COLLEGE LEADERSHIP TEAM
SMMC UNIFORM POLICY
Our uniform policy is founded on inclusivity. To this
end we have rules and regulations that ensure that
students are not excluded on the basis of their
access to resources. So it is timely, as we head
toward the end of term, that reminders about
earrings and hemlines are noted. What is and is not
acceptable is clearly demonstrated in the pictures
below and again this ensures that simple
inexpensive jewellery is worn. Likewise the modesty
of a hemline that brushes the knee contrasts the
mid-thigh dresses we are seeing at the moment.
Your daughter may be issued with a Uniform Notice
(pink slip) as pictured and this will be advice that a
amendments to the uniform need to be made.
We therefore ask that parents take the opportunity
to support this policy by lowering hemlines over the
holidays, and ensuring that your daughters do not
leave home with rings on their fingers and bells on
their toes.
As we approach Open Day it is important to
remember that our school uniform and those that
wear it are our brand in the community, so it should
all be worn appropriately and proudly after school
hours too.
Again thank you for your continued support and
cooperation.
YEARS 11/12 EXAMS
Years 11/12 students have received copies of their exam schedule for next week. A copy can also be found on
our Website http://www.smmc.catholic.edu.au/curriculum/assessment-calendar
Students should ensure that they are at the Exam venue at least 10 minutes before the start of the exam and
to have the correct materials for the exam. Students need to be in their correct School Uniform for Exams
(some practical exams will require students to wear their Sports Uniform) or if studying at school. There is a
supervised study area (Library-4) provided for students, however Year 11/12 students need only be at school
for their exams.
If a student is sick and cannot do an exam, she will need to present a Doctor’s Certificate to me. If feasible, I
will make alternate assessment arrangements. Please also ring the school on the morning of the exam to let
the teacher know if someone is sick and cannot do the exam.
YEAR 11 STUDENT TO ATTEND MOVERS & SHAKERS
This year over the Easter holidays, Year 11 student, Sharni Jayawardhana will travel to Toowoomba to attend
Movers & Shakers, a week-long Christian Leadership training programme for youth and young adults aged 16-
19 years.
Through participation in the programme, students develop leadership skills and build self-confidence. The
program has been developed to be as experiential as possible. The young people will share in small groups and
will be challenged to work together in problem solving situations.
We wish Sharni all the best and look forward to her sharing her experiences when she returns.
NEWS FROM THE COUNSELLORS
Tips for Improving Your Concentration
• Take short breaks – divide your work into one - hour segments, with a 5–10 minute break between
tasks. This short break will allow your mind to rest before focusing again.
• Do your hardest tasks when you're most alert – This will help you maximize your concentration.
• Promise yourself a reward – For instance, make a rule that if you focus intensively for 45 minutes
on one task, you can take a break. Little "self-rewards" can often be great motivators.
•Ask someone else to check up on you. Peer pressure works! Make sure they are suitable bossy.
•Identify the unpleasant consequences of NOT doing the task.
STUDENTS ‘EGG-CITED’ TO HELP
The true Maggies spirit has shone yet again, with a very large collection of Easter bunnies, eggs and bilbies
being donated for the annual Vinnies Easter appeal. For three weeks, eggs and bunnies of all shapes and sizes
have been accumulating in my office and this week we had the great pleasure of handing them over to the
senior St Vincent de Paul Society conferences, and in particular, our own St Mary Mackillop Parish conference.
The ‘goodies’ are distributed to the families they assist. Many thanks to all who made a donation this year and
I know that there are many, many children who will receive a surprise come Easter Sunday because of your
generosity.
MESSAGES ABOUT SMMC CLOSURE & CANCELLATION OF EVENTS
If the College has to be closed because of weather or some other reason, this will be broadcast on ABC radio.
Normally all Catholic and State schools follow the same decision based on advice on weather, roads and water
levels. Any early closures will be notified on radio as well.
Parents may find that their own circumstances do not allow them to send their children to school, because of
flooding or the risk of floods. Please contact the school in the normal way. Whatever the reasons for students
missing school for legitimate causes, teachers always assist and if necessary modify work demands for
students.

YEAR 8 STUDENT SHAVES FOR A CURE
Last Friday Year 8 student Abbey Bowe had a haircut,
witnessed by about 200 girls. No ordinary trim but Abbey's
long and wavy locks were taken off at the scalp for a very
good cause. Abbey's hair will be used to make a wig for
someone undergoing cancer treatment. Her brave
endeavour was in support of the Leukaemia Foundations
"Shave for a Cure" campaign, which runs at this time in
our community. Abbey has sought the support of many
students who have pledged donations for her brave act.
We congratulate Abbey and remind people who have
pledged donations to meet this obligation as soon as
possible so that Abbey can forward her fundraising efforts
on to where they can do most good.
