Indiana Law Review Blog
Announces Winner of
Inaugural Competition
IU McKinney student Burnell Grimes
was named the winner of the inaugural
Indiana Law Review blog writing competition
in January.
Grimes’ entry, titled “The Best of
Both Worlds: To Indiana’s Appointment
of Counsel Funding Problem,” has now
been published on the ILR blog, http://
indianalawreview.com.
Grimes said he was talking with a law
school friend about providing legal services
to the underserved when a solution
began to take shape. He turned those
thoughts into his winning blog entry.
“We were both talking about the barriers
to legal services,” Grimes said. “That
started me thinking about solutions.”
“The Indiana Law Review is proud to
publish Grimes’ blog article about improving
Indiana’s legal aid and pro bono programs,”
said editor-in-chief Reid Dodge.
“Of all the competition submissions, his
stood out as both substantive and relevant
to Indiana legal practitioners, which
is exactly the type of article we initially envisioned
when we created the blog at the
beginning of the Fall 2014 semester.”
“The blog has been well received by
practitioners,” said blog editing committee
chair, Chris Mueller.
Final Four Color Guard
IU McKinney student Nasha Baughman
(second from left) took part in the Joint
Service Color Guard as part of the Military
Department of Indiana Ceremonial
Unit prior to the start of the NCAA Division
I Men’s Basketball Championship
on April 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium. She
participated as an Operations Specialist,
Second Class in the United States
Coast Guard. Baughman is a member of
the Coast Guard Reserve, and was invited
to watch the competition in a suite at the
stadium hosted by Kareem Abdul-Jabar
(in the ball cap in the background).
“The ability to represent my country
and pay tribute to my fellow Service members
in this way gives me the utmost satisfaction,”
Baughman said. “It is important
for us to recognize and celebrate all those
that have served.”
Baughman was offered a Reserve Intelligence
Commission with the United States
Navy in March 2015.
Angela Adams, ‘04 Presented
with Advocacy Award
The American Immigration Lawyers Association
(AILA) presented Angela Adams,
Associate General Counsel, Indiana
University, with its 2015 Advocacy Award
on June 20 during AILA’s Annual Conference
in National Harbor, Maryland.
Adams was nominated by the AILA Indiana
Chapter, of which she is a long-time
member and former chapter chair.
Adams became associate general
counsel for immigration at Indiana
University last year. Her interest in the
areas of immigration and education is
a longstanding one: before law school,
she worked with the Indiana Department
of Education in its division of Language
Minority and Migrant programs, serving
as an education consultant. After her
graduation from McKinney Law in 2004,
she worked for the Indianapolis law firm
of Lewis & Kappes, where she became
a partner and consulted on immigration
policy. She organized and led the “Indiana
Compact,” a statement of five principles
to guide a reasonable discussion
of immigration in the state, which was
signed by nearly 4,000 people, including
many leaders in business, education
and politics.
