Kirk '56 Named U.S.
Senator
Paul G. Kirk, Jr. ’56 has been appointed
to temporarily fill the U.S. Senate seat
left vacant by the passing of Senator
Edward Kennedy. Kirk will serve in this
position until Massachusetts voters choose
a replacement during a special election to
be held on January 19, 2010.
Kirk is a founding Board Member of
the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation
and currently serves as Chairman of the
Foundation's Board of Directors. He is
affiliated with Sullivan & Worcester LLP of
Boston, a law firm of which he was a
partner from 1977-90. He is also Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of Kirk &
Associates, Inc., a business advisory and
consulting firm located in Boston. From
1985-89 he served as the Chairman of the
Democratic Party. He was their treasurer
from 1983-85.
Kirk was graduated from St. Sebastian’s
School in 1956 and earned degrees from
Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
He served on the St. Sebastian’s School
Board of Trustees from 1992-2004 and
again from 2006-2009.
Students Recognized
By Merit Scholarship
Program
Headmaster Bill Burke and Assistant
Headmaster Mike Nerbonne
announced the names of the six students
who have been recognized by the 2010
Merit Scholarship Program during
Corporate Chapel on Monday, October 5.
Ned Kingsley was named a Semifinalist
and Joe Albanese, Brendan Ecclesine, Max
Kingsley, Mike Sanderson, and Andrew
Wadsworth were named as Commended
Students.
Only 50,000 out of 1.5 million students
from across the country are invited each
year to participate in the Program by
placing in the top five percent of the
students who took the 2008 Preliminary
SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test. Of that number, 34,000 are
recognized as Commended Students by
receiving a national Selection Index score
of 201 or higher. In addition, 16,000 are
named Semifinalists and are invited to
further compete by completing a more indepth
application.
Debate Awards
Chris Riley ’13 earned a Speaking Prize
for his individual performance at the
St. Sebastian’s School Novice Debate
Tournament on Sunday, October 25.
Twelve schools provided 46 total teams for
the event.
Special recognition was also given to
the team of Julian Matra ’13 and Mike
Petro ’13. By obtaining a 3-0 record during
the tournament, they earned themselves a
Fifth Place overall finish.
At the Roxbury Latin Tournament on
Sunday, December 6, Joe Albanese ’10 and
Ned Kingsley ’10 earned Third Place by
achieving a 3-0 record in the Advanced
Division for their team performance.
Thirteen schools provided 26 total teams
for the event.
Together with Albanese and Kingsley,
St. Sebastian’s School teammates Brendan
Ecclesine ’10 and Dillon Ecclesine ’11
earned a combined record of 5-1 at the
Tournament.
Flynn Family
Gymnasium Dedication
Adedication ceremony naming the
main gymnasium in honor of the
Flynn Family was held prior to the start of
Homecoming festivities on Saturday,
October 17.
A buffet breakfast and newly installed
trophy cases greeted guests as they arrived
for the event. Following a blessing from Fr.
John Arens and formal remarks from
Headmaster Bill Burke (see page 20) and
Bob Flynn '61, varsity basketball Captain
Ryan Kilcullen '10 and Coach George
Morelli presented the Flynns with a
basketball signed by all members of the
varsity squad. ■
