AWARDS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT
On Friday 8 February, the College held a Special Awards Assembly. The students from Year 12, 2012 who
achieved OP scores in the range 1 – 5 were invited to the Assembly and were presented with Certificates to
acknowledge this wonderful achievement. Awards for Academic Excellence and Academic Improvement, based
on the 2012 End-of-Year Reports, were also presented to some Year 9 – 12 students. Congratulations to our
award winners!
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARDS:
To identify students for Academic Excellence Awards, we looked at the percentage of “A” results that each
student in the College had achieved. Students in Years 11 2012 (our current Year 12 students) needed to
achieve “A” results in at least 50% of their subjects to receive an award while students who were in Years 8, 9
and 10 in 2012 (our current Year 9 – 11 students) required “A” results in 60% or more of their subjects.
BISHOP MICHAEL LAUNCHES PROJECT
COMPASSION 2013
Tuesday last week, Swetha Hickman, Lily Mitchell and
Catharina Offermans attended the Diocesan Launch of Project
Compassion which was held at Marian School. Bishop Michael
Putney launched the annual appeal and thanked families in
Catholic schools for their support of the valuable work which
Caritas continues to do in responding to the needs of some of the
most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the world.
Last Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we marked the beginning of
Lent with prayer and ritual where ashes were placed on our
foreheads to remind us that we also need to make changes and
so be revitalized in our love for ourselves and our neighbour. The
season of Lent invites us into a time of reflection, transformation
and conversion as we seek healing for the brokenness of our
world and its people.
Each class has a Project Compassion box and students are
encouraged to be generous this Lent so that the money they
raise can support a Caritas Australia project.
$5 could buy a chicken for Matuba Children’s Centre, to raise and sell to provide
food, medical supplies and school uniforms for children in Mozambique
$10 could provide a family with a water filter to access clean, safe water and reduce
waterborne diseases in Cambodia.
$30 could provide materials, reference books and resources for skills training for one
person for a year in Papua New Guinea
$50 could provide a bicycle for a young person to travel to school and to use for work
in Cambodia
$100 could buy a box of materials for children to learn carpentry at the Matuba
Children’s Centre in Mozambique.
HOMEWORK and TUTORIAL PROGRAMME
A number of our teachers give generously of their time to provide extra help for our students. The “Homework
Programme” is based in the Library and some teachers provide general assistance for students who stay to work
in the Library at this time. Other teachers provide tutorial assistance in their subject areas. It is important for your
daughter to remember that she can attend any of the tutorials in a particular subject area, not only those run by
her teacher.
An electronic copy of the schedule for our Homework and Tutorial Programme for Semester 1 is available with
this newsletter. Important reminders about attending tutorials and about accessing school files from home are
also included. Your daughter received a printed copy of this tutorial timetable handout in Homeroom on Monday.
SEMESTER 1 ASSESSMENT CALENDARS
By the end of this week, each student will receive a copy of their Semester 1 Assessment planner. Students
would benefit from Parents/Guardians assisting them to manage their time, so as to ensure that all their
assignments are submitted on time and that they are doing sufficient revision for any upcoming exams. It may
be helpful for Parents/Guardians if students clearly highlighted on the Assessment Calendar, all assessment
items that were applicable to them. If the Assessment Calendar was to get lost, a copy can be found in:
Live Content → Whole College → Semester Planning Guides
Parents/Guardians and students should read the Assessment Procedure on the back of the Assessment Planner.
Years 11/12 students should particularly note that Technology Issues e.g. a corrupt USB, would not be normally
accepted as a reason for an extension. Students need to ensure that adequate backup processes are managed
correctly, which should include keeping a backup copy on the College Network.
BIRTHING KITS PRE-PACKING EVENING
Thursday, 28 TH February, 7.00pm
A birthing kit contains life saving items: a plastic sheet to give birth on, a scalpel to cut the cord, string to tie
off the umbilical cord, soap for the midwife to wash her hands, gloves for the midwife and three small cloth
swabs. This is not much - but it is enough to save the life of the mother and therefore, the infant. We are very
fortunate to have the opportunity to work with ZONTA to make a contribution that makes a difference to the
birthing outcome for a mother in a developing country.
A big thank you to the three parents who have volunteered to help out on the evening when we prepare the
items for our students to pack the following day. I still need at least ten more parents to come along and
support this fantastic community project. Having been part of this project for several years, I can assure you
that this is a very satisfying way to spend an evening.
If you can help, please send an email to me: joconnor@smmc.catholic.edu.au.
SMMC 1 faced Annandale CC in week 1. Unfortunately, Annnandale had to forfeit
the game. The girls look forward to their first game next week. SMMC 2 played
Townsville State High School. The girls showed great Maggies Spirit in their first
appearance in Maggie Colours. The girls suffered a loss but never gave up. Thank
you to our Basketball Captain Grace Meekin who refereed the game.
In our first game of the season, SMMC showed outstanding form and team spirit
to beat Kirwan 37-1. Exceptional shooting by Chloe Cooper and great support
play in the attacking third helped build our unassailable lead. Superb defense
stopped Kirwan in their tracks, and limited that team to just 1 goal for the game.
The SMMC team played with enthusiasm and great skill to dominate their
opposition in a perfect season opener. Well done girls!
SMMC2 (21) defeated SMMC1 (3)
Standouts for SMMC1 - Pria Babao, Olivia Taylor and Monica Donohue
Standouts for SMMC2 - Danielle Peterkin and Kolini Harrison.
Thanks to Kasey Walters for umpiring.
SMMC under 15 team B4 played their first game against fellow Maggies’ team B3
at home. Although they showed strength and determination, they were
convincingly defeated 17 points to 5. All our girls showed incredible Maggie spirit.
The side had the bye in week 1 and look forward to their first game of the season
next Friday.
2013 will see a large numbers of participating students in Netball at SMMC. There
are five full teams competing in the Under 15 Netball competition, which shows
promising potential for the near future. The first round saw four Maggies teams
competing against each with fierce rivalry, yet it was played in great spirit and
true sportsmanship was displayed.
LIBRARY NEWS
All Year 8 students have now completed a Library Orientation lesson. Using the clues hidden in the QR codes,
students had lots of fun navigating their way around the library to complete a “mud map” and answer a series
of questions about the library’s facilities and on-line resources. All Year 8 English classes have also had a Ribit
(Read In Bed – It’s Terrific) lesson where they were introduced to a selection of recommended reading
appropriate to their age level. We have a great range of fiction books in our library - students may borrow
freely from the collection and are encouraged to read widely and often!
so we can add them to our database.
We look forward to seeing you back at the College sometime this year to honour
