PRIOR PREPARATION RULES
Hello Friends,
Though I have not towed very much
compared to some of the road warriors that pull their
Catalina 22s all over the country, I have had my share of
trailer incidents. Fortunately neither of the mishaps I have
experienced was of any serious consequence. Donna and
I blew out a tire on the initial trip home after purchasing
the boat in Longview, Texas. We were a few miles from
home after driving almost four hundred. The tire was an
auto tire and when it blew out, it took the fender out too.
We were lucky and able to tie off the fender and limp
home on the spare. Soon after, I learned of the distinction
between Special Trailer and automotive tires. If you tow
your Catalina 22, the ST tires are well worth the extra
dollars they cost.
Officers Reports
incidents to be recounted at the cookout. The National
Regatta and the Northern Gulf Coast Cruise likely draw
the largest number of trailered boats and there is always
someone able to recount a tale of road woe.
Another mishap occurred on a shorter trip towing the boat
home from Lake Pontchartrain for routine maintenance. I
had loaded the boat uneventfully with help from a dock
pal and was on I-12 westbound and down. I had driven
about five miles when a premonition or something like
one nudged me into a large fuel stop. As soon as I
opened the door of the Tahoe I knew that I had a
problem. I could smell the tell-tale scent of hot brakes. I
was surprised as I had just spent over $700.00 on
rebuilding the entire braking system. Everything was
new…except the master cylinder. Its piston was jammed
in the full-on position. Both rims were too hot to touch and
locked in place. I sat there for many long minutes trying to
decide what to do when it occurred to me that if I would
open one of the bleeder nipples the pressure in the brake
system would dissipate and I would be able to get home,
without brakes of course, and make repairs in the back
yard. I got Saint Ben home and added a new master
cylinder to the “hole in the water” expense account.
Each year, two of the bigger new list of harrowing
It seems folks with years of towing experience and those
with none are equally afflicted with the trailer blues though
there is lots that can be done to diminish the chances of
problems occurring to your trailing adventure. I have
written two articles prior to this and those might provide
some new ideas. See “Road Warrior Worries,” June, 2009
and” Sitting Pretty,” March 2011.
At a recent meeting of Fort Walton’s Fleet 77, Treasurer
Floyd Mckenzie conducted a presentation promoting safe
towing practices. He was kind enough to send me a copy
of his tip sheet which I include here. Floyd and I both
agree that though nothing is guaranteed once you hitch
up and get rolling, following a few Prior Preparation Rules
will greatly diminish the possibility of towing problems.
2011 Catalina National Championship Regatta
By Gene Ferguson
The National Regatta is now a thing of history. The event
was an experience for several who had not participated in
a National event. The majority of those were the Juniors
who sailed in the Junior National Regatta.
First Place boat Polychronic skippered by Alex Schwinn with crew
Christophe Chaumont and Grace Embry. Owner Chip Embrey in the
background.
Third place boat Challenger skippered by Maxwell Lipari with crew Troy
Medinis & Samuel Scheibler. Owner Mitch Bullock on the left.
of 20 to 25 with gusts to 30 but that did not deter the
juniors who had registered to participate. With three boats
and crew plus the boat owner took the wind on in stride
and had a great time. The high wind did not phase them
one bit.
The practice race was in the afternoon with several boats
vying for position at the start. The winds were about the
same as in the morning, and the participates handled the
wind about the same as the juniors did in the morning.
Monday started with winds the same as Sunday.
Evidently too much for some of the participants. One race
for the Spinnaker class was sailed in the morning with
fourteen of the twenty registrants making it around the
course.
In the afternoon only five of the seventeen Gold fleet
participants and eight of the thirteen Silver fleet
participants chose to brave the winds and race. The race
committee got three races in for the day. With the forecast
of light and variable winds for both Tuesday and
Wednesday they tried to get as many races as they could.
Second place Boat No Cat Hare skippered by Benjamin Lipari with crew
Adrian Scheibler & Stratton Szanyl. Owner Don Hare in the background.
Sunday, the day of the Junior regatta brought high winds
Tuesday lived up to the forecast. Eighteen of the twenty
Spinnaker boats were able to sail the course with a
medium to light breeze. However that breeze did not hold
and the committee was able to get in only one Genoa
race in the afternoon.
Wednesday the committee opted to start the Genoa boats
A New Head on the Boat
By Don Boyko
We've been working on an idea to improve the head
situation on our C-22 MK-II version.
normally go in the cabin liner. I used some 2" X 2"
fiberglass "L" stock that I have to mount the wood to, and
With the factory location for the head on the port side with
the V-berth cushion removed, it's still tight, (especially
underway), and if we want to use the V-berth at night and
the use of the head, we have to re-locate it to the salon
area,(pain in the butt). We've found the quarter berths on
the MK-II nice and long, and very comfortable for
sleeping, and normally use the V-berth to stow our
luggage. Normally it's only my Mate and I that cruise on
the boat, so we don't need sleeping accommodations for
then attach the assemblies to the cabin liner. Aluminum
angle stock, or 2" square wood stock could also be used
to accomplish this.
These fiddle-sticks will help to hold our luggage and
blankets in place while sailing. The long center fiddle-stick
is mounted with 3- 1/4" eye bolts to the liner. This will be
used to help hold our luggage and blankets forward while
a gang.
So, here are some photos of the idea we came up with to
improve the head issue with our C-22 MK-II. We removed
all the cushions in the V-berth area, and the plywood
bulkhead for the center storage area under the V-berth. I
fabricated some fiddle-sticks out of some 1 X 6 clear pine,
then stained, and varnished them. They fit into the
recessed areas where the storage area covers would
sailing. The side fiddle-sticks are held in place with 2- 1/4"
SS machine screws. I still need to figure out how and
where to fasten some hooks on the top of the storage
area to tie off some line or bungee to hold everything in
place.
(Continued on page 27)
Fleet 4, Sacramento, CA—“Pimp my boat” - We’re
talking about customizing your boat for cruising or for
racing. The second annual “PMB” was again a successful
social-potluck-meeting-training session for all involved.
We saw some new members with excellent restorations
of a “heavy” C-22 (Steve Fargo); a sumptuous feed/
potluck with hot food thanks to everybody, especially the
hospitality chairperson (Madeline Rayfuse); A meeting
that was perfectly short-we opened the meeting,
introduced the new and returning members and recessed
for the potluck-5 minutes max.
This was followed by tours of the 5 participating boats
with their custom hardware on display-their galleys
smoking hot and the Rum-a-flowing. What we couldn’t
serve on the pier was served onboard!
Since your Captain owns a stripped/racer type C-22, I
was really impressed by what a few pounds spread
around the hull can achieve to add some comfort to a
Race boat. Love handles sort of!
The training session involved watching your Secretary/
Editor (Roy Moore) raise his mast unassisted. But in the
end, this is what we learned. The ‘A’ frame pivoting at the
chainplates of the forward lowers worked keeping the
mast centered while acting as a Gin Pole to get the
leverage necessary to get it erect. However, using the
forestay, with a furled jib to pull on, didn’t work because
the trailer mounted winch was too close to the pulpit. It
was advised by several in attendance that the shorter
halyards would work better because the winch wouldn’t
run out rope/strap before the extrusion is vertical.
I digress-this also allows the forestay to be free &
unloaded so it can be connected at the fore triangle
without worrying about keeping the pole up. If the
backstay is loosened, the aft lowers will keep things solid
and erect while the forestay or the forward lowers is/are
secured.
Another recommendation from the assembled crowd was
to raise the turn-around or pulley above the pulpit to keep
the tensioned lines clear of the attachment point for the
forestay.
1 person can do it but 2 is better; 1 at the winch and the
other on lookout for twisted wires, adjusters that have
turned shy or cables caught on the boat or trailer. Getting
it up can be interesting.
OK I’m back:
Go for the gold-coming up the first weekend of June (5-6)
at Scotts Flat Reservoir is the regional championship for
the C-22. See the Racing section for particulars-fun place
Fleet 20, Portland OR—Not much to report here,
Although a funny thing happened on the way to Victoria in
this years Oregon Off-Shore Ocean Race. Many of our
friends in SYSCO (small yacht club of Oregon) have or
crew on boats that participate in the International Race
each spring. This year somewhere near the start (just offshore
from the mouth of the Columbia River between
Wash. and Oregon) L’Orca 38 sailboat was hit by...well a
“Whale” and dismasted! The Whale was doing what
Whales do (Think Pacific Life Insurance commercial) and
landed L’Orca. Fortunately no one was hurt although
some “Whaley Bits” were left behind as high as the
spreaders on the rigging. USCG responded and escorted
L’Orca back through the river to Port.
People come and go but great boats remain in Fleet 20.
