um) were fabricated using a buried grating<br />

with epitaxial regrowth. 3 mm-long highreflectivity<br />

coated lasers exhibit output powers<br />

of above 100 mW at room temperature under<br />

continuous-wave mode. Single-mode emissions<br />

with side-mode suppression ratios of >25<br />

operation is demonstrated with a novel<br />

composite cavity configuration incorporating<br />

a semiconductor optical amplifier. An interleaver<br />

was used in the fiber laser cavity to<br />

achieve more than 24 wavelength oscillations<br />

with a frequency separation of 100 GHz.<br />

The laser exhibits reduced linewidths and a<br />

signal-to-spontaneous-noise ratio of 35<br />

dB, and the total output power is about 10<br />

We reported the novel laser diode (LD)<br />

structure with double bend waveguide to<br />

satisfy both high-power and stable single<br />

mode operation. High-power single mode<br />

operation in double bend waveguide InAs/<br />

GaAs quantum dot (QD) LDs was demonstrated<br />

for the first time. LDs with 10-μm<br />

stripe width exhibit single lateral mode in<br />

continuous wave and a kink-free output<br />

power of 310 mW with an external efficiency<br />

of 0.34 W/A without facet coating for antiand<br />

high-reflection. To the best of our<br />

knowledge, this is one of the high values<br />

of power level that has been reported in<br />

single mode QD LDs so far.<br />

communications. The optical multi-hop technology<br />

is the best candidate to improve<br />

system capacity and outage probability.<br />

performance was measured. The evaluated<br />

of 1.25Gbps.<br />

We have developed a new 3D projection<br />

display system using two separate screens<br />

each of which displays the near and far<br />

images, respectively. The front screen consists<br />

of a diffuse-reflective polarizing film (DRPF),<br />

and the far image on the rear screen is seen<br />

undisturbed through the front screen. The<br />

new 3D display system is eyestrain-free<br />

because no misfit between accommodation<br />

and convergence is experienced during<br />

watching the displayed images.<br />

In this presentation, we show the fundamentals<br />

of heterostructures in two-dimensional<br />

photonic-crystal (PC) slabs and their applications<br />

to ultrahigh-Q nanocavities. We<br />

show experimentally photonic nanocavities<br />

with ultra-high Q factors (~1,200,000) by<br />

constructing photonic double heterostructures.<br />

These nanocavities are important not only<br />

in the development of various photonic<br />

applications but also for advancing our<br />

knowledge of photonic heterostructures.<br />

T1D-2 생체내 비침습성 형광분광 진단 기술<br />

The fluorescence emanating from a turbid<br />

medium contains information about scattering,<br />

absorption and the intrinsic fluorescence<br />

(fluorescence only due to fluorophores). We<br />

conducted experiments to examine the<br />

influence of scattering and absorption on<br />

the experimentally measured fluorescence<br />

of a turbid medium such as biological<br />

tissue. Therefore, we acquired fluorescence<br />

and reflectance spectra of tissue phantoms,<br />

human oral tissue and colon tissue with a<br />

wide range of scatterer and absorber concentrations.<br />

By applying a photon migration<br />

model, which uses the scattering and absorption<br />

information contained in reflectance<br />

spectra to remove their distortion also<br />

present in fluorescence spectra, we extract<br />

the intrinsic fluorescence of these tissue<br />

models. We achieved excellent agreement<br />

between modeled and actual intrinsic fluorescence<br />

spectra.<br />

This paper aims to enhance the contrast of<br />

laser speckle images. To achieve the aim,<br />

we suggest a new method using optical<br />

clearing agent, glycerol. The glycerol was<br />

topically applied on the porcine skin sample<br />

under which saline solution flow through a<br />

tubing in a constant speed. We observed<br />

the enhancement of optical clearing of skin<br />

and of the contrast of speckle image due<br />

to the reduction of scattering properties.<br />

dimensional photoni crystal nanocavity with<br />

InAs quantum dots, which have a good<br />

vertical beaming property. We have performed<br />

the micro-photoluminescence measurement<br />

We demonstrate a thermo-optic tuning technique<br />

of chirp rates with uniform and chirped<br />

Bragg gratings embedded in polymeric waveguides<br />

providing polarization insensitive<br />

reflection band and large thermo-optic<br />

coefficient. Linear temperature gradients<br />

applied along the waveguides induce the<br />

effective refractive index gradients of guided<br />

modes that lead to chirps in the uniform<br />

grating, and to change chirp rates in the<br />

chirped grating. By controlling the temperature<br />

gradients along the 3 cm waveguides,<br />

dispersions in the range of ±200 ps/nm are<br />

tuned within the temperature gradient less<br />

than 12˚C/cm. The large dispersion tuning<br />

range with the small temperature gradient is<br />

a unique property of the polymeric waveguides<br />

due to the large thermo-optic coefficient.<br />

The device has been fabricated on a flexible<br />

polymer substrate utilizing a post lift-off<br />

process which could provide excellent uniformity<br />

of grating pattern on a plastic film.<br />

The grating pattern is formed by exposing<br />

the laser interference on a photoresist then<br />

inscribed by O2 plasma etching. Uniformity<br />

of grating pattern is improved by using<br />

black matrix polymer which reduces the<br />

Moiré pattern occurred by the reflected<br />

wave passed through thick polymer layers.<br />

The selective adhesion property of SU-8<br />

material for Au and Si surfaces is utilized to<br />

prepare 100-um thick plastic substrate. Single<br />

mode waveguide is fabricated on the plastic<br />

substrate using the polymer materials with<br />

refractive indices of 1.455 and 1.430 for the<br />

core and the cladding layers, respectively.<br />

The Bragg grating on plastic substrate does<br />

not show any degradation on its spectral<br />

response compared to reference sample<br />

made on silicon wafer.<br />

A photonic microwave (MW) channel selective<br />

filter was demonstrated incorporating a 1x2<br />

switch based on two tunable polymeric<br />

resonators with different free spectral ranges.<br />

When the channel centered at 10 GHz was<br />

chosen, the extinction ratio was ~30 dB, the<br />

bandwidth 1 GHz, and the electrical power<br />

consumption 4.1 mW. And for the other<br />

channel located at 20 GHz, we have achieved<br />

the extinction ratio of ~30 dB, the bandwidth<br />

of 2 GHz, and the required power of<br />

8.0 mW. Finally the crosstalk between the<br />

selected and blocked channels was higher<br />

than 24 dB.<br />

A widely tunable coupled-ring reflector<br />

(CRR) based on planar polymer waveguide<br />

is fabricated and the characteristics are<br />

measured. The ring radii for two coupled<br />

rings are designed to be slightly different to<br />

achieve wide tuning using Vernier effect.<br />

Strong reflections are observed at the wavelength<br />

at which both rings are resonant.<br />

Wide tuning is achieved using low current<br />

level as small as a few tens mA.<br />

The Solc filtering characteristics were investigated<br />

according to waveguide-mode condition<br />

in a periodically poled Ti:LiNbO3 (Ti:PPLN)<br />

waveguide. The quality of the quasi-phasematching<br />

(QPM) grating and the waveguide<br />

was measured by second-harmonic generation<br />

and low-finesse method. We have observed<br />

thesingleandthedualwavelengthfiltering<br />

in the Solc filter depending on waveguidemode<br />

and analyzed various filtering behaviors.<br />

We discuss wavelength initialization method<br />

for the Bragg-grating based tunable external<br />

cavity laser that has been developed for its<br />

use in the WDM-PON. In this paper, we<br />

propose a novel, but simple method of<br />

wavelength initialization, without using lookup<br />

table. This proposed method provides the<br />

accuracy such that the wavelengths are<br />

initialized within 0.5 nm from the designated<br />

ones, which is enough to be used in the<br />

WDM-PON with 200GHz wavelength spacing.<br />

The effects of tunability of 3R wavelength<br />

converters (3R-WCs) on WDM mesh network<br />

with finite signal impairment threshold (SIT)<br />

are presented. The blocking probability of<br />

routing and wavelength assignment (RWA)<br />

was calculated with the change of network<br />

resources. We find that severe reduction of<br />

the tuning range of 3R-WCs hardly affects<br />

the network performance.<br />

(ASE) noise is evaluated using the Karhunene<br />

traditional diffraction-based method. And<br />

We investigated alignment of liquid crystal<br />

on amorphous SiOC film surfaces deposited<br />

at the room temperature and irradiated by<br />

the atomic beam. We found by the electrostatic<br />

force microscopy data that the vertical<br />

alignment can be achieved when the electric<br />

potential roughness is high at the SiOC film<br />

surface. We suggest that Coulomb interaction<br />

between liquid crystal molecules and the<br />

ionized film surface has a dominant effect<br />

upon liquid crystal alignment on inorganic<br />

film surfaces by the low-energy ion beam<br />

exposure.<br />

In this paper, we investigated optical properties<br />

of a photopolymer OminDex 700serise<br />

for holographic application at the 532nm<br />

wavelength. To achieve the high diffraction<br />

efficiencies in optical system, we measured<br />

a exposure energy and a incident angle for<br />

a maximum diffraction efficiency of the<br />

material. Maximum diffraction efficiency was<br />

measured at beam intensity ratio of 1:1. The<br />

performance and the optical characteristics<br />

of the material will discussed in detail.<br />

In order to record the polarization gratings,<br />

polarization-sensitive materials, in which<br />

linear birefringence is induced by irradiating<br />

the polarized light, are necessary. In this<br />

paper, we investigated polarization properties<br />

of a photopolymer. We checked orthogonal<br />

and independence of laser. The value of the<br />

photoinduced linear polarization had effect<br />

on diffraction properties in the holographic<br />

gratings.<br />

We report a new method of fabrication of<br />

helicoidal long-period fiber gratings by<br />

twisting a single mode fiber with CO2 laser<br />

beam. Detailed fabrication method and the<br />

operation principles of proposed helicoidal<br />

long period fiber gratings are described and<br />

the transmission characteristics were experimentally<br />

demonstrated. Also, we have<br />

developed a new type of all- fiber band<br />

rejection filter consists of helicoidal longperiod<br />

fiber grating pair of opposite helicities,<br />

which provides highly flexible spectral control<br />

over the rejection bandwidth. The proposed<br />

device enables the unique rejection bandwidth<br />

tuning over more than 14 nm at the<br />

rejection level of 15 dB, with low insertion<br />

loss and polarization dependent loss by<br />

adjusting torsion stress.<br />

A sinusoidal phase modulator is inserted in<br />

the linear cavity, which suppresses the<br />

mode competition due to the homogeneous<br />

line broaden in Erbium-doped fiber. Simultaneous<br />

multi-wavelength lasing is observed<br />

with 0.45 nm intervals defined by the<br />

periodical filter. There are 9 lasing lines in<br />

power differences less than 10 dB and the<br />

side-mode suppression ratio is higher than<br />

25 dB.<br />

of transmission spectra was associated with<br />

of silica glass are very attractive for a<br />

high-average-power laser medium. We have<br />

been developing a new laser medium based<br />

on silica glass, and we have discovered a<br />

new infrared emission from a bismuth-doped<br />

silica glass.<br />

of lateral misalignments and optical beam<br />

size on the coupling efficiency has been<br />

analyzed. The numerical analysis shows<br />

that the device improve the lateral misalignment<br />

tolerance compared to straight single<br />

scanning range of MEMS filter, reducing<br />

linearity error between the polynomial fitted<br />

Semiconductor nanocrystals (Quantum dots)<br />

have many unique electronic and optical<br />

properties induced by the quantum confinement<br />

effects when the size of nanocrystals<br />

is comparable or smaller than the<br />

Bohr exciton radii. Unlike II-VI semiconductor<br />

QDs, those made of IV-VI lead chalcogenides<br />

such as PbS, PbSe and PbTe, have narrow<br />

bandgap energies and large exciton Bohr<br />

radii. Thus, this type of quantum dots is<br />

important for the fundamental study of<br />

strong quantum confinement effect, which<br />

can not be realized by other quantum dots<br />

made of wide bandgap semiconductors.<br />

Furthermore, effective bandgap can be tuned<br />

from Mid-IR to visible range. Thus, quantum<br />

dots made of lead chalcogenides have<br />

potentials for tunable IR-lasers, broadband<br />

amplifiers and solar cells. This works reports<br />

optical properties and potential applications<br />

of lead chalcogenide quantum dots embedded<br />

in glasses. Quantum dots were precipitated<br />

through heat-treatment, and its size was<br />

controlled by changing the heat-treatment<br />

condition such as heat-treatment temperature<br />

and time. Optical properties of lead chalcogenide<br />

quantum dots thus prepared were<br />

characterized by absorption and luminescence<br />

spectroscopy. Tunable absorption and emission<br />

between 1~2 μm was achieved, and full<br />

width of half maximum (FWHM) intensity<br />

was of >150 nm. Potentials for broadband<br />

optical amplification will be discussed.<br />

was manufactured by using TEOS as a<br />

reduction agent in Au containing doping<br />

solution during MCVD process. The absorption<br />

peak appeared at 490 nm was attributed to<br />

the surface plasmon resonance of the<br />

incorporated Au nano-particles in the core,<br />

and the nonlinear refractive index, n2, of the<br />

fiber was found to be 2.96 ~1.27×10-16<br />

m2/W at the pump power from 12 to 100<br />

mW.<br />

The PQR laser with ultra-low threshold<br />

current and sharp discrete multei-mode<br />

properties can outdo conventional LEDs.<br />

We have confirmed many advantages of low<br />

injection, high efficiency, high frequency<br />

PQR arrays over the conventional LEDs. We<br />

also extended our PQR work to blue wavelength<br />

regions. To be specific, we fabricated<br />

blue PQR arrays using the GaN wafer with<br />

N type AlGaN/GaN DBRs for higher reflectivity.<br />

The present preliminary studies sere<br />

encouraginginthatthebluePQRregionis<br />

still much brighter than the LED background<br />

region. We will soon get more inproved<br />

characteristics if we fabricate blue PQRs<br />

from GaN wafer with properly grown DBRs<br />

and without sapphire substrate.<br />

APD (CMOS-APD) indicates that rf-peaking<br />

in the photodetection frequency response is<br />

due to resonance caused by appearance of<br />

inductive components in avalanche region.<br />

Utilizing this rf-peaking, 3-dB bandwidth of<br />

CMOS-APD can be extended.<br />

polarization switching dynamics of a 1.5 μm<br />

emitting laser (VCSEL) under external optical<br />

injection control. Controlling the polarization<br />

direction and detuning the wavelength of<br />

the external injection laser beam causes<br />

dynamical instability and polarization switching<br />

of the VCSEL. A well-defined polarization<br />

switching has been demonstrated<br />

with the 1.5 μm VCSEL modulated at 1 MHz<br />

with a RF pulse amplitude of 0.5 V and with<br />

a DC driving current of 1.9 mA under an<br />

external optical injection of – 16.56 dBm<br />

We investigaed highly reliable GaN_based<br />

light emitting diodes with the floating guardring<br />

in order to improve the electrostatic<br />

dischare problem. The floating guard-ring<br />

(FGR) was introduced between p- and n-<br />

electrodes. This greatly waken the peak<br />

electric field intensity at the local position<br />

of around p-n junction, which in turn<br />

improves the maximum ESD voltage without<br />

the breakdown. We experimentally observed<br />

that LEDs with FGR showed about 5 times<br />

larger ESD voltages compared to those of<br />

LEDs without FGR<br />

We fabricated an arrayed waveguide grating<br />

(AWG) demultiplexer using UV embossing<br />

process for optical fiber communication<br />

systems and photonic integrated circuits.<br />

UV curable polymers (ZPU 12-47 and ZPU<br />

12-45) were used as the core and upper<br />

cladding layers. The polydimethylsiloxane<br />

(PDMS) mold used for the embossing<br />

process is manufactured by a photoresist<br />

structure formed on a silicon wafer. We tried<br />

the embossing onto a fused silica glass<br />

using the PDMS mold. The upper cladding<br />

layer was coated over the patterned structure.<br />

The residual layer produced after an embossingprocesswasadjustedbythevolume<br />

of polymer droplet. The embossing technique<br />

will have the potential for broad applications<br />

in fabrication of photonic devices.<br />

Image-restoration method in full-field optical<br />

coherence tomography (FF-OCT) using two<br />

interference fringe-images was demonstrated.<br />

By using both the original and the phaseshifted<br />

images, we could remove DC noise<br />

and obtained demodulated signals (envelope<br />

signals) from interference fringe-images.<br />

With the proposed image-restoration method,<br />

we demonstrated en-face imaging performance<br />

of the implemented FF-OCT system<br />

by presenting a piece of grape.<br />

generate four pulse signals, which are the<br />

CCD-driving pulses. Using this Fourier<br />

Domain optical measurement system, the<br />

distance value between the reference mirror<br />

and the sample mirror can be obtained<br />

phase-shifting interferometry. Using Michelson<br />

interferometer we obtain digital interferograms<br />

on CCD device. Displacement reconstruction<br />

The doping mechanism of doped ZnO films<br />

was studied by XRD and X-ray photoelectron<br />

spectroscopy. Doping mechanism<br />

of p-type ZnO films has been suggested<br />

into two different models of complex doping<br />

model and simple model depending on<br />

substituting dopants into group II atomic<br />

site or group VI atomic site. In complex<br />

model, As ions were substituted Zn 2+ sites<br />

in the ZnO films while some of P atomic ions<br />

were substituted into O site in ZnO thin<br />

films. The carrier concentration, hole mobility<br />

and resistivity of p-type ZnO have been<br />

was fully derived for the first time within our<br />

by use of a mach-zehnder modulator. Base<br />

station for uplink transmits 1.25Gbps wireless<br />

signal using a reflective semiconductor optical<br />

amplifier. We demonstrate the error free<br />

transmission for up and downlink wireless<br />

signals of 1.25Gbps<br />

We present a visible optical wireless communication<br />

employing visible lights as<br />

communication media. This thesis demonstrates<br />

the feasibility of 4Mbps visible light communication<br />

by using a red-LED and a Si-pin-PD<br />

in an IrDA package. In 1Mbyte file transfers,<br />

about 8cm coverage was achieved at distance<br />

of about 80cm by using a lens in front<br />

of the LED. The ambient light effect from<br />

a white light illumination source was alse<br />

analyzed.<br />

(ROADM) is a core component for optically<br />

reconfigurable networks. We demonstrate<br />

(O-E-O) switches. The O-O-O and<br />

O-E-O switches based ROADMs may accelerate<br />

the evolution of a traditionally fixed OADM<br />

We propose a hybrid aligned liquid crystal<br />

(LC) cell using a positive dielectric anisotropic<br />

liquid crystal driven by a horizontal field,<br />

which is normally black mode. In the<br />

on-state, vertical aligned LC directors tilt<br />

down and rotate at 45° with respect to the<br />

input polarizer, so that the cell appears to<br />

be white. The device with interdigital electrode<br />

shows a low driving voltage and large cell<br />

gap tolerance.<br />

Evaluation for dissection of rat hippocampus<br />

using stereoscopic microscope system is<br />

demonstrated. Many animal anatomies are<br />

anatomized with stereoscopic microscope.<br />

The environments of anatomy are important<br />

factor to dissector. Lights, reflected on the<br />

liquid, colors and eye fatigue are fatal to<br />

dissector. We reduced reflections with two<br />

incident angle of lights at 45 degree and<br />

used a complementary color at the basement.<br />

Dissector has felt more comfortable after<br />

compensation and the time of anatomy is<br />

reduced.<br />

proposed specialty grating can be continuously<br />

controlled by the variation of reflection chirp<br />

bandwidth because the tension and compression<br />

strain can effectively controls the<br />

chirp ratio along the grating.<br />

based on the polarimetric cells made by the<br />

selenide and sulfide optical fibers were<br />

drawn and their potential for an optical fiber<br />

amplifier as well as a gain medium in mid-IR<br />

threshold of the Bi-NLF tunable wavelength<br />

conversion of 10 ~ 40 Gbit/s NRZ signals<br />

is successfully achieved without using any<br />

SBS suppression schemes.<br />

Recent advances in microfluidics and nanophotonics<br />

have led to a new emerging field<br />

of optofluidics. In optofluidics, fluid flows<br />

give the fine adaptivity, mobility and accessibility<br />

to the nanoscale photonic devices<br />

which cannot be achieved in conventional<br />

devices. However, homogeneous fluids phase<br />

gives only a limited level of controllability by<br />

its own property and functionality. Unusual<br />

physical, chemical and biomolecular functions<br />

can be endowed by adding various colloidal<br />

particles and their assemblies into the fluids<br />

and the introduction of such complex colloidal<br />

systems gives breakthrough for materializing<br />

optofluidic systems. In this paper, we will<br />

discussafewexamplesofuniqueandnovel<br />

characteristics of self-assembled colloidal<br />

structures for optofluidic applications.<br />

Nanoparticles were injected into a Bonghan<br />

corpuscle and we observed them to flow<br />

along the Bonghan duct on the surface of<br />

mammalian internal organs. Another application<br />

was injecting them into lymph nodes<br />

so that Bonghan ducts inside lymphatic<br />

vessels were detected and visualized by the<br />

fluorescence of nanoparticles. Light microscope<br />

and electron microscope images revealed<br />

the nanoparticles captured in the extra<br />

cellular matrix of Bonghan ducts.<br />

We present the fabrication of a single and<br />

double core holey fiber optical cord with<br />

bending insensitive holey fibers. The attenuation<br />

losses at 1,383nm and 1,550nm<br />

were measured to be 0.365dB/km and 0.258<br />

dB/km respectively. The insertion loss with<br />

a connector was as low as 0.1 dB. The<br />

proposed cords show excellent properties<br />

in terms of bending loss, compared with<br />

conventional bending resistant SMFs at the<br />

bending diameters of Ø5.5mm and Ø15mm.<br />

factor of surface-plasmon enhanced LEDs<br />

by the finite different time domain method<br />

Since its discovery, carbon nanotube (i.e.,<br />

CNT) has been extensively studied because<br />

of its physical, chemical, and mechanical<br />

merits and it has been applied instantly for<br />

many fields such as field emission display<br />

(FED), nanoscale bio-sensor, vacuum electronicdevices,andsoon.Recently,CNT<br />

has been applied for x-ray source as a cold<br />

emitter. In this study, we report a new CNT<br />

based field emission x-ray source in which<br />

CNT emitter can be easily detached or<br />

attached into the x-ray tube while the x-ray<br />

tube is operating. The main advantage of it<br />

is when CNT emitters have problems in the<br />

x-ray tube it can be easily replaced with<br />

new one without any big efforts. Detailed<br />

descriptions of it and some preliminary<br />

x-ray images obtained in this study are<br />

One of potential applications is the electron<br />

emitter for x-ray source. In order to obtain<br />

x-ray images of relatively hard material or<br />

components, high quantity of x-ray current<br />

is generally required. In this study, we report<br />

that the current density of x-ray source can<br />

be greatly enhanced by using the CNT<br />

emitter as a cathode. In general, the emission<br />

current of CNT emitter is very sensitive to<br />

gap distance between CNT emitter and grid<br />

metalmesh,andsoon.Extensiveresultsof<br />

these were reported in our recent works[2].<br />

Detailed parameters and corresponding results<br />

were presented and some preliminary characteristics<br />

of the x-ray source were reported<br />

In optical diagnostics for cartilage, electronkinetic<br />

displacement and optical phase<br />

delays depending on applied excitation<br />

voltage and frequency were measured in<br />

cartilage using differential phase optical<br />

coherence tomography (DP-OCT). The investigation<br />

of electrokinetic behavior using<br />

DP-OCT may be used to develop a non<br />

-invasive optical technique for providing a<br />

sensitive indicator of cartilage viability on<br />

the molecular-level and possibly detecting<br />

early degradative changes in cartilage<br />

associated with osteoarthritis. For a full<br />

understanding of the nature and degree of<br />

cartilage degeneration with a joint, 3-D OCT<br />

was also used to demonstrate surface<br />

topography and subsurface disruption of<br />

articular cartilage. The 3-D OCT volumetric<br />

imaging of cartilage provides an enhanced<br />

appreciation and better understanding of<br />

regional degenerative joint disease than<br />

may be realized by conventional 2-D OCT<br />

sectional images. In optical therapeutics of<br />

cartilage, laser ablation was performed using<br />

different wavelengths based on optical absorption<br />

of cartilage. The results showed<br />

that the wavelength dependence of cartilage<br />

ablation depends on the wavelength and the<br />

wavelength where both protein and water<br />

are absorbed was the most efficient wavelength<br />

for cartilage ablation.<br />

microstructured fiber by using a fiber<br />

long-period grating. The long-period grating<br />

leads to phase distortion and loss, which,<br />

with subsequent high-intensity propagation<br />

in uniform fiber, evolves into an enhancement<br />

around the resonant wavelength of the<br />

grating. Wavelength tunability is achieved<br />

by varying the temperature or the ambient<br />

refractive index.<br />

Depressed clad hollow optical fibers were<br />

proposed for cladding-pumped high-power<br />

fiber lasers. Nd3+-doped DCHOF and<br />

Yb3+-doped DCHOF generated 3.3W at<br />

929nm with 41% slope efficiency and 3.1W<br />

at 980nm with 34% slope efficiency with<br />

respect to the launched pump power<br />

respectively. The beam qualities were<br />

diffraction-limited. In the case of<br />

Yb3+-doped DCHOF, the power was<br />

scaled up to 7.5W with 49% slope efficiency<br />

with respect to the launched pump power.<br />

We proposed a photonic crystal fiber based<br />

on a quasi-periodic arrangement of air holes<br />

for chromatic dispersion compensation.<br />

The proposed fiber was a two-concentric<br />

core structure obtained by introducing three<br />

different sizes of air holes in the cladding<br />

The dispersion characteristics of the fiber<br />

are theoretically investigated by using the<br />

semi-vectorial beam propagation method.<br />

The influence of the core structures on the<br />

dispersion characteristics are reasonably<br />

analyzed by using the effective index<br />

model. The quasi-periodic photonic crystal<br />

exhibits very high negative dispersion of<br />

-3400 ps/(km.nm) at 1550nm.<br />

measured using Sagnac loop interferometer.<br />

The thermal expansion coefficient can be<br />

varied by controlling the amount of Ge-doped<br />

in the core region. Using this method,<br />

dB/dT could be made higher than that of<br />

standard PMFs (~10-8/ o C) or comparable<br />

to that of standard PCFs (~10-9/ o C).<br />

effects in tapered As2Se3 chalcogenide<br />

which is about 40,000 times larger than in<br />

standard single-mode fiber due to the 400<br />

times larger n2 and almost 100 times<br />

smaller effective mode area.<br />

metallic thin film on the silicon substrate.<br />

The transmittance and reflectance for the<br />

were calculated by using the finite-difference<br />

We propose and demonstrate a photonic<br />

crystal optical group delay device, in which<br />

two dimensional photonic crystal line defect<br />

waveguide with chirped hole, induces sequential<br />

optical group delays for time-spreading<br />

multiple access (O-CDMA). When a short<br />

pulse signal with a wide spectrum comes<br />

into this device, the guided light is localized<br />

at specific position depending on wavelength.<br />

This concept is suitable to realize a pulse<br />

waveform synthesizer and an en/decoder<br />

for time-spreading/wavelength-hopping O-<br />

CDMA. We have confirmed that this device<br />

etching technique. The wet etching process<br />

electron microscopy(SEM), atomic force<br />

microscopy(AFM) and thickness measurement<br />

system. Roughness was below ± 7 Å. Etch<br />

rate was increased along with HBr and<br />

than adjacent peaks is observed at the<br />

wavelength at which two rings are simultaneously<br />

resonant, one FSR (Free Spectral<br />

Range) can be tuned using a current leve<br />

of a few mA. A widely tunable laser diode<br />

based on hybrid-integration will be realized<br />

Along with simple and cost effective fabrication<br />

of metallic thin film waveguides,<br />

large cladding sensitivity of long-range<br />

surface plasmon-polaritons makes it suitable<br />

for applications to mm scale integrated<br />

optical devices. A double electrode waveguide<br />

is known to support long-range<br />

surface plasmon-polaritons with lower loss<br />

and larger cladding sensitivity than those on<br />

a single electrode waveguide. But detailed<br />

properties of them regarding field identities<br />

and critical dependences on material variations<br />

have not been addressed so far. In this<br />

paper, we made theoretical analysis to clear<br />

dependences of dispersion relations and<br />

mode field profiles on material variations of<br />

a double-electrode waveguide.<br />

and circuit parameters extracted from the<br />

transmission line model (TLM) to a topsurface<br />

emitting-type LED. The emittinglight<br />

decreased with the depth. In this paper, We<br />

considered the natural-drifts in the thickness<br />

of layers. The characteristics, such as the<br />

reflectance and transmission, will be discussed<br />

out the optimum spectral band where the<br />

glucose is most optically sensitive. Then the<br />

transmission characteristics of the glucose<br />

solution were examined by varying its<br />

density. The proposed method will be viable<br />

for the noninvasive detection of glucose<br />

thin glass plate, we found that the loop<br />

mirror is better than the coated fiber typed<br />

We compare the permeability of glycerol<br />

combined with and without micro-needling<br />

threatment. An ex vivo porcine skin was<br />

treated with a micro-needle roller and 80%<br />

glycerol was topically applied on the skin<br />

sample. We show the effect of microneedle<br />

method in the skin permeability of<br />

glycerol.<br />

of clinicians. Using hyper-spectral camera,<br />

shows the potential for automated and<br />

quantitative measurement screening of dental<br />

plaque with band-pass filter on the conventional<br />

drawings of design equipments are produces<br />

block is a 2×2 optical MEMS switch with a<br />

fiber length connected between cross ports.<br />

We measured the time delay difference at<br />

5- and 10-GHz with error less than ±2 ps.<br />

images, 3-D location data of the target<br />

objects in a scene can be robustly extracted.<br />

The accommodation stimulus-response function<br />

and its relationship to the retinal image<br />

quality were investigated using a modified<br />

wavefront sensor. The Navarro accommodationdependent<br />

model of the eyes were also<br />

analyzed for a fixed 3-mm pupil diameter<br />

and six vergence stimuli between 0.17 D<br />

and 5 D. For each of the vergence distances,<br />

the accommodation-refractive power and<br />

the modulation transfer function(MTF) were<br />

measured. We found that the error calculation<br />

of the accommodation-refractive<br />

power made some difference with the real<br />

eye measurement value. To fix the difference<br />

the refractive power errors of the Navarro<br />

accommodation-dependent eye-model was<br />

reduced and the retinal image quality exactly<br />

proportion to the accommodation was obtained<br />

by accurately designing the accommodation<br />

error of the eye model.<br />

Generally, many kinds of phase unwrapping<br />

methods are used to obtain threedimensional<br />

feature in digital hologram. The<br />

Goldstein algorithm is representative method<br />

which requires small memory and short<br />

execution time for an unwrapping process.<br />

However, The Goldstein algorithm has some<br />

problems when the residue is located at<br />

boundary, which residue distance is shorter<br />

than the boundary distance. We have<br />

modified the Goldstein algorithm to solve<br />

the incorrect calculation problem using<br />

boundary information. We found that the<br />

modified Goldstein algorithm could the<br />

solve the Goldstein algorithm's problems.<br />

Photopolymer films containing photoreactive<br />

monomers and fluorescent materials were<br />

investigated for holographic data storage.<br />

In this investigation, a monofuctional acrylate,<br />

ethylene glycol phenyl ether acrylate, was<br />

used for the formation of photopolymerization<br />

and bipyridazine derivatives were used as<br />

fluorescent probe. The mixture of acrylate<br />

monomer, binder, photo initiator and fluorescent<br />

probe was coated on slide glasses.<br />

Holographic recording was performed on<br />

the photopolymer film by the combination<br />

of reference and probe beam. Diffraction<br />

efficiency of the photopolymer film containing<br />

the fluorescent probe showed stable<br />

value after it reached maximum within 100s.<br />

Fluorescent grating image was observed<br />

from the recorded films.<br />
