Our Story
The Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center provides a broad range of year-round recreational, educational,
social and cultural programs and activities. The facility is designed to attract and serve a variety of
individuals and groups, including, but not limited to, the general public, youth, school and community
groups, the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Located on the Prince William campus of George Mason University, our 110,000 square foot facility
features two pools; a whirlpool; family locker rooms; a full gymnasium; cardio, aerobic and strength studios;
racquetball courts; a child care center and a full range of adult and youth programming.

Don L. Jones, Ph.D.

Dr. Jones has more than 25 years’ experience in
wellness and lifestyle medicine initiatives and
managing health and fitness centers. His expertise
includes medical fitness operations, management
of rehabilitation services and corporate worksite
wellness initiatives. Prior to joining George Mason
University, Dr. Jones managed Tri-City Wellness
Center in Carlsbad, California where he was
instrumental in having the center voted “Best Gym”
in San Diego for three years in a row (2009, 2010,
and 2011). As a strong advocate for the practice
of preventive medicine, he has worked closely
with hospitals, YMCA’s and Parks and Recreation
Departments in Virginia, Florida and California.
Dr. Jones interests include clinical integration
initiatives to help individuals transitioning out of
cardiac and physical rehabilitation programs. He
published “Clinical Integration as a Subversive
Activity” in the American College of Sports
Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal. He also
served as the Director of Rehabilitation Services for
Sentara Hampton General Hospital in Hampton, VA.
Dr. Jones also worked
closely with the Wounded
Warrior Project in Camp
Pendleton, California.
He has done consulting work for hospital wellness
and fitness centers in New Jersey, California and
Japan. As an advocate of quality improvement
initiatives, Dr. Jones served as the Florida Hospital
Celebration Health Campus Representative for the
Baldrige Quality Initiative.
He has served as an Editorial Board member for
the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health
& Fitness Journal for three consecutive two-year
terms. Dr. Jones also served as a Board Member
and Facility Certification Examiner for the Medical
Fitness Association. He was part of a team that
traveled to Brazil for the first International Medical
Fitness Facility certification. Dr. Jones received his
PhD in Movement Science Education at The Florida
State University.

NEW! Wibit Party **suggested for ages 9 and up
The Wibit is an inflatable water sports park for our competition pool.

• Parties are offered in 3 different time slots on the weekends and include time on the
Wibit, swimming in the Leisure Pool and exclusive use of the Party Area for up to 25
participants.
• All participants must pass a swim test (swim 25 yards and tread water for 2 minutes)
prior to use of the Wibit.
Fee: $300/Freedom Members; $350/non-members
Sports Theme Birthday Party – (Ages 2 ½ and older)
Dependent upon the birthday child’s interest, children will play a variety of activities based on the sports chosen. Soccer, basketball, floor hockey and a
mix of other recreational games and activities are available. Our experienced and enthusiastic Instructor will lead the activities for 1 hour. The instructor
will contact you in advance to discuss the activities chosen in more depth. During the second hour parents will continue with the party portion. Tables
and chairs will be set up prior to your arrival. The fee for the party is $100/2 hours of gymnasium rental, $40/hour for an Instructor. If more than 10
children will be participating, an additional Instructor will be required at $40/hour. Paper products are not included. Deposit is required at the time of
making reservation; remaining balance is due one week prior to party. Maximum number of participants for this type of party is 25 children.
Gymnastics Theme Birthday Party – (Ages 2 ½ and older)
Our experienced and fun Instructor will lead the gymnastics activities for 1 hour. Gymnastics activities will include an active warm up and time at each
of the gymnastic stations. An Instructor will contact you in advance to discuss the activities. During the second hour parents will continue with the
party portion. Tables and chairs will be set up prior to your arrival. The fee for the party is $200/2 hours of Community Room rental, $40/hour for an
Instructor. If more than 10 children will be participating, an additional Instructor will be required at $40/hour. Paper products are not included. Deposit
is required at the time of making reservation; remaining balance is due one week prior to party. Maximum number of participants for this type of party is
15 children.
Cooking Theme Birthday Party - (Ages 5 and older)
Our experienced and excited Instructor will craft a cooking activity to entice your child’s taste buds for a 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on the menu. The
Instructor will contact you in advance to discuss the menu and any food allergies. During the second hour you will continue with the party portion.
Tables and chairs will be set up prior to your arrival. The fee for the party is $200/2 hours of Community Room rental, $40/hour for Instructor. If more
than 8 children will be participating, an additional Instructor will be required at $40/hour plus purchased food (price depends on menu). Paper products
are not included. Deposit is required at the time of making reservation; remaining balance is due one week prior to party. Maximum number of
participants for this type of party is 12 children.
Basic Party
Parties are held on the weekends with access to the Party Area for one hour and unlimited swimming
available in the Leisure Pool and Competition Pool before and after. The tumble buckets, slide, vortex and
current channel are operational in the Leisure Pool between 1pm and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
The Party Area is located at the end of the hallway adjacent to the deep end of the pool.
Fee: $160/Freedom Members, $180/Non-members
Included in the Basic Party:
• Swimming and entrance fee for up to 25 participants.
• Use of party space, tables, chairs, refrigerator/freezer, and cleanup/setup.
(Does not include paper products.)

YOUTH PROGRAMS
The Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center offers a wide
variety of fun-packed programs to help children aged
2 to 17 discover a lifelong passion for recreation.
Freedom Youth Sports and Fitness programs give children the opportunity
to pursue new interests or improve skills in an age-appropriate and positive
environment. Our experienced and enthusiastic instructors help youngsters
develop group interaction and social skills while stressing the importance of
teamwork and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. We offer instructional classes
in gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, tae kwon do, soccer, cheerleading, tennis,
and many more activities!
Freedom Arts and Education classes stimulate children’s creativity, through
movement in our dance programs, imagination in our themed classes and
preschool prep, or in the kitchen with Kinder Chefs, where kids both learn to cook
and have the opportunity to enjoy eating their creations!
Freedom instructional programs typically meet once or twice a week for five weeks
or more.
Don’t Forget we offer School Holiday and Teacher Work Day Camps
as well as Friday Night Fun. Terrific programs for your children
when they have a day off from school or need a night out.

Gymnastics – Beginner I (Ages 3 ½ -12)
In a structured setting, children will learn forward and backward rolls on
the wedge mat and floor, bridges, head stands, and beginning cartwheel
skills. Basic skills learned on the balance beam, single rail bar, vault and
trampoline will also be covered.

Gymnastics – Beginner II (Ages 3 ½ -12)
*Prerequisite* – Has completed Beginner I and has the ability to
successfully perform a cartwheel, handstand against the wall (held for
10sec), and standing to a bridge. Class will focus on learning new skills
such as round-offs and kick-overs. Work will continue on cartwheels,

Children will be introduced to basic coordination and tumbling skills, while rotating around a variety
of gymnastic stations with parent. Tot tumblers will work on following directions while participating in

Backyard Games (Ages 6-8)
Now that the weather has changed . . . bring your favorite backyard games inside! Participants will have the
opportunity to develop or polish their backyard game skills. Program may include corn hole, dodge ball,
ladder golf, kick ball, Kan jam, disc golf and more! In addition to playing backyard games, participants will
interact with other and develop balance and coordination through fitness related activities.

Saturday Basketball Camp (Ages 8-14)
Bring your young basketball star to the Freedom courts to develop
or polish basic to intermediate basketball skills. Campers will focus

Little Hoops Basketball (Ages 3 1/2-5)
Dribble. Dribble. Shoot! At the beginner level, children will learn the
fundamental techniques for dribbling, passing and shooting. A basic
understanding of the game and working with others will develop as
coordination and motor skills increase. While learning basketball skills,
participants will be working on balance, coordination and hand eye
coordination.

Cheerleading
Participants will be exposed to basic skills and fundamentals of
cheerleading. Class will focus on flexibility techniques, dance,
cheers, optional jumps, basic tumbling, and moves for stunting.
Participants will learn the importance of teamwork, motivation, and

Freedom Youth on the Run (Ages 9-12)
Is your child ready to run alongside of you in the next race? This program will begin to train young athletes
in conditioning, endurance, agility and finding the passion in running. Through activities and games,
participants will become confident in running and begin to excel while reaching personal goals. This
program will run both out and inside dependent upon weather.

Indoor Tennis – Beginner/Intermediate (Ages 6-13)
Program participants will have the opportunity to excel as a tennis player
in this development program for novice and intermediate players. While
learning proper grip, body position, and fundamental strokes, players
will develop or polish basic hand-eye coordination and enjoy a variety of
games and activities.

Pee Wee Football (Ages 3½-5)
Touchdown! Children will learn the basics in a fun filled football
environment. While working on teamwork and sportsmanship,
participants will be taught the fundamentals on how to catch, throw,
and play in a flag football setting. Future football players will also work
on footwork, speed and agility through interactive games and obstacle
courses.
Parent & Me Sports (Ages 2-4)
Let the games begin! This class gives young children the opportunity
to interact with others in an active environment while developing hand
eye coordination, balance and gross motor skills. . Parent and child will
participate in a playful station-based setting and begin to learn basics of
several sports. Your mini athlete will begin to understand the concepts
of kicking, throwing, catching and shooting a ball while participating in
a variety of stations. Program will also consist of a variety of beginner
games and parachute time! Caregiver participation required.

Home run! Children will be introduced to the basics of t-ball at the

SPORTS
Tae Kwon Do (Ages 4-15)
Introductory class for children with little or
no experience. Through games and other
activities, participants will develop balance,
stamina & self control while learning blocking,
punching and kicking techniques. The
instructor, Mr. Rosa, has over thirty years of
experience in Martial Arts. All participants
work towards completing 24 classes in order
to test for skill levels, “no belt” to black
belt. Uniforms are not required; however, are
available to be purchased from instructor on
first day of class. Instructor has the ability to
move children from younger class to older
based on skill and experience.

Tiny Tots Soccer (Ages 3½-5)
Gooal! This class provides youngsters the opportunity to
learn beginner soccer skills in an indoor environment with
other teammates. Instructors will teach an understanding
of game play and basic rules while focusing on the
individual skills and development of team play. Tiny

Sports Challenge (Ages 6-8)
Can’t decide which sport to play next season? Experience a different
one each week in this active program. Through the session, young
athletes will be introduced to the basic skill of soccer, tennis, basketball,
volleyball, floor hockey, and flag football. The young athletes will be
exposed to individual skill improvement and the importance of positive

Participants are offered the opportunity to participate in a swim program prior to or
following the Home School PE class. Participants are divided based on skill once
the program begins. While teaching your children how to swim skillfully and safely,

EDGE? Our annual Home School Field Day will consist of a variety of sports, arts

The Freedom Preschool is a half-day program for 3 and 4 year olds. Our program is designed to develop

Adult Masters Swimming – Sunfish Masters (Ages 18 and up)
Freedom Center sponsored swim training for adults ages 18 and up geared toward improving fitness
and performance. This is a great program for former competitive swimmers, triathletes, cross-trainers,
and anyone looking for a rewarding physical challenge in a healthy social environment. Minimum
qualification to join is to be able to swim 100 continuous yards of freestyle with rhythmic breathing.
Practice times include weekday mornings and evenings as well as weekend mornings. Freedom Center

Individual and Small Group Instruction (Ages 4-Adult)
The Freedom Center offers one-on-one swimming instruction with our certified staff. Available dates and times are based on instructors’ availabilities
outside of teaching their group classes. Each session of Individual lessons is exactly the same as the group lessons and usually set up in groups of 8 to
10 lessons. Please call Tim at 703-993-8511 to see what times are available and to set up your lesson. Fee: $30/30 min. lesson.
Specialized Youth or Adult Groups
Great for Scouts and other organizations with specific skill-related goals to accomplish. Groups can arrange for one of our instructors to assist your
group with skills such as swimming, water safety, first aid, and CPR. There is a cost of $5 per person, per hour, with a $60 per hour minimum for the

American Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid for Professional Rescuers
(Ages 12 and up)
In this class participants learn how to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first
aid emergencies. Participants will gain the knowledge needed to provide immediate care to a suddenly
injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

American Red Cross Babysitters Course (Ages 11-15)
Be the best babysitter on the block! This American Red Cross course is fun and fast-paced with hands-on

leaders and role models, problem solve, handle household emergencies and illnesses, and write resumes
and prepare for job interviews! Participants will also take home several training materials to review!

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
Course
Lifeguard Instructor candidates will be trained to teach the
American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. Prerequisites: Must
be 17 yrs. Old by the last day of class. Must successfully
complete the prerequisite skill for lifeguarding, attend and
participate in all class sessions, demonstrate competency in
all required skills, pass two written exams with a minimum
grade of 80%, and demonstrate competency in all three final
rescue skill scenarios. Successful completion of this course
will certify the candidate as an ARC Lifeguarding/First Aid and

Water Safety Instructor Certification
The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
Course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and
presentations in the ARC Swimming and Water Safety Program
by developing their understanding of how to use the course
materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate
participants’ progress. WSI candidates are trained to teach all
levels of ARC swimming lessons.

This certification is for children 12 – 15 years old. After completing a one hour training session with one
of our professional fitness staff members, you and you 12 – 13 year old can work out side by side. You 14

The Freedom Center will be hosting the 10th Anniversary of Freedom Attack the Fat Challenge. After 9
successful programs, and over 800 participants overall, this fall will mark our 10th season. The program
is an 8 week weight loss based challenge, working in small group teams with trainers. Training is held
3 sessions per week, and the program includes nutritional seminars, lectures, interactive stretching
workshops, food journaling, weekly
weigh ins and specialty classes.
