94 94 Tetradrachm or 1/2-Mnaieion (Gold) 145-116 BC, Alexandria. Struck in memorial of the deified Arsinoe II under Ptolemy VIII, 145-116 BC. Diademed and veiled head of Arsinoe II right, wearing stephane and ram's horn, sceptre over far shoulder, behind 'K' / / APSINOHS - FILADELFOY. "Single" (!) cornucopia tied with the royal diadem. Svoronos, Pt. cf. 1500 (double cornucopia); SNG Cop. -. 13.40 g. Extremely rare "single-cornucopia" type. Nice coin with high relief, extremely fine CHF 20´000.- The reverse of the rare Egyptian Tetradrachm in memorial of Arsinoe II usually shows the double cornucopia. Our coin is an extremely rare variety with the single cornucopia instead of the common double version. Not one specimen of this rare single cornucopia variety was recorded recently in auctions. 95 95 Berenike II, wife of Ptolemy III, 246-222 BC. Pentakaidekadrachm (Silver) Alexandria (?). Veiled and draped bust right / / BASSILISHS - BERENIKHS. Single cornucopia, bound with fillet, between two laureate pilei. Svoronos, Pt. 988; SNG Cop. -. 52.39 g. Very rare. The largest Ancient Egyptian Silver Coin. Unimportant flan crack, otherwise, choice extremely fine specimen with fine grey toning CHF 35´000.- The series has traditionally been attributed to Berenike II, the daughter of Magas of Kyrene and wife of Ptolemy III Euergetes. Hazzard has proposed instead that it honored Berenike Syra, the sister of Ptolemy III and widow of the Seleukid king, Antiochos II Theos. Hazard argues the coins were struck in Syria from locally acquired silver to pay the Ptolemaic army deployed there to press the claim of Berenike’s child to the Seleukid throne even though the two had been murdered in the meanwhile. These coins were carried back to Egypt by the soldiers as their pay. The use of the long-discontinued Attic standard, he argues, implies a provincial mint rather than Alexandria. There are increasingly subtle arguments in favor of each position, and the issue remains the subject of continuing debate. Berenike II. wurde um 270 v. Chr. als Tochter des Magas von Kyrene und der syrischen Prinzessin Apama geboren. Um 250 v. Chr. wurde sie von Magas mit Ptolemaios III. verlobt, nach dem Tod ihres Vaters wurde diese Verlobung jedoch gelöst und ihre Mutter verheiratete Berenike mit einem Bruder des Antigonos Gonatas, der jedoch bald ermordet wurde. Berenike heiratete 246 v. Chr. Ptolemaios III., der in den Dritten Syrischen Krieg zog und die Regierungsgeschäfte in der Heimat seiner Gemahlin überließ. Aus dieser Zeit stammt die Geschichte von der "Locke der Berenike": Die Königin gelobte, für die glückliche Heimkehr ihres Mannes eine Haarlocke zu opfern, die in den Tempel der Arsinoe gebracht wurde, dort jedoch am nächsten Tag verschwunden war. Der Mathematiker und Hofastronom Konon von Samos soll die Locke als Sternbild am Himmel wiederentdeckt haben. Aus der Ehe mit Ptolemaios III. gingen sechs Kinder hervor, u. a. Ptolemaios IV., der jedoch seine Mutter bald nach dem Tod des Ptolemaios III. ermorden ließ. Berenike wurde bereits zu Lebzeiten kultisch verehrt, Ptolemaios IV. richtete 211/210 v. Chr. anläßlich der Ptolemaia ein Priesteramt, die Athlophore der Berenike Euergetis ein, welche im Rang noch vor dem Priesteramt der Arsinoe II. rangierte. 32

Tiny scratch on obverse, otherwise, almost extremely fine CHF 10´000.- This interesting octodrachm was probably struck under Ptolemy III to honour his ancestors. A small quantity of these coins have already been struck under Ptolemy II. Svoronos assigns these coins to him. 97 97 97 97 King Ptolemy IV, 221-205 BC. Octodrachm or Mnaieion (Gold) 220-215 BC, Alexandria. Bust of Ptolemy III right, wearing radiate diadem and aegis, behind shoulder, sceptre trident / / Radiate cornucopia bound with fillet; below 'DI'. BMC 103; SNG Cop. 196; Svoronos, Pt. 1117. 27.83 g. Very rare. Very attractive almost extremely fine CHF 20´000.- The deified Ptolemy III is shown wearing the attributes of Helios (radiate diadem), Neptune (sceptre trident) and Athena (aegis). The combination of these three deities was a widespread symbolism in Hellenism. ZEUGITANIA 98 98 CARTHAGE. Trihemistater (Gold) 241-237 BC, Carthage.
