Solemnity of Easter the Resurrection of the Lord
Dear Friends,
Peace and all Good!
Happy Easter! This grand day of Easter is to be a happy day. We should
try to put aside at least for today our troubles and our worries and to open
ourselves to a spirit of joy which is expressed in the one great word of
Easter, “Alleluia.” This Hebrew word need not and should not be
translated. It is an expression of the heart more than of the mind. It
suggests feelings which transcend the intellectual and represents euphoria,
a sense that all is right after all, that God is good and he is our God.
These last three days we have agonized with Jesus at his last meal with his
disciples and then the cruel suffering and torture of his crucifixion. So that
we may see the whole story, the Church does not take down the cross or
hide it on Easter Sunday. We are not ashamed of the cross, nor are we
embarrassed that Jesus had to die on it. When Jesus died, his life flowed
out from him into his disciples of all times. He gave the gift of life to his
mystical body—the Church! And so, today we rejoice that the Chosen
One is truly alive—that he has overcome all this destruction and pain—
that he is raised!
Last night, at the Easter Vigil, ten Elect of God were baptized. Others will
be received into full communion of the Catholic Church on next Sunday,
Divine Mercy Sunday. These “seekers” give all of us new excitement
about our own faith in Christ. Easter is the springtime of the Church, the
time for the great sacraments of baptism and Eucharist. Let us rejoice with
these newest brothers and sisters to our faith and thank them for giving us
renewed joy in the resurrection of Christ who brings hope where things
seem hopeless!
One of the key factors of the catechumens’ preparation for the Easter
Sacraments is the participation in the Church’s mission through prayer and
work. These new Catholics will be invited into the public worship of the
Church in the Divine Liturgy and then to give of their gifts for the service
of this parish community. As these “neophytes”—new lights—discern the
way in which they will be of service to St. Mary’s, this would be a good
time for us to examine our own commitment to the community. Has God
gifted me with a singing voice to offer my time and talent to help provide
beautiful music for our liturgical celebrations? Can I offer some time to
help serve at Coffee and Conversation on Sunday mornings? Can I spend
a few minutes before and after Mass at the Welcome Booth to greet new
parishioners and visitors? Can I give some time to our St. Vincent de Paul
Society’s ministry to the poor and hungry? Can I take some time out of
my busy schedule to visit the sick at Good Samaritan Hospital? What are
your gifts? Do your gifts shine and light the way? If you need some help
to discern your participation in our parish community, please do not
hesitate to call on me. Thank you.
In recent days, God has given us a beautiful sign of Easter joy in the
election of Pope Francis. His simple, humble and encouraging manner he
reminds us all to give of ourselves totally to the life and the work of the
Risen Lord. The Holy Father has asked us to pray for him that God will
bless him. Let us do so and also pray for one another that we too will be
filled with Easter excitement, joy and courage to bring resurrection life to
others!
On behalf of the friars and staff of St. Mary’s, I wish all of you a Blessed
and Happy Easter!
Love,

WITNESS AND PROCLAMATION
Imagine, if you will, someone coming to you and saying, “I have something to share with you, something too wonderful to
hold back, something that, quite possibly, you will not believe. You may even want to kill me after I say it. I know this, and
yet I must speak.” Peter, in today’s first reading, is driven to bear witness to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ,
even though he knows that he will be rejected and suffer for it. When we hear about Peter, filled with the Spirit and with
Easter joy, proclaiming the Good News, we hear what we, the baptized, must do as well. In the reading from Colossians, St.
Paul reminds us that resurrection is not just a solitary event, but a continuing part of our lives. Because of our baptism, we
live anew and are raised with Christ in glory.
WITNESS AND EXPERIENCE
John’s Gospel captures the flavor of the Easter morning experience. Picture Mary coming to the tomb in the dark. Feel her
confusion, her fear as she discovers that the tomb is empty. Nothing in her life could have prepared her for this moment.
Yes, Jesus had told them that he would rise again, but how could they have understood? She runs to Peter, heart pounding,
tears flowing. Peter and the beloved disciple dash to the tomb, confused and fearful as well. It is Peter who goes in first:
Peter, the rock of the church of Christ. He holds the burial cloths in his hands. They stand in the empty tomb, silent. They
don’t understand yet, but they know that life has changed in a way that they had not thought possible. Their heads swim in
confusion, but their hearts burn with the fire of the Spirit. Can it be true? Has Jesus indeed risen?
We, too, have stood with Mary, Peter, and all the disciples in the empty tomb, filled with fear and foreboding, yet also with
Spirit-enflamed hearts pounding. The power of Easter joy can temper our fears and take us from the tomb out into the world,
where we must spread the Good News: Christ is risen!
Easter
Paul Turner
On Easter Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from
the dead. On this day the disciples saw the empty tomb, and the
risen Jesus began to appear to them. Easter celebrates our
belief in life after death. It ranks first among the feasts of the
church.
The Easter Sunday Mass differs a bit from others. The new
paschal candle is lighted and stands near the ambo. Having
omitted the Glory to God throughout the season of Lent, we
sing it again. The Easter sequence is said or sung after the
second reading. During Lent we sang a different acclamation
before the Gospel, but now we sing “Alleluia” again. In the
United States the creed may be replaced with the renewal of
baptismal promises and the sprinkling of holy water on this
day.
There are small changes to the Eucharistic prayer. If you are
alert, you will hear during the preface that Christ became our
paschal sacrifice “on this day.” If the priest is using Eucharistic
Prayer I, he announces that this is the day of the resurrection of
the Lord and that the community prays especially for those
newly baptized at the Easter Vigil.
At the end of the Mass, the deacon or priest adds two
“alleluias” to the words of dismissal, and you respond, “Thanks
be to God, alleluia, alleluia.”
Attendance is strong on Easter, as all those who profess faith in
Christ join together in a single celebration. Many worshipers
like to dress up for the occasion. The main Easter liturgy is the
Easter Vigil on Saturday night, and all Catholics should make
every effort to participate in it. But Easter Sunday remains a
popular choice for affirming one’s faith in the risen Christ.
Please pray for these couples and for all preparing
for the Sacrament of Marriage.
Easter Sunday Vespers
at 5:00 p.m.
You are invited to take part in one of the
Church’s most blessed liturgies: “Sunday
Vespers” or “Evening Prayer”. This is not
a Mass. It is a service which includes the
singing of several assigned psalms from
the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament), the
most hallowed prayers in the scriptures.
We then listen to the Word of God and
conclude with the singing of Mary’s words
in the Magnificat, the General
Intercessions, The Lord’s Prayer and the
Dismissal. We will begin at 5:00 p.m. in
the Basilica.
Saints Simon & Jude Cathedral presents
Teaching and Exposition of Sacred Relics
on Tuesday, April 16 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his very special
ministry to teach about these holy objects. He will bring with him over 150 relics, some
as old as 2000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese
of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas
Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one
of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate
each relic.
In the Church’s history many miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and many have been healed
through this ministry. Please do not miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as
rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members which you will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a
means of intercession. For more information visit www.treasuresofthechurch.com
