We Care Do You? - Carers Support Merton

Carers Support Merton held a

family fun day for all their carers

and the local community of

Merton. Held on the sunny, 8 th

June 2013 at the KNK stadium,

the day offered an opportunity

for carers young and old to

come along with their families and enjoy themselves. On offer to them and the general public were self

esteem building workshops, nutrition advice workshops, jewellery and caricature making sessions and

further indoor and outdoor activities including a bungee run which was very popular! Radio Jackie hosted a

multitude of activities and entertained us with music all day long.

The day was successful in enabling families and friends to come along together; which for some is a rarity

due to poor health and commitments to caring responsibilities. Feedback from attendees highlighted that the

day was very enjoyable and very beneficial. The day was a joint celebration as it was the 1 st birthday of the

Sutton and Merton AYCES project, which supports children aged between 10 -24 with a parent with a mental

health, drug or alcohol problem. Many of the children who access the services of the project and further

young carers team projects attended the day and enjoyed face painting, sports activities and entering the

Carers Got Talent Show which was entered by 19 fantastic contestants – both adult and young carers.

Thanks to Bluebird Care homes for sponsoring prizes we were able to offer the three top winners a trip for

four to a theme park, dinner for four and a hamper of very moreish sweets and chocolates!

This is the first family fun day that Carers Support Merton has organised; it was a celebration for carers of

their achievements and recognition for the wonderful support and care that they offer their loved ones

throughout the year. The day also succeeded in presenting the general public to an insight into the

organisation and awareness of the work and support we offer to unpaid carers in Merton. Due to the

accomplishments of the day we hope that 2013’s family day will be the first of many.
