Trudeau Leaders off to Camp
On September 27 at 9:00 am, sixty student leaders from
Trudeau along with six staff members and nine TLC
committee members left on two school buses to Camp
Tawingo, located in Huntsville, Ontario. They boarded the
buses cheering. Though they did not know it yet, from that
moment onwards, they became a part of an adventure that
would become one of their most cherished experiences, and
when they look back they can’t help but smile. Trudeau
Leadership Camp, or TLC as most call it, not only brought out
and strengthened the leadership skills of its attendees but it
also gave them the opportunity to meet and make friends with
other leaders of Trudeau.
The campers had to arrive at school at 7:30 am to meet their
fellow team members as well as their team leaders. Initially,
these teams played a significant role in life at camp, but after a
while, students made so many new friends that the teams did
not matter anymore. Everyone was supportive of each other
regardless of his or her designated group. In the end, we
became one big team, “Team Trudeau”, and it was this feeling
the Trudeau Leadership Camp committee members tried to
instil in us from the start.
Camp consisted of many fun-filled activities. As soon as we
got off the bus (still cheering) and put our things away, we got
into our teams to participate in an orientation activity. Little
did we know that this activity was designed to prepare us for
the evening event, the “Amazing Race Through Disney
World”! In our groups, we ran from Canada to China in a
couple of hours. Each “country” was guarded by a Disney
character who was played by one of our amazing TLC staff or
committee members. A special shout-out to Ms. Miyauchi for
her excellent impression of Captain Hook! Even though her
moustache fell off just before she made us walk the plank, Ms.
Miyauchi stayed very much in character.
The first evening activity was a terrific way for team members
to get to know each other. Over the next couple of days, we
continued to build teamwork skills as we worked together to
complete various physical challenges. For example, we had to
balance on a wooden board positioned on a log for ten
seconds. This may sound easy, but the catch was that the
entire team had to be on the wooden platform. The activities
were challenging but do-able. They taught the participants a
lot about their team members as well as themselves.
Mornings started at 7:15 am and every camper had to pick a
morning activity to attend. There were so many to choose
from, but I would say the best was the Polar Bear Dip by far.
