Welcome to the Grand Marais Art Colony
The horizon of a new year is mirrored in the expanse of Lake Superior. With every
lapping wave, lingering sunset or star-studded evening sky, each moment gives us a
renewed opportunity to be inspired, connected and engaged.
At the Grand Marais Art Colony, the beauty of nature surrounds and nurtures us.
It is within this atmosphere that we can disconnect from the distractions of daily life
and reconnect with our innate creative spirits. We can be more fully present and
focused to pursue our artistic endeavors.
Whether you seek artistic instruction, a rejuvenating retreat into a professional art
studio, active participation in an art-centered festival event or a deeper appreciation
of art; this year at the Art Colony there are many opportunities to immerse yourself
in a creative experience surrounded by an engaged and supportive community.
We are really excited about our new Artist-in-Residence program, which will feature
artist Hazel Belvo this first year. Not only will Ms. Belvo produce a major body of
large-scale work during her time at the Art Colony, she will also host three lectures
and daily open studios for the public to learn, observe and experience the artistic
process. Another new event is the Northern Fibers Retreat, a cozy festival in the
heart of winter that celebrates the art and craft of fiber in a community of fellow
fiber enthusiasts. These new events join our program roster that includes over 100
classes, six other events and studio access in our four professional art studios.
Let this new year be an endless horizon of creative exploration. Enter our
community where strangers become friends and the artistic process is nurtured with
