The cultivation of kiwi arose in
Asturias in the early seventies
with experimental plantations were
carried out by D. Manuel Coque,
head of horticulture agribusiness
research center of Asturias in
Villaviciosa. In the middle of that
decade and began to see that the
plant had adapted perfectly to
various areas of Asturias. As the
market offered very good
prospects in Spain for its high consumption and high price (at
the time the Kiwis were paid for units not kilos), professional
development of the crop began with a great progression
during the eighties of the last century. The road has since
experienced some ups and downs. In the early nineties there
was a small crisis by falling prices and survived only
professional farms. Earlier this century it was again
increased the number of cultivated hectares in the region.
At present they are implementing new and important projects
to strengthen further in Asturias kiwi cultivation. They have
planted about 100 new hectares meaning that acreage has
almost multiplied by 2 in a few years. And that the problems
to grow kiwis in Asturias are not few.
