Kirk '56 Named U.S.<br />

Senator<br />

Paul G. Kirk, Jr. ’56 has been appointed<br />

to temporarily fill the U.S. Senate seat<br />

left vacant by the passing of Senator<br />

Edward Kennedy. Kirk will serve in this<br />

position until Massachusetts voters choose<br />

a replacement during a special election to<br />

be held on January 19, 2010.<br />

Kirk is a founding Board Member of<br />

the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation<br />

and currently serves as Chairman of the<br />

Foundation's Board of Directors. He is<br />

affiliated with Sullivan & Worcester LLP of<br />

Boston, a law firm of which he was a<br />

partner from 1977-90. He is also Chairman<br />

and Chief Executive Officer of Kirk &<br />

Associates, Inc., a business advisory and<br />

consulting firm located in Boston. From<br />

1985-89 he served as the Chairman of the<br />

Democratic Party. He was their treasurer<br />

from 1983-85.<br />

Kirk was graduated from St. Sebastian’s<br />

School in 1956 and earned degrees from<br />

Harvard College and Harvard Law School.<br />

He served on the St. Sebastian’s School<br />

Board of Trustees from 1992-2004 and<br />

again from 2006-2009.<br />

Students Recognized<br />

By Merit Scholarship<br />

Program<br />

Headmaster Bill Burke and Assistant<br />

Headmaster Mike Nerbonne<br />

announced the names of the six students<br />

who have been recognized by the 2010<br />

Merit Scholarship Program during<br />

Corporate Chapel on Monday, October 5.<br />

Ned Kingsley was named a Semifinalist<br />

and Joe Albanese, Brendan Ecclesine, Max<br />

Kingsley, Mike Sanderson, and Andrew<br />

Wadsworth were named as Commended<br />

Students.<br />

Only 50,000 out of 1.5 million students<br />

from across the country are invited each<br />

year to participate in the Program by<br />

placing in the top five percent of the<br />

students who took the 2008 Preliminary<br />

SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying<br />

Test. Of that number, 34,000 are<br />

recognized as Commended Students by<br />

receiving a national Selection Index score<br />

of 201 or higher. In addition, 16,000 are<br />

named Semifinalists and are invited to<br />

further compete by completing a more indepth<br />

application.<br />

Debate Awards<br />

Chris Riley ’13 earned a Speaking Prize<br />

for his individual performance at the<br />

St. Sebastian’s School Novice Debate<br />

Tournament on Sunday, October 25.<br />

Twelve schools provided 46 total teams for<br />

the event.<br />

Special recognition was also given to<br />

the team of Julian Matra ’13 and Mike<br />

Petro ’13. By obtaining a 3-0 record during<br />

the tournament, they earned themselves a<br />

Fifth Place overall finish.<br />

At the Roxbury Latin Tournament on<br />

Sunday, December 6, Joe Albanese ’10 and<br />

Ned Kingsley ’10 earned Third Place by<br />

achieving a 3-0 record in the Advanced<br />

Division for their team performance.<br />

Thirteen schools provided 26 total teams<br />

for the event.<br />

Together with Albanese and Kingsley,<br />

St. Sebastian’s School teammates Brendan<br />

Ecclesine ’10 and Dillon Ecclesine ’11<br />

earned a combined record of 5-1 at the<br />

Tournament.<br />

Flynn Family<br />

Gymnasium Dedication<br />

Adedication ceremony naming the<br />

main gymnasium in honor of the<br />

Flynn Family was held prior to the start of<br />

Homecoming festivities on Saturday,<br />

October 17.<br />

A buffet breakfast and newly installed<br />

trophy cases greeted guests as they arrived<br />

for the event. Following a blessing from Fr.<br />

John Arens and formal remarks from<br />

Headmaster Bill Burke (see page 20) and<br />

Bob Flynn '61, varsity basketball Captain<br />

Ryan Kilcullen '10 and Coach George<br />

Morelli presented the Flynns with a<br />

basketball signed by all members of the<br />

varsity squad. ■<br />
