Altenau (with District of Torfhaus)

With the expression "Altenau... da, wo der Pfeffer wächst!", a cheeky

German pun, and an interesting programme of organised events, this

formerly free mining town was awarded a prize in a statewide competition.

Since then "der Würzel" (a fi gure planted with herbs) has been

a popular item in Altenau.

Europe's largest herb park with spice gallery and pagoda of

spices, the private gardens along the "Altenau Herb Trail" and the

mountain meadows show the importance of herbs and spices for this

mining town.

A health spa with a therapeutic climate, it is a central starting

point for hikes of varying degrees of diffi culty, such as the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg

Hiking Trail. From the District of Torfhaus, which is located in

the Harz Mountains National Park, it is only about 8 km on the Goethe

Trail up through unspoilt nature to the summit of Mount Brocken.

In Altenau mountain bike lovers get on the over 1,800 km of marked

routes of the Volksbank-Arena Harz.

With its thermal saltwater bath and sauna landscape spa, bons vivants

fi nd the KRISTALL "Heißer Brocken" sauna inviting to relax and

pamper themselves.

Other leisure activities available in Altenau include the DSV Nordic

Aktiv Walking Centre, cross-country skiing trails, ski and toboggan

lifts and the Waldschwimmbad Okerteich [Okerteich Forest

Setting Swimming Pool].

And genuine Altenau beers are to be had from the only private

brewery in the Upper Harz Mountains.

UPPER HARZ MOUNTAINS

Clausthal-Zellerfeld

A university town and mining town, formerly with special

rights, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, which is also a government-certifi ed

therapeutic-climate health resort, is the central town in the Upper

Harz Mountains. During any season the surrounding landscape is

inviting for wide-ranging leisure activities: hiking, Nordic walking,

horseback riding, cycling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing,

biathlon and tobogganing in winter.

Being a university town, it boasts diverse cultural offerings. It's

shopping street, Adolph-Roemer-Strasse, extends from the impressive

towers of the Holy Ghost Parish Church, Germany's largest

wooden church, to a centrally located square, Kronenplatz.

The signifi cant technical and cultural history of the region is shown

at the Oberharzer Bergwerksmuseum [Upper Harz Mountains

Mining Museum], the oldest mining museum in Germany,

which is located in the Zellerfeld district.

In the immediate vicinity, the visual impression of this part of town

is set by imposing community centres such as the Dietzelhaus,

which, with its artistically carved faces is also called the "decorated

mountain chemist" or "chemist of grotesque faces",

and not least the St. Salvatoris Church, the altar of which was

designed by Werner Tübke.

Every Thursday in summer the street Bornhardtstraße turns into

the lively Upper Harz Mountain Farmers' Market between

the Oberharzer Bergwerksmuseum and the Kunsthandwerkerhof

[Artists-Craftsman Courtyard] in the Alte Münze.

UPPER HARZ MOUNTAINS

Schulenberg

Schulenberg, a climatic health resort is situated picturesquely

on the very branched out Oker Reservoir. The town sprang from

the waters, so to speak. It came into being when in 1954 Lower

and Mid-Schulenberg were fl ooded by the Oker Reservoir so that

the reservoir planned could be constructed. Since then a mysterious

legend has lingered that the tip of the church spire of the

town that went under can be seen occasionally and that the tolling

of its bell can be heard now and again. On exciting underwater

dives you can get to the bottom of the question as to what

really remains of the former towns.

Especially in summer the Oker Reservoir is an attractive draw

for ramblers, skaters and above all aquatics enthusiasts. They can

sail, windsurf, swim or go on canoeing tours on the lake. In addition,

the shipping company Okersee-Schifffahrt offers beautiful

outings on the lake all year round.

Landlubbers also get their money's worth in and around Schulenberg.

The town is inviting for tennis and golfi ng on the training

facility, the varied landscape surrounding it for rock climbing, hiking

and mountain biking. In the Bike Alpine, a lift conveniently

takes mountain bikers up to the 645-metre high Wiesenberg. From

there it's downhill over four different descents: Downhill, Freeride,

Bikercross and Dirt Slopestyle. In total, 62 routes and the 1,800

km that are part of the Volksbank-Arena Harz are available to

keen mountain bikers.

The rocky landscape of the Oker Valley is a true highlight for rock

climbing enthusiasts.

UPPER HARZ MOUNTAINS

Wildemann

Wildemann is one of the seven former Upper Harz Mountains

mining towns (formerly with special rights) which owe their creation

to mining. Today, a graphic impression of the working conditions

underground is provided by a mine open to visitors, the

"19-Lachter-Stollen", which means "19-Lachter Tunnel", (a

Lachter having been an old dimension in mining, with 1 Lachter

equalling 1.92 m). The legendary individual this climatic resort and

Kneipp spa is named after was a "wild man", to which a bronze

statue in the centre of the town is dedicated.

The wild/romantic mining town (formerly with special rights) lies

nestled between Innerste Valley and Spiegel Valley. In the

charming natural landscape you can enjoy rest and relaxation.

All around Wildemann you'll fi nd beautiful hiking trails and

quiet side valleys, in which clear brooks fl ow and idyllic ponds

invite you to linger.

Water-striding and dew-walking facilities give you an opportunity

to preserve your health. A wide range of activities are offered all

year round, such as: Nordic walking, mountain biking (link to the

Volksbank-Arena Harz), iron tossing, inline skating, swimming, cycling,

tobogganing and cross-country skiing.

Highlights that will make your stay unforgettable include:

Winter(s)paß [Winter (fun) Pass] (5th to 9th calendar week), the

Nordic Walking Half Marathon in January and September, the

Easter bonfi re on Easter Saturday, Walpurgisnacht [Walpurgis

Night] on 1 May, the driving of the cattle to pasture on Whit

Sunday and Fahrraderlebnistag [Bicycle Experience Day] (carfree

Innerste Valley) at the end of August.

UPPER HARZ MOUNTAINS

Motorbike Holidays

in the Upper Harz

Mountains

The time has passed when the Harz Mountains were only a place for

outings by families and hikers. Today the Upper Harz Mountains region

in particular is a paradise for bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts.

Be it the tempting rides on sharp-curves and winding roads of

the most northerly of Germany's low mountain ranges or the motorbike-friendly

accommodations – the Upper Harz Mountains are

purely and simply the draw for motorcyclists from all over Germany.

In the Upper Harz Mountains motorcyclists can prove their skills in the

saddle on quite a number of mountain routes and meet kindred spirits

at nearly every parking area along the uphill and downhill routes. The

meet-up place for bikers at Torfhaus, for example, is famous.

Day for day numerous motorcyclists will be found at this large-scale

parking area at an altitude of 812 metres (directly on the main road,

Bundestrasse 4, between Bad Harzburg and Braunlage with a direct

view of Mount Brocken).

Some accommodations and campgrounds in the Upper Harz Mountains

also make special offerings that bear in mind the wishes of each

and every motorcyclist – from secure parking sheds for that beloved

bike to the providing of accessories for motorbike care and a

proper biker supper with steaks and Harz Mountain sausage.

Incidentally: Sankt Andreasberg is especially popular with sidecar drivers.

Among other things, the Winter Sidecar Driver Meet-up takes

place during the Winter Festival in January.

Holidays

with

your Dog

The nicest time of the year, your holidays, you shouldn't spend without your

best friend. Especially not if it has chosen the Harz Mountains as its favourite

playground. Running and romping in such great natural surroundings,

both man and dog get their money's worth.

In the Upper Harz Mountains, guests with dogs fi nd very nice, dog-friendly

accommodations. Here your four-legged friends are allowed to come with

you indoors, or nice "dog rooms" are provided. Often your host will also

offer a large outdoor area on which, for example, training can be done with

the dogs.

The fi rst dog forest in the Harz Mountains was established in Wildemann

in April 2009. This is a large, fenced-in outdoor area in the forest, in which

dogs can run freely to their heart's content—a new meet-up for dog lovers

from near and far.

If you would like to fi nd a special dog-friendly accommodation suited

to your needs, then consult the Upper Harz Mountains Tourist Information

UPPER HARZ MOUNTAINS

Organised events in the

Upper Harz Mountains

JANUARY

The Upper Harz Mountains traditionally

celebrate the winter in January. Those who

have spent their Christmas holidays up in

the Harz Mountains still enjoy the snow after

the big New Year's Eve parties and winter

markets, such as in Altenau and Sankt

Andreasberg. With good winter sport conditions,

in the middle of the month the tobogganing

done en masse in Clausthal is

very inviting. At the end of January there

is the popular Winter Festival in Sankt Andreasberg

with the legendary winter sidecar

driver meet-up for hard-boiled motorcycle

fans from all over Europe.

FEBRUAR

A special highlight of the winter sports

season, not least on account of the huge

success of the Upper Harz Mountains

biathletes, Daniel Böhm and Arnd Peiffer,

German Biathlon Championships for

youths and juniors in Clausthal-Zellerfeld

on 26.-28 Feb 2010. On 13 and 14 February

2010 the International Sled Dog Race

will again be held in Clausthal-Zellerfeld.

Ideal for all active guests is the Bruchberg

cross-country skiing event open to

the general public in the skiing stadium

at Tischlertal/Altenau on 28 Feb 2010.

Just register and join in the skiing. From

the end of January until the beginning of

March, the Wildemanner Winterspaß

[Wildemann Winter Fun] offers winter

sport items and a cultural winter

programme in Wildemann

for the entire family on a

daily basis.

MARCH

If the winter last until March, the Harz

Mountains also delight in the spring break.

Your winter sport heart! A clear advantage

for the people of Hamburg, who can get

to our most beautiful skiing areas in just

over a two-hour drive or comfortably by

train. That is the time to relish, because

the cross-country skiing circuits and the

slopes are still ideal, and you simply have

more space. In addition, the Winter Ball in

Sankt Andreasberg on 6 March beckons

with lavish celebrating in the romance of

winter.

APRIL

Shrouded in legend, this is probably the

most mystical month in the Harz Mountains,

for it ends with the big Walpurgis

celebrations. On 30 April, usually already

in the afternoon, the festivals begin for

children in the health resort gardens,

such as in Clausthal, in Altenau and in

Sankt Andreasberg. In the evening things

then really get lively, because the guests

are also allowed to dress up as witches

and devils. The Walpurgis celebrations

offer different programmes, depending

on the town. Whereas in Altenau dancing

and music are the focus of attention, tion,

in Sankt Andreasberg the highlight t is

defi nitely the performance of Walpurr-

gis Night from Goethe's Faust with

actors from the region. It ends at

midnight with the crowning of the

May Queen and usually goes on

until the early morning.

MAY

Every Thursday from 1 May until 30 October

the popular Upper Harz Mountain

Farmers' Market takes place on Bornhardtstrasse

in Clausthal with many specialities

of the region, arts and crafts and

lively goings-on.

Since 2009 the Harz Roller Festival, the

subject of which are the canary bird and

the famous cheese, has had a fi xed place

on the event calendar in Sankt Andreasberg.

On 15 May the second festival of

this type awaits you all around the Harz

Roller Canary Museum. Just two days

prior to it, one should not miss the Harz

Mountain Farmers' Festival.

And fi nally, on 16 May your outing destination

should be the famous Upper Harz

Mountains Mining Museum, because on

the International Day of the Museum this

exciting Museum takes part with varied

offerings. On Whitsun the famous and

traditional driving of the cattle to pasture

takes place in Wildemann with a colourful

programme – one of the major highlights

of the year.

On top of this, May is geared to mountain

biking in the Upper Harz Mountains,

because the MTB CUP is held annually

in Altenau. On the weekends prior to the

event, mountain bikers can also participate

in several guided training workouts on the

actual MTB marathon route.

May concludes with Nature Protection

Day on the 29th and the ceremonies for

the day of the death of Robert Koch, the

most famous son of the mining town of

Clausthal-Zellerfeld.

JUNE

While Clausthal-Zellerfeld holds another

sporting highlight, the Lower Saxon

Summer Biathlon Championships, on

13 June Sankt Andreasberg celebrates

the Meadow Flower Festival, a traditional

event to do with the famous and

protected mountain meadows and their

herbs, all accompanied by the driving of

the cattle out to pasture. This is a colourful

and absorbing festival full of regional

culture. The local communities also celebrate

the traditional Johannisfest, a

midsummer festival, on 24 June with lots

of music. From 19 Jun until 18 Jul you are

invited to attend the MARUNDE Exhibition

in Sankt Andreasberg.

JULY

In mid-July compete with other guests and

locals in the comical "Kräuterolympiade"

["Herbs Olympics"] in Altenau, the location

of Europe's largest herb park, before

the Schützenfest [Marksmen's Festival] in

Altenau brings together locals and holidaymakers.

2010 is the 100th anniversary of the mining

of the last ton of ore in the Samson Pit.

From 2-4 July a number of special events

also take place in Sankt Andreasberg.

AUGUST

Things continue in a traditional vein in late

summer, fi rst with the Yodelling Competition

in the health resort gardens in Clausthal-Zellerfeld

(1 Aug) as well as Vieh- und Weidetag

[Cattle and Pasture Day] in Buntenbock

with lots of colourful offerings and the Lichterfest

[Festival of Lights] in the Okerteich

Forest Swimming Pool in Altenau (7 Aug).

The month begins with the Marksmen's Fe-

stival Parade in Sankt Andreasberg (1 Aug),

the 2nd ADAC Sidecar Driver Meet-up and

Spechtelnacht, an observatory event on 6-8

August. The month then concludes with the

big Schützenfest [Marksmen's Festival] in

the tranquil little town of Buntenbock.

SEPTEMBER

This month is all about Hubertus, the

patron saint of hunters, bellowing stags

and art. From 11 until 19 September the

14th Altenauer Hubertus Week will take

place in Altenau. Here everything revolves

round stags and the fl ora and fauna of the

Harz Mountains National Park. In Sankt

Andreasberg the Kunstherbst [Autumn of

Art] begins in Sankt Andreasberg at the

Rathausscheune as well as at other event

locations with international artists covering

all aspects of the theme of "Child of

Nature". On 25 and 26 September all nature

lovers with a fervour to discover are

attracted to Clausthal with its big Harz

Mountains Minerals and Fossils Market.

OCTOBER

By now at the latest the forest up here has

exploded into a true fi reworks of colour, inspiring

not only artists but also holidaymakers

into all sorts of creativity and intellectual

exchange. On 10 October in Wildemann all

hiking enthusiasts meet up for the German-

Danish Hiking day, to which numerous

guests from the High North are expected in

the Harz Mountains.

NOVEMBER

Christmas feelings can already be felt

earlier on here, because often the winter

will already have set in. The landscape

becomes shrouded in a vast white blanket,

magically creating wonderful settings

against a radiant blue, the fi rst Christmas

feelings awakening in the evenings with

the glistening and the lights. Now is the

time for relaxation, savouring and peace

and quiet. Go to our beautiful restaurants,

cosy accommodations and the temples

of well-being, such as KRISTALL "Heißer

Brocken", a thermal spa in Altenau. At the

end of the month the fi rst Christmas markets

beckon, such as in Sankt Andreasberg,

with lots of romantic spirit.

DECEMBER

This should not be missed!

The Stag Call Championships

on 25 Sep 2010

in Sankt Andreasberg

Snow and sun aplenty will hopefully be

the line-up again this year. Take advantage

of the healthy climate of the Upper

Harz Mountains, the luxuriant natural surroundings

and the large offering of winter

sports, and come to us even before the

Christmas holidays. The transport links are

excellent, and the winter fun very good

even for a day trip. One should defi nitely

schedule a visit to one of the most beautiful

Christmas markets in the region, in

Goslar. Those who then want to spend

their Christmas or New Year's holidays

with us should make use of this magazine

and book reservations for accommodations

as early as possible.
