Empty rumen<br />

The danger triangle<br />

Found on the <strong>cow</strong>’s left-side, between the hook bone and the<br />

last rib, the danger triangle (or hollow) indicates a <strong>cow</strong> has not<br />

eaten in the last six hours.<br />

The apple and the pear<br />

Look at the <strong>cow</strong> from behind – the apple is the left side of the<br />

belly and the pear is the right side. A healthy <strong>cow</strong> will have a<br />

belly bulging out on the left side and feels firm and juicy when<br />

pressed in. If not, it has not had enough food for one week.<br />

Deep cuckoo hole<br />

Again, look at the <strong>cow</strong> from behind. The cuckoo hole (otherwise<br />

known as the tail hollow) is found on either side of the tail and<br />

if it is deep, indicates a very thin <strong>cow</strong> with little body fat (the<br />

equivalent to
