforce management system. This
enables the intelligent streamlining of
operational processes and gives total
flexibility when managing
maintenance and repair programmes
in the utility sector. Whist up and
running in the south, Mobile-i had not
been implemented in Scotland and so
this was rolled out as a critical part of
the mobilisation activity.
I SYSTEMS I
partner is to help them to maintain and develop their
relationship with their customers. As such, a key part of Clancy
Docwra’s role as Delivery Partner is to understand the
importance of the OPA and to ensure that customer
satisfaction is as high as it can be.
Works begin on the R&M Alliance Contract
A Different Approach
An Alliance Framework Contract such as this one is quite a
different contracting concept. Rather than a more traditional
‘employer and contractor’ relationship, it’s very much about
working together to achieve common goals within the
framework of a strategic partnership.
Commenting on
the new contract,
Lesley Campbell,
Associate Director
for Clancy Docwra,
said, “We are
thoroughly delighted
to be part of this
relationship after a
very challenging 12
month tender
process. The team
worked extremely Associate Director Lesley Campbell
hard and we are
excited to be working with such a prestigious client.”
Formally announcing the signature of the Water Alliance
Agreement for the Provision of Water Network Repair and
Maintenance Services, Josephine Gallagher from Scottish Water
added, “I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all
stakeholders and general managers for your continued support
throughout this Procurement. Scottish Water is looking forward to
a prosperous collaborative agreement with Clancy Docwra.”
The R&M Alliance Office
Office Manager Vicky Allen, demonstrates Mobile-i
The purpose of an Alliance approach is to develop a
partnering agreement where both parties collaborate on
areas such as intelligent planning, developing innovation and
creating better processes, as well as thinking about
improvements in areas such as Health & Safety and cost
saving initiatives. Scottish Water and Clancy Docwra will work
together as a united team to create a future Alliance model,
where we act as the Strategic Delivery Partner to support our
client as effectively as we possibly can.
Within this partnership arrangement, an essential focus has to
be on the client’s own business drivers. Scottish Water is a
customer-driven organisation, but unlike southern based
utility companies, it is managed by the Government and
publicly funded - making it accountable to the public.
Customer satisfaction is extremely important and so Scottish
Water is subject to what is known as OPA - Overall
Performance Assessment. Therefore, our role as their Alliance
Summer Issue I 7

I SUCCESSFUL I
Expanding the Thames Water Optimise Team
Thames Water has
recently spent £150
million on upgrading
its IT systems, both
internally and for all
of its contractors. The
new system - known
as WAMI (Work Asset
Management
Information) - went
live on the Optimise
Western contract in
February for our
Developer Services
teams and this was
followed in May and
June by our Repair
and Maintenance
teams.
A Totally New Approach
The new system is SAP based, and the
on-site teams now use Toughbooks to
receive their work through a
programme called Click Mobile, which
links into SAP via a scheduling tool
called Click Schedule. This tool includes
an ‘optimiser’ which schedules work for
the teams as efficiently as possible,
taking into account both their skill sets
and the geographical location of
available work. All the Thames Water
engineers (NSTs) also have Toughbooks
to receive work and then send it back
to be passed through to Clancy Docwra
as the contractor.
To support this new approach, over the
last few months we have employed 10
new staff in the Planning and
Compliance teams and one new Planner
in the Developer Services team, after
promoting an existing Planner to Team
Leader. We have also recruited two Field
Systems Co-ordinators who are ‘super
users’ on the Toughbooks, assisting with
training the teams and going out to site
to ensure that people are using the
system correctly. These co-ordinators
also currently work on a standby basis
alongside an Operational Supervisor, in
case of any Toughbook issues when out
of hours work is being completed.
Making the Change
In order to ensure that we were ready
for ‘Go Live’, we had to follow rigorous
training schedules, action plans and
deployment plans, to guarantee the
The WAMI team. Photo: Emily Griffin - Optimise
smoothest transition possible. We are
now positive that these new systems
will improve our efficiency and
productivity levels, whilst also giving us
greater control.
The Repair and Maintenance contract
went live on the new system from 28th
May for back office and from 11th June
for the teams - 35 in total! The main
change for us is that, prior to the new
system, Thames Water’s planning team
planned the work for our teams, whereas
now we are responsible for planning our
own work using the new system. We also
now need to ensure we have office cover
from 6am to 10pm on from Monday to
Friday and from 6am to 2pm at weekends.
Each of the 10 new staff in the planning
and compliance teams have completed
around five days of training on the new
systems, and we have also had a section
of Thames Water’s office renovated and
extended so that all of our staff are able
to work from a single office.
Our Developer Services teams have
experienced a slightly easier change as
they were already doing their own
planning, but they are not used to the
new systems and have not used
Toughbooks before, so there was still a
learning curve involved! Lastly, our
Commercial team has also been
affected by the new systems as they
now have to use these to claim
payment from Thames Water for each
job that is carried out.
6S Survey Results
We recently conducted a survey with regards to the 6S Vision
Limited provides
all Clancy Group
companies with
the most up-todate
and
innovative plant,
vehicles available
in the
marketplace - so
its role within the
business is a
crucial one. As
such we have
decided to start a
regular feature
within 6S which
offers a quarterly
update on the
business.
A Brief Overview
There are seven main divisions within
Clancy Plant and we will be featuring
each of these in turn in future issues of
6S, as well as profiling some of the key
staff involved. These divisions
are as follows:
General Plant
Hire team
Fusion Division
Transport
Traffic Management Division
Reprocessing Division
Body Repair Centre
Through its proactive procurement
strategy, Clancy Plant is able to provide
state of the art equipment which
maximises the benefit of the latest
technologies, particularly in relation to
fuel efficiencies. The company currently
has more than 6,000 items of plant and
equipment which are available to the
rest of the Clancy Group, ranging from
small pumps to state of the art
reprocessing equipment. These are
made available to the business via a
highly experienced and professional
Hire Desk team.
Clancy Plant also has a vast transport
fleet with over fifteen hundred vehicles.
These are solely provided for use within
Clancy Group’s operations and include
beavertails. In addition, the company
also has its own workshops and a
highly skilled and experienced team of
technicians and bodywork specialists,
who use the latest technology for paint
spraying, colour matching and mixing
across all types of vehicles.
Associate Director, Bernie Stack
Developing the Team
As announced in the last issue of 6S,
Bernie Stack recently joined Clancy Plant
as Associate Director after 26 years
being involved in many different areas
of the Clancy business. This has included
roles as Supervisor, Agent, Project
Manager, Contracts Manager and
Regional Manager. As Associate Director
for Clancy Plant Hire Ltd, Bernie now has
responsibility for the day to day
operational activities of the business,
working closely with Mike Revell.
“The move to Clancy Plant allows me to
bring many years of experience as a
‘customer’ with me”, explains Bernie.
“This unique perspective helps me to
understand what Clancy Plant’s
customer base requires, and enables us to
make sure that, as a service provider, we
deliver what the rest of the Group needs.
Part of these developments have
included the introduction of Key
Performance Indicators within Clancy
Plant Hire Ltd and the implementation of
Service Level Agreements with our
customers within the Clancy Group. This
will ensure that the service which Clancy
Plant provides meets the high standards
that are expected of it.”
Launching CAT4
Clancy Plant’s dedicated Fusion
Division supplies specialist
equipment and services to the whole
business and one of the key
technologies it provides is a Cable
Avoidance Tool (CAT) manufactured
by Radio Detection.
CAT4 is the latest version of the tool,
which has recently been introduced
in Scotland with the intention of
rolling this out through the business
over time. CAT 4 replaces CAT3, and
will eventually replace Clancy’s own
customised version of that solution
known as CATs-i. With CAT4, the
manufacturers have incorporated the
developments which CATs-i offered,
as well as adding many other new
features. Fusion Department Manager
Steve Davies explains further:
“The key development with CAT4 is the
addition of data logging capabilities.
This enables users to track when the tool
was used and for how long, as well as
more detailed information such as
whether the operative was holding it
correctly and which detection mode the
tooling was in.”
Rolling Out Tracker Fleet
Clancy Plant implemented Tracker Fleet
reporter unit’s technology in 2011 and
this has now being rolled out across all
of our commercial fleet including certain
items of plant and equipment. Tracker’s
telematics solution, which is also used by
the likes of Northgate Vehicle Hire and
Red Bull Racing, is already becoming an
integral part of the business - as it
provides vital information on areas such
as speeding, idling, driver hours, journey
times and mileage.
The Tracker Fleet solution enables Clancy
Plant and Clancy Docwra to set their
own Key Performance Indicators, which
are viewed via a customised dashboard.
This can deliver information on areas
such as whether vehicles are exceeding
daily allowable mileage, or even
breaking speed limits. All of this enables
Clancy Group to understand the usage
of its hire fleet in more detail, to make
sure that it is operating efficiently and to
look after the wellbeing of all Clancy
Group staff that drive or operate these
vehicles and equipment.
Pictured below is Dermot Clancy
utilising the online system, which has
recently been upgraded. Dermot
comments, “The system upgrade
incorporates advanced Google maps such
as Street View, with a route replay function,
allowing management to understand
exactly where their vehicles currently are
and routes taken to improve efficiency and
response times for our clients, thus
producing an improved service. The group
has invested a substantial financial
amount in the commercial fleet’s
telematics system and we will be
monitoring the usage of the system over
the coming months.”
Ongoing Drug and Alcohol Screening
In the last issue
we outlined
our ongoing
plans for
managing
drug and
alcohol
screening in
our HS&E
Newsdesk
feature.
As part of Phase Two of this activity,
screening in the North is now well under
way - and since testing commenced, 14
employees have tested positive for
drugs. Which is around 4% of all those
screened. Research prior to the
screening programme sugested that the
national average is closer to 10%.
Although a full screening programme
was carried out in Scotland in 2011, all
new employees since November 2011
are now being included in further
testing. The rollout of the Drug and
Alcohol screening programme will now
take place in the Central and East,
South and West, and Scottish regions
between October and December 2012.
Around three months before the
screening takes place, all employees will
be required to attend a presentation
about the initiative. All details about
the screening programme are
explained, and there is also an
opportunity for any questions to be
answered. The risks associated with
being under the influence of drugs or
alcohol whilst at work will be discussed
- and more detail given about the types
of substances being screened for, and
the method of testing.
If anyone tests positive during the
initial screening but denies being
under the influence of the relevant
substance, then a ‘Chain of Custody’
urine test is carried out, which is a
legally defensible test carried out at
approved laboratories. Once all
employees have been screened in their
region, then the programme will
continue in 2012 and 2013 with:
Pre-employment screening during
the induction process
Post safety incident screening to
determine the possible cause
Random selection screening of
employees
‘Just cause’ screening of employees,
if the line manager deems there is
unusual or unsafe behaviour.
I SUSTAINABLE people I
Report on
Climate Week 2012
During w/c 12th March, the Clancy Group took part in
‘Climate Week’ - a national environmental campaign which
raises awareness about things that we can all do to reduce
carbon emissions. As part of Climate Week 2012 we
organised a number of events for people to participate in:
Information Hub - Set up at head office, this provided
advice about climate change evidence, as well as
explaining ways in which we can all save energy.
Vehicle Health Checks - One of our key suppliers, the AA,
was invited in to undertake free ‘health checks’ on staff
members’ private and company vehicles - focusing on
areas that effect fuel efficiency. Area Manager John Cherry
and his team reviewed over 30 staff vehicles.
The ‘Big Switch Off’ Campaign - This got people thinking
about the impact of their workstation on the total office
energy bill, and saw an increase from 30% to 50% of
machines switched off over the week.
Climate Change Opinions Survey - This business-wide
survey was undertaken across more than 300 staff from
both operational and office functions, and gathered many
interesting statistics - such as the fact that 80% of staff think
the business is serious about reducing carbon emissions.
Future Plans
Following Climate Week 2012, the Environment and
Sustainability teams are working with other parts of the
business to focus on targeted areas for reducing business
carbon emissions. These include efficient journey planning,
championing video conferencing and launching a lift
sharing service.
We recognise the impact of our carbon emissions and are
proactive in measuring, monitoring and driving them down.
We have set business-wide targets for reducing emissions
and continue to build bespoke monitoring and reporting, as
well as low carbon design options, into the service we offer to
our clients.
HS&E Team
Developments
We’re delighted to announce three new roles in the
to carry out the day to day
running of the HS&E team
but will now also take
responsibility for
implementation of the HS&E
deliverables which come out
of the Strategic Forum.
Louise Whitfield,
HS&E Performance Analyst
In his role as Performance
Improvement Manager,
initiatives, initially working with
the HS&E senior advisors. He
will then move into working
Jane Confrey,
Strategy Integration Manager
And as Performance Analyst,
Louise will manage and
analyse all relevant HS&E
data which is generated,
enabling Clancy Docwra to
I SKILLED people I
Under the Microscope
For this issue we spent the day with
Contracts Manager Denver Knight,
who is responsible for the Southern
Contract for waste water planned
involves covering an area of more
counties - Kent, Hampshire and
Sussex - excluding the Isle of Wight
of course, which falls under his
brother Steve’s area of responsibility.
Clancy Docwra won the Southern
In keeping with the Sustainable
ago and has worked his way up
through roles such as Pipe Layer,
Team Leader, Supervisor and Area
Manager before becoming Contracts
Manager in 2010. He explains more
about how the contract, and the
team, has developed:
“When we were awarded the contract
in 2009 Gareth King set up the contract
and I was bought in as an Area
Manager to cover the expected planned
work. Initially it was just me and the first
project was to build a pumping station
at Ashford in Kent and at all went from
there in starting to build the team!
Having started from nothing, we now
have a great team - with 12 office staff
and site supervisors plus around 40
working on site, although this varies
depending on workload. The team is
split across each of the workstreams
Sewer Rehabilitation
Project Overview
Key Factors
We inspected 441km of sewers to gauge structural condition and
serviceability performance of the pipe. Surveys are then assessed to
generate planned repair works, thus preventing any potential
incidents which could occur.
Being able to capture as much information as possible is crucial in
determining the condition of a sewer pipe. The more surveys
completed, the better value to the client in terms of focusing on
where repairs are needed.
Laying of 1,327m of 180mm/280mm rising main to replace mains with a
history of bursting, using both open cut and directional drilling installation
techniques plus lining of existing main - including drilling under the River
Adur. All wash out and air valves also replaced and new chambers built,
and we were also instrumental in updating an outdated existing design.
This flood plain is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is part of the
South Downs National Park. We are also crossing a scheduled ancient
Rehabilitation works were therefore required and were carried out to
3km of sewers ranging from 100mm to 1800mm in diameter - using
specialist sewer jetting, trenchless techniques and open cut methods.
This very challenging project was delivered ahead of programme, under
budget and with no customer complaints. It involved the management
and co-ordination of multiple contractors, working both in the highway
and private properties, as well as upfront agreement of traffic
management plans and land access. Constant communication with all
parties - including the local council, client, specialist contractors and local
Project Overview
Key Factors
Trunk Main Replacement
The sewer running behind the
properties of Kingsdown Park was in
extremely poor condition, leading to
multiple flooding incidents. Urgent
rehabilitation works were required to
prevent a possible sewer collapse.
The location of the sewer required us to
work within residents’ properties and gardens, necessitating careful choice
of methodology and equipment used. Communication, consultation and
engagement with property owners and nearby residents was vital to the
successful delivery of the project - and this was achieved by involving all
parties in decisions throughout the planning process.
Location
Contract Value £700,000
Project Length 4 months
Project Manager, Paul Taylor and
Engineer, Robin Parry
Project Overview
Key Factors
Phase 6a of an 18 month project to install
5.2km of sewerage trunk main. This
phase involves laying 1,466m of 630mm
HPPE across fields and along what is
known as the Cuckoo Trail, by open cut
method. The project also involves a very
heavy tankering operation at night,
which needs to be planned with military precision.
This area of outstanding natural beauty is popular with walkers, cyclists
and horse riders so diversions along roads, through fields and
undergrowth have been necessary, sometimes clearing trees and hedges
to make a route possible. Extensive communication with local
stakeholders and creation of appropriate signage has helped to make
this project a success.
that, as a natural development of the
relationship, we have now also started to
carry out design and build work as well.”
By their very nature, waste water
contracts are particularly complex to
manage, as the potential impact when
things go wrong is very high. It’s also
clear from talking to Denver that the
team never knows what challenge it
might face on any given day! Taking
current projects as an example, one day
they could be working with a local
primary school near a construction site,
to run a competition about the dangers
of playing in such areas - then the next
they could be calling in H&S specialists
in white suits and respirators to deal
with the discovery of asbestos during
an excavation.
Clancy Docwra works closely with
Southern Water, not only to ensure that
projects are completed efficiently and to
budget, but also to provide advice
based on knowledge built up over years
of being involved in these types of
schemes. It’s this level of experience
which adds real value to the
relationship, enabling Denver and his
team to more accurately understand the
work required and so plan effectively to
ensure a successful outcome.
“We have an excellent team here,”
concludes Denver, “working together with
our client to deliver the solutions they need,
across a wide range of schemes and an
even wider geographical area. Our aim is to
be helpful and supportive at all times and
we’ve learned that we can deal with most
things that come our way!”
Clancy Docwra Answers a DIY SOS
In the last issue of 6S we highlighted the close working
relationship between Clancy Docwra and Anglian Water, thanks
to the new integrated team model at the Huntingdon office. This
time, we have a more light-hearted story for you - although one
with a very serious benefit for the people concerned.
In mid April, staff at the Huntingdon site noticed a ‘village’ of
Portacabins appearing in a housing estate about half a mile
from the office. Being naturally curious they investigated
further and discovered that one of the houses in the street
was going to be the subject of BBC One’s ‘DIY SOS: The Big
Build’ programme! This is where Nick Knowles and his team
issue a call to arms and recruit friends, family and local trades
to help transform the homes of families across Britain.
Of course, we decided to see if there was anything we could
do to help, and after gaining approval from Anglian Water,
Clancy Docwra’s own Cheryl Chapman - who is a Senior
Customer Care Administrator - set off down the road to talk
to the production team.
Part of the work which Clancy Docwra and Anglian Water do
in the area involves carrying out water efficiency audits and
checking for and fixing leaks - as well as providing a range of
water saving advice, and devices such as tap inserts, shower
saves, dual flush systems, shower timers and hose pipe guns -
when there isn't a ban in place!
Cheryl outlined the help which the team could offer, and
this was met not only with a delighted and positive
response, but also with a request to be interviewed on
camera as part of the programme. Cheryl agreed of course,
and was also invited back for the big ‘Reveal’ at the end of
the programme, which also involved Nick Knowles.
After the event, the production team commented to us that
they were very impressed to be approached - as in all at the
13 years they have been making the programme, which is
now in its 24th series, they have never had a water company
come and ask if they can help before!
Julie Jones, the owner of the house in Stukeley Meadows, hit
the headlines in January when she picked up the Tesco ‘Mum
of the Year’ award after taking in her best friend’s four
orphaned children, despite being a working single parent to
three children already.
Commenting on
the programme in
the local press,
Nick Knowles said,
“The suppliers and
tradesmen in
Huntingdon have
been incredibly
generous. They are
all extraordinary
people who do an
amazing job – we
just bring a ball of
Cheryl Chapman with Nick Knowles and
some of the DIY SOS team
momentum to the area. This job is being done by local businesses
for a local family.”
Julie added, “It’s awesome! I want to send lots and lots of love
and thanks to everybody involved. I would like to say thank you
to the BBC, The Hunts Post and all the local tradesmen.”
Clancy Docwra Wins Anglian Water
Supplier of the Year Award
We're delighted to announce that on 4th July Clancy
Docwra and May Gurney were named Supplier of the Year
for their work on the Anglian Water Metering contract,
which is jointly delivered by Clancy Docwra, May Gurney
and Anglian Water. The presentation took place at Anglian
Water’s ‘We Love What You Do’ Awards – which are held
annually to recognise the efforts of Anglian Water’s
employees and suppliers over the past 12 months.
In presenting the award, Chris Newsome, Anglian Water’s
Director of Asset Management highlighted the fact that in
delivering the Metering programme the traditional model
of client vs contractor had been successfully broken down
as the three organisations involved had developed to
become a single process led delivery team.
Recognition was also given to achieving 100% levels of
service during the year and successfully delivering all
programme mandates.
Congratulations to the whole team on
this fantastic achievement!
Darren Jones and Ricky Crouch are
were nominated for the award after
going the extra mile for customers
during a lengthy mains renewal job in
Southampton. One day they stayed on
site until 7pm, having started work at
7.30am, to ensure every householder’s
water was back on. The resident who
got home from work last wrote in to
praise their professionalism and
attitude, saying they were a credit to
the company.
Darren is from Shoreham and has
worked for Clancy for ten years, while
Ricky, from Worthing, is a longstanding
friend of Darren’s who joined the
company 18 months ago - and the pair
have worked together ever since.
Commenting on the award, Darren
said, “I was shocked to hear we’d won,
but really delighted – it feels great. The
public can be a bit harsh sometimes. I’ve
had people swear at me and call me an
idiot because I’m digging up the road,
but over the years I’ve learnt that if you
are always polite and helpful, they
usually calm down.
We always try to keep the access clear,
sweep and tidy up after ourselves and
keep everyone happy. It’s much better to
be nice to everyone – it makes all our
lives easier. Me and Ricky make a good
team – I wouldn’t want to work with
anyone else.”
Ricky added, “This is great, quite an
achievement. It’s brilliant working with
Darren and winning this is a real bonus.
I think I’m really good at dealing with
customers and have good people skills.
The thing is, they are always right, even
when they’re wrong!”
Matt Bailey, Clancy’s Regional
Director, confirmed, “We are very
proud and excited to win the first
Southern Water Excellent Customer
Service award. This demonstrates our
commitment to customers and how our
internal ‘Ambassador Training’ is
benefiting the business.”
Clancy Docwra created the
Ambassador Training programme
specifically for frontline staff who deal
with customers. It has now become a
company-wide standard which every
member of staff has to complete. Also
commenting on the award, Head of
Capital Delivery at Southern Water
Richard Price said, “Darren and Ricky
deserved to win because they
consistently go above and beyond their
duties. It’s the kind of performance that
delights our customers and shows what
we can do on every scheme.”
Darren and Ricky share a prize of £200
worth of high street vouchers and will
have a Top Team sticker to display on
Anglian Water Customer Care
Stand Down Day
On Friday 1st June we held a ‘stand down
day’ in conjunction with May Gurney and
Anglian Water, focusing on improving
customer care across the Anglian Water
Metering contracts. In total nearly 300
people were involved and all operatives
from May Gurney and Clancy Docwra
attended the day.
This extremely successful event was
designed and delivered by a working
group which included employees
from all three businesses, clearly
demonstrating the high level of
collaboration in existence between
the companies.
The event started with an
introduction from Martyn Oakley,
Anglian Water's Customer Services
Director who thanked everyone for all
the hard work they have carried out
on the contract to date, and then
went on to outline the challenge
which OFWATs Service Incentive
parties concerned.
extra mile’, Daniel Twomey and Simon
Noden for ‘Most Improved Team’ and
Tommy Mitchell for ‘Most Customer
The event consisted of four customerfocused
sessions - Live Role Play,
What Type of Customer Are You?,
Managing Perceptions and Anglian
Water Products and Services. All the
groups attending these sessions
consisted of both Clancy Docwra and
May Gurney staff. The Live Role Play
in particular proved extremely popular
and was great fun, with everyone
getting fully involved!
Following on from the sessions, those
working on the contract were updated
on key Clancy Docwra information by
Matt Cannon, who delivered a 6S
presentation to all Clancy Docwra
personnel. A short contract
improvement session was also held, to
give everyone the opportunity to
voice any concerns they had around
the delivery of the contract.
A Helping
Paddock Wood
Half Marathon
Earlier this year we were
approached by South East
Water's Leakage Manager
Richard Elliott, to ask if we
would be willing to sponsor
Paddock Wood Athletic Club’s
Charity Half Marathon, which
took place on April 1st.
As Honorary Secretary of the
club, Richard was involved in
managing the logistics behind
the event, including the need to
provide clear routes for the
runners and to keep onlookers
and supporters away from the
race area. As such, our
‘sponsorship’ took the form of
200m of Clancy Docwra's red
and green safety barriers, which
we were extremely happy to
donate for the event.
To reinforce the importance which
Anglian Water places on excellent
Customer Care, Martyn also presented
a series of awards, and we were
extremely pleased to receive three of
these - Simon Tatnall for ‘Going the
All in all the day was a huge success,
and thanks must go to Stewart
Cresswell of Clancy Docwra and
Lindsay Congeve of May Gurney for all
the hard work that went in to
organising the entire event!
The race was a roaring success,
with a record entry of almost
2,000 runners on the day, and
no rain. We made sure that the
barriers were delivered in good
time, the day before the event,
and that the race organisers had
everything they needed to keep
the crowds at bay!
After the event, Race Director
James Ridger emailed Richard to
say, “Please can you pass on my
thanks to Clancy's for supplying the
barriers for the Half Marathon. It
was very helpful and made the
event look more professional. We
received a record entry and should
show a healthy profit towards our
be able to provide our race charity
‘The Hospice in the Weald’ with a
This Quarter’s Riskmaster Prize Draw Winner
The Riskmaster driver monitoring programme has been in
place since last September, monitoring all of our 1,500+
drivers and ‘scoring’ them in terms of their driving history
and safety.
We take factors such as accidents, endorsements and so on
into account, and these are listed as ‘points’ on a driver's
internal permit to drive. All drivers who have less than 10
points, and who do not gain any more points during the
quarter, are can take part in the draw - and then we literally
pull a winner ‘out of the hat’ from all the drivers who qualify!
On average, around 70% of our staff are able to take part
each quarter, and this quarter’s worthy winner was Ross
Morton - our Plant and Stores Manager from Aldershot. The
quarterly prize is £200 worth of Red Letter Days vouchers,
and this was presented to Ross on 1st March by Peter Dando
from Red Letter Days.
Commenting on the Riskmaster programme, Peter said, “It
that is really focusing on rewarding their staff for the
Protecting Schoolchildren and Dormice . . .
The line of the sewers runs right through Ashenground
valuable wildlife refuge, as well as being popular with local
residents. In addition, teaching staff from Bolnore Village
their children to school.
Preparations for the work started long before drilling began,
to ensure that the dormouse population was protected.
Clancy Docwra also established relations with the school
Clancy Docwra has just finished installing two sewers which
Haywards Heath. But with the works taking place in an area of
designated Ancient Woodland - with a nearby primary school
and a very active dormouse population - it was never going
to be a straightforward project!
Children were invited to the site to watch the drilling and our
team also held a question-and-answer session for them. We
also asked Year 3 pupils to design posters warning of the
dangers of playing near construction sites - with the best
ones being made into permanent external panels and
attached to the site fencing.
The entire relationship was so successful that head teacher
Sharon Allen even wrote Clancy Docwra a personal letter
of thanks!
I SKILLED people I
Family Values: Khyati and Robert Pugh
For the first
time, we have a
married couple
for our ‘Family
Values’ feature!
Marketing and Communications
Manager Mark Sewell recently
interviewed Khyati and Robert
Pugh, who met after joining
Clancy Docwra and now both
work on the Optimise Joint
Venture – Capital Delivery.
MS - Please can you give me a brief
description of your roles within the
business.
KP - My job title is Streetworks Coordinator.
This involves looking after
New Roads and Streetworks Notices
(NRSWA) on the Capital Delivery side of
the contract, including defects, Section
74 fines and Fixed Penalty Notices.
RP - I am in Construction Assurance,
which covers Quality, Health, Safety and
Environment. This means that I work
closely with the Optimise team
obviously, but also with Thames
Assurance to ensure the integrity of the
project throughout its lifecycle.
How long have you been with the
business?
KP - Six years
RP - Seven years
How did you meet?
KP - Well, we were colleagues first and
foremost . . .
RP - Yes, and then our relationship just
blossomed from there!
22 I Summer Issue
What does a family business mean to
you?
KP – I see a family business as having
some key aspects to it, such as loyalty, a
supporting culture and greater
potential for promotion from within. It’s
also helped us to feel more
comfortable about being married and
working together.
RP - Well it’s a two pronged thing for us.
Obviously there is the Clancy family
business aspect, and you can see that
the family ethos is very strong from
their perspective with the third
generation coming through now. But
the added aspect (and bonus) is that we
are married and so can relate with the
family side of it from that aspect as well.
Khyati and
Robert Pugh
How does the fact that you are
married affect your work life?
KP - Well, we sit next to each other in
work, but when we are there it is purely
on a professional basis! We did worry at
first about how it would be perceived
on the contract, but everyone has been
very supportive and it’s not been an
issue at all.
RP - Obviously, on the way home we
ask each other how their day has been,
but our private life is our private life
and it’s the same for the professional
side. We have certainly never brought
any home disagreements into work!
Are you aware of the 6S Vision?
KP - Yes I am, and you can see how it is
rapidly becoming the heart of the
business.
RP - I’m also aware of it. In fact, we are
both undertaking our Institute of
Leadership and Management (ILM) 3
Certificate and the 6S Vision is
reiterated throughout the course.
What do you see as challenges to the
business?
KP – The Optimise contract itself has
brought some new challenges, having
previously worked on the VMR project in
London. Dealing with other partner
companies, and different systems and
processes, has taken some time to adjust
to, but it has been a good learning curve
and we are on the right tracks!
RP - I think that Mobile-i is one of the
real challenges for the business. I know
it is working well on OPEX contracts,
but the challenge for us on Optimise is
to make it work on CAPEX projects as
well. Especially on a large Capital
Project that have slow moving stages
and not any real time-movement as
you get with OPEX contracts.
MS - Thank you for your time

Some Sad News to Report . . .
We are saddened to include in this
issue news of the death of two of our
colleagues and friends.
Peter Shadbolt
Our CPH Fitter, Peter Shadbolt, passed
away in December 2011. He leaves
behind him wife Doreen and also his
son Brian, who still works for us in the
Thames Valley area on the Optimise
contract. Peter had worked for Clancy
Docwra for 13 years and will be sadly
missed.
Lundie Hall
Lundie died in May 2012, having
joined the Estimating team in March
2010. Whilst he had only been with
the team for just over two years, he
gained the confidence of all those
who worked with him, and was
always a pleasure to work with thanks
to his dry sense of humour. He will be
sorely missed by all those who
worked with him.
RIP Lundie and Peter.
It is with sadness also that we
report the death of Professor
Fionula Brennan, the wife of Paul
Gallagher Senior Contracts
Manager with Clancy Docwra Rail.
Following a family funeral in
buried in Difreen Graveyard,
County Leitrim, Ireland. Our
sincere sympathies are extended
to Paul and their children Ciaran
and Bridget.
Summer Issue I 23

I SKILLED I
At Work With...
Alan Skipper and Robin Parry
well and to make sure customer satisfaction levels are met.
RP - My biggest challenge is the area we cover. You could be
in Romsey one day and Ramsgate the next - we're all over
the place!
What is your favourite movie?
AS - The Shawshank Redemption, a cracking film with
class actors.
RP - Rear Window, mostly because of Grace Kelly. I've seen it
more than 20 times!
Alan Skipper (left) with Robin Parry
What is your title and role?
AS – I’m Area Manager on the Southern Water MSF Contract,
for waste water planned works.
RP – And my title is Engineer, also for waste water planned
works on the Southern Water MSF Contract.
How long have you worked together?
AS – Almost two years, and I was with Clancy Docwra for a
year before that as well.
RP - 21 months, and prior to that I was on the Graduate
scheme.
Describe yourself in three words.
AS – Hardworking, Focused, Approachable.
RP – I was going to say hardworking! OK, Self-motivated,
Loyal, Flexible.
What is the favourite part of your role?
AS – I enjoy working within such a dedicated team, and on
such a wide variety of workstreams.
RP – Definitely the team, they are a great bunch of people.
And also the fact that we work on all aspects of waste water
infrastructure, which gives us such a broad range of projects.
What is the biggest challenge in your role?
AS - We have lots of different workstreams and many of our
schemes are very challenging so it can be difficult to do it
Marmite - Love it or hate it?
AS - Love it! And Vegemite, and Bovril . . .
RP - I'm with the Danish - they banned it! I hate Twiglets too,
they're horrible.
Outside of work, what do you consider your greatest
achievement?
AS - Playing football at Highbury and at the Goldstone
Ground as a member of Brighton Youth team in the early 80s.
Closely followed by my two kids!
RP - Backpacking across Asia, Australia, New Zealand and
America over 18 months. I even worked in Oz for a while as a
builder's labourer.
AS - With a mullet! I've seen the pictures . . .
You have been stranded on a desert island and you
can take three things with you. What would you
take?
AS – My iPad, a box of lighters so I don't have to rub sticks
together, and a big box of toilet paper. Don't want to be
messing around with any leaves!
RP - A 'How to Fly' manual, some fuel and an aeroplane -
either a seaplane or a Harrier Jump Jet as I guess as there
won't be a runway . . .
What does the 6S Vision mean to you?
AS - A vision and focus for the workforce. Something we can
aim towards and strive for.
RP – It helps us to meet customer requirements and to
deliver to their objectives. But profitably - to provide a future
for the business so that we can still be here in years to come.
