Probe trials
3 measurements were made:
(1) time spent in a circular area 40 cm in
diameter centered on the platform's location
(Annulus-40)
(2) the mean distance of the swim path from
the platform's location (corrected for start
position)
(3) the number of times that the rat swam
across the exact place where the platform had
been located

(motivational/emotional or sensorimotor
defect)
- Top of the escape platform protruded 2 cm above
the surface of the water.
- The rim of the platform was covered with black tape
to make it more visible against the background of the
white water.
- All animals were given six trials
- intertrial interval of 10 min.
- Platform was moved to a new location for every trial.
- Start position was also varied, but the distance to
the platform from the start position was kept constant.

• Immunohistochemistry
- Terminally anesthetized with sodium
secobarbital
- Transcardially perfused with 0.9%
saline followed by ice cold 4%
paraformaldehyde in phosphate buffered
saline (PBS, 0.1 M; pH 7.4)
- Extracted brains postfixed in 4%
paraformaldehyde for 12 h at 4 °C, and
then transferred to 30% sucrose in PBS.
