Having established himself as one of the most prominent coaches in the Central
Region, John Hedlund, who is set to begin his 11th year at North Texas, led the
Mean Green soccer team to its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament
and a school-record 16 wins last season. Hedlund was also named the Sun Belt
Conference Co-Coach of the Year.
Since starting the program from scratch in 1995 by implementing a gameplan
that emphasizes recruiting from the surplus of talent available in the Lone Star
State, the Mean Green has vaulted into one of the premier programs in the state
of Texas.
During Hedlund’s tenure at North Texas he has won 146 games and currently
ranks 14th all-time in the NCAA in winning percentage and 14th among active
coaches in the NCAA.
During his 10 years as the head coach of the Mean Green, Hedlund has seen 35
players selected to the all-conference team, 11 players named all-region, and
the Mean Green has never had a losing season in the program’s history. Under
Hedlund’s leadership North Texas has captured two Sun Belt Conference regular
season championships and one Sun Belt Conference Tournament title.
But winning is nothing new to Hedlund and the Mean Green. His teams have
been ranked in the Top 10 in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz in eight of the
last nine years, with the 2004 club posting the school’s best-ever record of 16-6-
1.
Hedlund’s program can boast having never had a losing record. Since joining the
Sun Belt Conference five years ago, the Mean Green have established themselves
one of the league’s premier programs. With the program’s success has
come recognition for Hedlund and his players. Three years ago Hedlund was
recognized as the North Texas Coach of the Year by the Dallas Morning News
and the Dallas All Sports Association. This past season Hedlund was named the
Coach of the Year by the Greater Denton Sports Commission.
