Maria Lang
Maria Lang was a nom du plume for
Dagmar Lange, 1914–1991, who during her
lifetime wrote 42 detective stories and in
many regards can be considered the first
queen of Swedish crime fiction.
The Grand Old Lady of Swedish Crime
Sweden’s answer to Agatha Christie, and the
origin of the crime novel wave of our times. She
debuted in 1949 with Mördaren ljuger inte ensam
and for the next 42 years she dominated the
crime fiction genre, feeding her readers’ neverending
appetite for suspense.
The queen of cosy crime, Maria Lang (1914–
1991), wrote 42 much loved detective stories
during her lifetime. Her debut Mördaren ljuger
inte ensam was published in 1949 and was
followed by a new book each year until 1991.
Maria Lang (pseud. for Dagmar Lange) had
a PhD in Literature and worked as a director
of studies and senior lecturer at the New
Elementary School for Girls in Stockholm
from 1948 to 1974. She lived at times in Nora,
where she moved after her retirement. Maria
Lang was a member of the Swedish detective
academy.
For a long time, Maria Lang was one of the
most popular and widely read crime writers,
but lately her work has been neglected.
Her books are traditional puzzle mysteries
often set in the academic environment or
in the small mining town Skoga, a slight
euphemism for the real life Nora.
Christer Wijk, a handsome and pipe-smoking
detective is the recurrent problem solver
in her books. The protagonist in the first
novels is the dashing professor’s daughter
Puck Ekstedt, but from Vår sång blir stum/
Our song is dumb (1960), the detective novelist
Almi Graan (an anagram of Maria Lang)
helps Wijk solve the criminal mysteries.
Maria Lang describes human passions and
erotic conflicts but is sometimes startlingly
modern. Like in her first novel, where she
makes a both matter of fact and passionate
plea that homosexual love is real love too.
And this was written only five years after
homosexuality was decriminalized and thirty
years before the Swedish Board of Health
and Welfare stopped declaring it a disease.
This year, Swedish television channel TV4 is
making a series based on six of Maria Lang’s
books from the forties and fifties, all set
around Skoga and in different seasons. The
first film will be shown in cinemas in spring
2013, and the TV series that follows will be
shown in Sweden during 2014. Distribution
rights to Denmark, Norway and Finland are
confirmed so far.
In spring 2013, Norstedts will relaunch this
vintage crime gem with Maria Lang’s first
three books in new editions with imagery of
the 1950s. Three more will follow in autumn
Hans Koppel
Petter Lidbeck, born in 1964, lives in
Stockholm. Under the pseudonym Hans
Koppel he has previously published three
satirical novels about the Swedish middle
class of today.
Kommer aldrig mer igen/Never coming back
was his first thriller in a planned trilogy.
The stand alone sequel Kom ska vi tycka
om varandra/You’re Mine Now was published
in Sweden in October 2012 and the
third and final instalment of the series is
scheduled for autumn 2013.
Press voices for Hans Koppel
“Naturally Hans Koppel, alias Petter Lidbeck,
should use his swift-minded punchy
stile to write crime novels.” Dagens Nyheter
“Koppel is a very fine writer but it’s as a
machine perfectly designed to provoke compulsive
page-turning that makes this book
so sensational. I read it in two long sessions
and if you’re the sort of person who doesn’t
need much sleep, you’ll do it in one.”
Morning Star (UK)
“A supremely professional piece of work with
a palpable sense of tension, and couched in
unvarnished prose.” The Independent (UK)
“crisp and simple yet devastatingly effective,
this is an unrelenting, terrifying slab of
a psychological thriller which ticks all the
right boxes.” Daily Mirror (UK)
“There are some fine stories out there and
this is probably one of the best.”
612 ABC Brisbane Radio (AUS)
“It is exciting and there aren’t many superfluous
scenes here. It reminds me of Hitchcock’s
devilishly effective paranoia films /.../
Lidbeck/Koppel has a sure sense of style, not
least when it comes to a genre where most
Swedish thriller-writers fail: to write entertaining
and hard-hitting dialogue which also
moves the plot along.” Helsingborgs Dagblad
“An ice-cold and cleverly composed thriller
on guilt and revenge.” Sydsvenskan
“It is exciting from the first page to the last.
The author builds up an infernal and nailbiting
dramatic situation.” DAST Magazine
“If you like your books on the gritty and violent
side – it really isn’t pretty in that cellar
– then why not try this harrowing tale of
bitter revenge.”
Peterborough Evening Telegraph (UK)
“Hans Koppel’s crime thriller is skilfully
construed and sometimes really, really scary
/.../ Revenge is not just sweet; it can also be
very, very raw – which Hans Koppel proves
to me in his new thriller. /.../ I am sucked
into the exciting plot and can’t stop reading.
I want more, more, more.” The Book of the
Month, March 2011, Your Life Magazine
“A dense thriller of the suspenseful type
with an unexpected ending.” BTJ
“Hans Koppel’s thriller debut is not for the
faint of heart, because the Swedish author
understands superbly how to spread fear and
terror. He plays perfectly on the instruments
of the genre and keeps up the tension literally
until the last page.” Buchjournal (DE)
“Just 24 hours with a break of six hours sleep
– that’s all I needed to read Kommer aldrig
mer igen. Despite it being a 350-page thick
novel. But as soon as I had grabbed hold of
Hans Koppel’s debut novel, stopping was no
longer an option. The Scandinavian author
has achieved an incredibly engrossing
thriller that is selling like hot cakes in ten
countries already.” Berliner Kurier (DE)
“The detective novel is strongly reminiscent
of the fate of Natascha Kampusch, who was
also kidnapped and held prisoner in a small
basement room for more than 3 069 days by
her tormentors /.../ Hans Koppel presents in
his debut thriller a psychological novel that
skilfully mixes reality and fantasy into a dense
fabric.” Siegener Zeitung (DE)
Never Coming Back
A woman is held imprisoned just a stone’s throw
from her own home and she knows why: her past
has caught up with her. The revenge that strikes
her is cruel, drawn out and meticulously served.
Hans Koppel gives us a sharp, claustrophobic
page-turner.
It is Friday evening in Helsingborg in southern
Sweden. On her way home from work,
Ylva Zetterberg is stopped by a car. The
couple in the car looks familiar, people from
her childhood and youth in Stockholm, they
insist on giving her a lift home and despite
misgivings she gets into the car. When Ylva
wakes up, she finds herself in the couple’s
cellar. Through degrading treatment and
rape she is going to be taught that her life
is not worth living, just like the couple’s
daughter was taught many years ago, in the
company of Ylva and her friends. And just
like their daughter, her only way out of this
hell is to take her own life...
Meanwhile, Mike Zetterberg and daughter
Sanna wait next door. Where is Ylva, and
why isn’t she answering her phone? When
Ylva still hasn’t turned up the next morning,
Mike contacts the police but gets little help.
If she doesn’t show up within a day or so,
they make it clear that he will be considered
the most likely suspect of her disappearance.
On a TV screen in Ylva’s cellar, she can
see what happens outside her own home.
Through the lens of a web camera attached
to the house she is kept in, she can catch
glimpses of Mike and Sanna, how their
everyday life goes on in her absence. How
can she get them to understand that she is
there, just a stone’s throw away…
In Kommer aldrig mer igen Hans Koppel
paints, in his characteristically sharp prose,
a claustrophobic nightmare where evil deeds
– even those seemingly buried in the dust of
time – never go unpunished.
You’re Mine Now
International critics raved about Koppel’s crime
debut Kommer aldrig mer igen. Now he’s back
with another terrifying thriller that gets under
your skin.
Anna is living happily with her husband
and daughter outside the southern city of
Helsingborg. She and two of her female colleagues
– the power troika of the Family
Journal – are on a weekend conference to lay
the plans for the coming year.
After dinner, Anna is courted by an attractive
young man working at a local ad agency.
Unlike her two colleagues, Anna has never
been unfaithful, not even thought about it,
but Erik is 15 years younger, athletic and intensive,
and she simply falls for his charms.
It is the best sex Anna has ever had, but a
mistake, and she is immediately regretful.
She goes to Erik’s place to end their affair before
it goes any further, but ends up in bed
with him instead.
Anna tries to break up with Erik without
hurting his feelings, but he reacts with jealousy
and anger. Erik doesn’t care that she
has a husband and a daughter that she loves,
and soon the conversation is alarming Anna.
He will do anything to be with her, and the
lives of her loved ones are in danger.
Calle Collin – the journalist we met in Kommer
aldrig mer igen – plays a brief part in this
story too. The location in southern Sweden
also connects this novel with the first in
the series, but what ties them together even
more is the theme – Hans Koppel is back
with a new thrilling novel about actions and
consequences.
Michael Hjorth was born in 1963 in Visby.
He is one of Scandinavia’s most accomplished
screenwriters and producers, and
one of the founders of the internationally
successful production company Tre
Vänner.
Hans Rosenfeldt was born in 1964 in
Borås. He has written screenplays for
twenty drama series, including the international
success Bron/The Bridge, and has
hosted both radio and television shows.
The Sebastian Bergman Series
Michael Hjorth and Hans Rosenfeldt got off
to a flying start with the publication of their
debut Det fördolda in 2010. With psychologist
and profiler Sebastian Bergman – an
arrogant and narcissistic womanizer with a
personal trauma – in the lead role, Hjorth &
Rosenfeldt had created an instant success.
Months before Det fördolda was published
in Sweden, translation rights were sold to
nine countries. After the publication, to great
reviews, the novel could be found on the
bestseller list, where it remained for eight
months. So far Det fördolda has sold more
than 200 000 copies in Sweden.
Lärjungen was published in August 2011. This
second part in the series reveals to the readers
even more about Sebastian Bergman,
in a breathtaking roller coaster ride where
Sebastian is confronted with his past, and
with his nemesis. Since publication, Lärjungen
has sold more than 155 000 copies.
The third part of the series, Fjällgraven, was
published in October 2012 and has so far sold
more than 77 000 copies.
In Germany, the Sebastian Bergman series
has been even more successful than in Sweden;
since publication of the first German
translation in 2011, Hjorth & Rosenfeldt have
never left the top of the charts. So far, more
than 410 000 copies of the two first Sebastian
Bergman books have been sold in Germany
alone.
Rights to the Sebastian Bergman series have
been sold to 20 countries to this date.
Dark Secrets
It begins with a call to the police. A sixteen-yearold
boy, Roger, has gone missing, and his mother
is worried. After a few days he is found – in a
marsh, dead, and his heart has been cut out of
his body.
Sebastian Bergman, psychologist, criminal
profiler and one of Sweden’s top experts on
serial killers, is in Västerås to settle the estate
following the death of his mother. Sebastian
has completely withdrawn from police work
after the death of his wife and daughter in
the 2004 tsunami. He is emotionally cutoff,
depraved, and has relapsed into sexual
addiction to briefly fend off the memories of
his loss.
But the Crime Investigation Department
(CID) has taken over the case of the murdered
boy, and they need Sebastian Bergman’s
help. Reluctantly he finds himself, for the
first time in a long while, drawn into a murder
investigation. He becomes increasingly
involved in the case but he also has his own
highly personal reasons for wanting to be a
part of the CID team.
Det fördolda is an intelligent and riveting
story, impossible to let go of. Michael Hjorth
and Hans Rosenfeldt write with confidence
and with an authoritative tone that sets
the scene already in this book, their debut
novel which is the first in the series with the
unforgettable Sebastian Bergman in the lead
role.
The Disciple
In Lärjungen, the second instalment of the Sebastian
Bergman series, Sebastian is pitted
against his nemesis and the stakes have never
been higher.
Sebastian Bergman has found out that he has
a grown-up daughter and his life has been
given a new meaning. For the first time since
losing his wife Lily and daughter Sabine in
the tsunami on the beach of Khao Lak in
2004 he feels connected to another person.
He now struggles with the decision whether
he should reveal himself to her as her biological
father or if he should let their kinship
remain a secret. That she, Vanja, also
happens to be a member of the CID team
he worked with a while ago complicates the
situation further.
After stalking her for weeks, following her
moves from a distance, he realizes that the
only way he can be close to her, without the
risk of pushing her away, is by rejoining the
CID-team. But he is shocked when he discovers
the circumstances of the case they
are working on: a series of brutal murders of
women, down to the last detail exactly like
those committed by the serial killer Edward
Hinde, who Sebastian put behind bars many
years ago. But Hinde is still in jail, and under
strict guard, which means that they have a
copycat on their hands.
In Lärjungen, Sebastian Bergman is pitted
against his old nemesis, Edward Hinde, in a
dramatic and suspenseful race against time,
which keeps the reader captivated beyond
the final pages of the book. With a sharp
sense of style and an intelligent plot, Hjorth
& Rosenfeldt dement their reputation as the
hottest new crime authors on the Scandinavian
market.
The Mountain Grave
Two women are hiking in the mountains of Jämtland
in the North of Sweden. It’s autumn and
it’s raining hard, and when one of them slips
close to a raging torrent, they make a macabre
discovery: the hand of a skeleton protruding
from the river bank.
The local police arrive at the scene and soon
find that there is more than one body buried
in the ground. When the area is fully excavated,
six bodies have been found; four adults
and two children. The Crime Investigation
Department (CID) is called in, and Sebastian
Bergman travels to Jämtland along with
the rest of the team.
On site, it is quickly established that the six
were buried at the same time, although the
state of the remains differ. Two of the bodies
can be easily identified as a Dutch couple
who were reported missing in November
2003. The others are a mystery – their DNA
prove that they are a family, but no family
had been reported missing that autumn. A
lot of things don’t quite add up for the CID
team.
Sebastian has enjoyed a new-found closeness
with Vanja after saving her life from Edward
Hinde. But when he hears that she might
be moving abroad he is horrified, and decides
to do everything he can to stop it. Vanja
still doesn’t know that Sebastian is her real
father, but maybe there is someone else on
the team who does…
In Fjällgraven, we follow profiler and psychologist
Sebastian Bergman and his colleagues
in the CID team again. In a thrilling pursuit
of the truth, they are up against powerful
forces that are willing to go to the ends of
the earth to make sure that their secret agenda
– and mistakes – remain secret.
Robert Kviby
Robert Kviby, born 1976, is a full-time
writer and lives in Stockholm. Previously
he has worked as a market manager in a
major media company. De korrupta was
his literary debut and the first title in the
series about Annie and Max Lander.
The Lander Series
“They were all prostitutes. All under thirty.
Found in wooded areas and parks. Naked. They
had been killed elsewhere and dumped where
their bodies were discovered. She was convinced
it was systematic. All four of them had met the
same man, and it had led to their deaths.”
In 2012, Robert Kviby made his literary debut
with the crime novel De korrupta, where
we meet the married couple Annie and Max
Lander. Through Annie’s journalistic investigations
and her strong character, Annie and
Max end up as pawns in a corrupt game run
between powerful corporate magnates and
the Yugoslavian mafia. Since publication, De
korrupta has sold more than 32 000 copies.
In the sequel, Listan, we follow Annie and
Max again on their crusade against the corrupt.
False accusations have been keeping
them on the run and away from their loved
ones for years. In their pursuit of the truth,
they find evidence of how multi-national
companies benefit from horrible crimes
of war, raising the stakes of the game even
more. Will they finally be able to clear their
names?
The Lander Series serves a thrilling read
from the first page and on.
In 1769, Carl von Linné’s disciple Daniel Solander
makes a remarkable discovery during his
voyage around the world with Captain Cook.
In New Zealand, Solander finds a stone with
extraordinary properties that challenges
his masters view of nature, and it is therefore
hidden away. The stone breaks into four
pieces, and during the course of history the
pieces end up in the hands of, among others,
Niels Bohr, Greta Garbo and Joseph Stalin.
More than 200 years later, student Ida Nordlund
receives a strange phone call from her
grandmother Alma in Moscow. Alma asks Ida
to look after a box, which she will receive at
the Nobel Award ceremony. But something
goes wrong and the courier bringing the box
dies under spectacular circumstances. Soon
Ida is sought not only by the police, but also
norstedts
by a secret network of scientists who are willing
to do anything to obtain the enigmatic
box.
Ida makes an abrupt escape from Stockholm
and seeks help from her foster dad Lasse.
Together they are chased in a thriller-like
tempo through northern Sweden, through
Finland, and finally they end up in Russia,
with Grandma Alma, who is carrying a dark
secret.
What kind of stone did Solander find? What
did Linné hide inside those freshwater pearl
mussels in the north of Finland? And why
was Ida deserted by her mother Eva, who disappeared
so many years ago?
Prepare for an adventure out of the ordinary.
