The committee was trained by experts from the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Park Board. This survey (nearly complete) will show the location of all ash trees on private and public property. The committee created a “decision matrix” for residents about their ash trees, modeled on the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association’s template. Two companies are in the process of offering special neighborhood prices to property owners who would like to chemically treat their large ash trees not on the boulevard, with the goal of protecting those trees. Special neighborhood pricing also will be available from two companies for ash tree removal for ash trees not on the boulevard. For ash trees on the boulevard, property owners can call the City of Minneapolis to have the ash tree removed, and can request a replacement tree (several variety choices are available). Removal and chemical protection are the only two options available for battling the Emerald Ash Borer. Property owners with ash trees will receive letters in the next month from the LHENA Board, outlining removal, replacement, and protection options. Note that tree removal cannot take place between May 1 and Labor Day, because the adult beetle becomes inactive at that time. Tree protection begins in early spring. 21% of the City’s tree cover is ash. So far the Emerald Ash Borer is present in Prospect Park only (within the city). Prospect Park has lost 40 trees as of summer 2010. Signs of infection: D-shaped exit hole at the top of the tree, woodpeckers eating larvae. Call 651-201-6684 “Arrest the Pest” if you see signs of infection. Ash cannot be “worked on” from May 1 through Labor Day. Do not transport firewood. For more information on Emerald Ash Borer, see the June 2009 edition of The Wedge, or the Park Board’s excellent Web site: http://www.minneapolisparks.org/default.asp?PageID=1059

Photo credit: Minneapolis Star Journal Tribune The following homes have been recognized in 2011 for their contribution to the historic fabric of the Lowry Hill East neighborhood. Each home was built at least 100 years ago and adds to the beauty of our historic past. Thank you to the current home owners who work tirelessly to maintain the structures and share the benefits of living in the heart of Minneapolis. The certificates indicate the year, original owner and architect, if known, as well as the present owner. As of 2011, over 200 homes have been researched to date, but there are yet many more to go. Thank you for your understanding if your building has passed the 100 year milestone but you have not heard from us - Lowry Hill East has over 3000 structures! Please call the LHENA office at 612-377-5023 to obtain your certificate.
