2 GOOD NEWS! HHS in the News! Check us out on WLS and WGN TV Hinsdale Humane Society appeared recently on WLS TV for a special segment “Doggie Make-overs.” Four lucky adoptable dogs enjoyed becoming TV stars and instantly famous! Our phone lines starting ringing the minute the show aired, and all of the doggie models were adopted. HHS shelter staff and volunteers enjoyed hanging out behind the scenes and “the lights, cameras and action!” HHS also appeared on WGN TV Mid-day News showcasing adoptable animals and promoting our annual Pet Walk fundraiser. Thank you to Sandra Vaughn and the customers and employees of the Jewel Food Store in Elmhurst, who hosted a food & supply drive for the animals. And to the area schools who gave monetary donations and/or food & shelter suppies: Congress Park School students of Ms. Lockie. Special thanks to Pet Supplies Plus, Westmont, for donating pet goody bags for Pet Walk 2012. Sharon Kozij, Pet Supplies Plus Manager, generously donated hundreds of goody bags for both dogs and cats. Special thanks to Purina, Fromm and Natural Balance for contributing products & samples. Adventure in Animal Awareness... continued from page 1 A sunny Tuesday at Mayslake (part of DuPage County Forest Preserve) found our campers skimming pond scum and swooping nets through prairie grasses to see how many different species of bugs, snails and aquatic life we could identify (41 different species so far, including one small Blue Gill fish!) The campers learned how important pollinators are to our everyday lives (bugs are responsible for 33% of the fruits and vegetables we eat). Did you know that bugs and people are not always so different? Earwigs fiercely protect their young. Spiders build traps to catch food. Ants practice cooperative farming with aphids. During our visit to Shedd Aquarium, the campers learned that the same techniques used to train dogs are implemented with dolphins, whales and sea lions. Why train a sea lion? “So we can learn more about them and help keep them healthy,” answers Natalie, a 9 year old from Hinsdale. A camper favorite, the trip to Willow Brook Wildlife Center taught them how our modern world affects wild animals and how to respect wild life. At Brookfield Zoo, campers learned about “animal enrichment” and how to re-use and recycle objects like old phone books and plastic bottles into interactive toys and games for the animals. Most importantly we learned that animals, just like humans, need to respect others for what each species has to offer and that in order to be healthy, we need to be happy. Scholarships are available for financial need. Sam’s Medical Fund Sam, a Bernese mountain dog mix, came to us from an overcrowded downstate shelter. He was found as a stray, but was never claimed by his owner. Shortly after his arrival to Hinsdale Humane Society, we noticed him favoring his left rear leg. After a thorough examination by a veterinarian, it was discovered that Sam had a probable fracture as a puppy that did not heal properly. This will require a very expensive and complicated corrective osteotomy surgery to repair. We are constantly amazed at the compassion shown by so many of you… from the children who have hosted lemonade stands to the family who left a credit card slip and said they would cover whatever funds we could not raise! And the people who made donations, but didn’t want to be acknowledged. Sam We are currently consulting with veterinary experts to determine the best medical options for Sam, who in spite of constant pain, remains a sweet, gentle dog. As a result of the generosity of animal lovers in the community, volunteers, and staff, so far we have collected $2,886. During the month of May, they collected a dollar from every haircut and donated the proceeds to Hinsdale Humane Society. And, the grand total was $700! In addition, Cuts on Cass sponsored Pet Walk and donated a gift basket. Cuts on Cass, Crystal Gambosi and Katie Horejs, Coowners and Lori Halligan, HHS Executive Director Nick Kesseric collects pet food & supplies at Walgreens, Hinsdale ...to Nick Kesseric, Hinsdale Central High School, who organized a food and supply drive for his English class assignment “Impact on the World.” Nick raised $384.59 and collected dozens of items from the HHS wish list.
