Mid – Season words of Wisdom from the President DEVIL
The Aspley Rugby League Football Club boasts a total of 695 registered players and 39
teams (35 junior and 4 senior). The club competes and has had much success in 3
separate governing bodies, The Brisbane Second Division, The Greater Brisbane Junior
Rugby League and The Brisbane & District Women’s Rugby League competitions.
Our great club, in conjunction with the Brisbane Broncos and major sponsor Fuji Xerox
have played an enormous role in developing and maintaining a strong presence of Rugby
League in our local community. For several years now we have funded, coordinated and
assisted with competitions for secondary, independent and primary schools, not only in our
catchment, but as far north as Narangba and Redcliffe as well as holding a dominant
position in our weekend competitions.
Our coaches and their staff are supported in their roles through development and education
programs, to ensure our players and their families get the most out of their football
experience, game development, discipline and skills.
All of that being said, as the Rugby League season kicked off this year amongst a general
amount of controversy at an NRL level, we have faced our own share of adversity at both
Junior and Senior levels. We must focus on the bottom line, and that is, as a club, we will
always act in the best interests of our players. We are among the biggest and strongest
clubs in S.E. Qld and have the reputation among our peers of professionalism and
discipline. We have developed that reputation through dealing fairly at all levels, always
putting the welfare of our players first, and acting with professional courtesy.
We can therefore, continue to progress and focus on making sure that everyone is getting
the most out of the game…..fun, sportsmanship, teamwork and mateship.
I look forward to the remainder of the season and seeing you all around the grounds.
Aspley RLFC AGM
Aspley U12’s took to the TV Screens early in the season to assist
with the launch of the National Broadband Network. The team
demonstrated the “speed” of the new internet connection by
participating in a short training session with Jharal Yow Yeh on
site while Michael Hancock from the Brisbane Broncos gave
instructions live from Suncorp Stadium. The boys had fun and
showcased our new training gear in the process!
Introducing the new Football Operations Manager ~
Dennis Moore
Dennis comes to the club with an extensive history in Rugby league, especially in
coaching ~ taking the reins with the Queensland Under 17 team in 2002 and
Under 19 team in 2003 as well as the Under 18 Origin team in 2009. Dennis also
coached the Australian Junior Kangaroos (Under 19) in 2003 before spending 5
years as Des Hasler’s assistant at the Manly Sea Eagles culminating with the 2008
Premiership.
“I want to use my experience to help at the Aspley Devils in any way I can” Moore
said. “Simon Scanlan has left the place in great shape, and with the expertise of
Kathy Gill and Fletcher Holmes we have a very good operations unit. I look
forward to continuing to get out and about to meet the families and watch this
great club do what it does best – play footy”.
Dennis is settling into the role and taking on every task as it presents itself. When
you see him around the grounds, please make sure you come and say hi.
There are a number of pressing issues which have his attention at present
including the drainage, shade and Duty Official/BBQ facilities at O’Callaghan Park,
ongoing field maintenance at Kirby Park and the associated Grants and
Sponsorships that we need to secure in order for all of this work to proceed. We
are keeping him busy!
“Chairman’s Trophy 2013”
The Chairman’s Trophy is a mid-year “grand final-like”
play off between 1 st and 2 nd placed teams. This year we
are very excited to have 2 teams competing for the
Chairman’s Trophy and they are as follows:
U16Div2 coached by Glenn Collins
U18Div2 coached by Nev Watkins
I wish the teams the best of luck and go the DEVILS!
Aspley Broncos Challenge
Grand Final night kicked off with the year 8’s - North Lakes College vs Sandgate SHS. The bigger
and faster Sandgate boys dominated the game winning 48 points to 4. The most pleasing thing for
me was seeing North Lakes compete for the entire game. Well done boys! Man of the match was
presented by Brisbane Broncos “Recruitment Manager” Simon Scanlan and was awarded to
Sandgate SHS “Pocket Rocket” and Aspley R.L.F.C U13 player – Michael Winchester, who steered
his side around the park superbly on the night.
Wavell SHS and Sandgate SHS battled for the year 9 premiership trophy. Wavell came up with the
goods, beating Sandgate 34-12. Rangy Fijian Eddie Marau was awarded man of the match by
Broncos and Australian winger Jahral Yow Yeh
The boys from Pine Rivers faced Wavell in the year 10 grand final. Again, Wavell was too good on
the night beating Pine 28 points to 12. Aspley junior Friday Banghud was awarded player of the
match.
The last game of the night was between Wavell SHS and Pine Rivers SHS in the “Open Division”.
Both teams started fast and aggressive with Wavell SHS putting first points on the board. From
there on in, it was pretty much Wavell’s game. The night was certainly a night for the small men
to shine, another Aspley junior Kieth Innocencio winning best on ground.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people -
Brisbane Broncos Game Development Manager and competition sponsor - Paul Dyer, State
Manager of Fuji Xerox Australia and club’s Major Sponsor - Garry Gray, Brisbane Broncos
players and MOM presenters - Josh McGuire and Jharal Yow Yeh, Game Officials Travis Gorman,
This year’s Catholic Challenge was again a big hit with the students from
surrounding Catholic Schools coming in and taking part, around 125 students
participated in the 8 weeks of mock games and a “Gala Day”. This year was a
little different we had the opportunity to offer the program to year 4 students
which was the first for the competition. Players were split into 8 even teams
which were made up of students from all participating schools. We had 6 year
5,6 and 7 mixed teams and 2 year 4 teams.
They were split in 2 pools and played a round robin type competition which
meant everyone had to play each other once in the older teams and the year
4 players only had the opportunity to play each other 4 times.
Once all teams had played off in their respective pools we then had cross pool
play offs. 3v3, 2v2 and 1v1 being the grand final.
While both teams were in the dressing sheds being addressed last minute by
their respective coaches, the rest of the students formed a tunnel and clapped
them out.
As you could imagine this helped set the stage for a magnificent game of
football to finish such a great day.
I would like to congratulate all students involved throughout the competition
for their enthusiasm and keenness to learn. I would also like to thank the
teachers who helped with week to week travel and Tony McCarthy – Zone 6
sport coordinator for his organisation behind the scenes. Last but not least I
would like to thank Paul Dyer from the Brisbane Broncos and Garry Gray from
Fuji Xerox for their continued support for this competition.
Cyril Connell Cup
I would like to make special mention of those boys who represented Norths in the
Cyril Connell Cup final against Parramatta, narrowly losing by 2 points on the buzzer.
For those who don’t know what the Cyril Connell Cup is, it is a QRL run U16
representative competition. The Norths team in particular is made up of players
within the Northern Broncos program which is a program that encompasses 13 other
junior football clubs in our area from the ages of 13 - 18. The final cut of 25 had 18
of our players, all of whom played at least one game each.
Congratulations to all involved!
I wish all Aspley RLFC teams the best of luck for the business end of the season and
look forward to enjoying more good footy!
2001 marked the year that I joined Aspley Rugby League Football Club as a young 6
year old and I have played every year since. I started playing at Aspley as my father,
Glenn had also started at Aspley as a 7 year old and continued his career, with a few
breaks in between, until he played his last game for the club when he was in his
early 30’s. In 2002 my older brother, Kruise joined after he saw how much I enjoyed
the game and then 2 years later my younger brother, Jack registered as a 4 year old.
Dad had re-registered a few years later so he could play a few games to claim his 200
games for Aspley so at one point Mum had all 4 of us playing at Aspley.
Coach Education
The start of the year is the time to work extra hard with the
players on the fundamentals skills such as, grip, catch, pass,
tackle technique, draw pass, wrestle technique, team
structures etc
We were lucky enough to have NRL and Broncos Game
Development Officers assist with the process on many
occasions and I would like to take the opportunity to thank
the following people for doing so, Sarah Walker, Wayne
Weekes, Paul Dyer, Michael Hancock, Mick De Vere, Darren
I have enjoyed my years at the club, not only playing but socialising as well, and have
had some successful and not so successful years on the field. I have also experienced
the annual exchange with Aspley and the Wentworthville Junior Rugby League Club
in Under 13’s. Over this weekend we were cared for and entertained by our billets.
This year is a very emotional and proud one, firstly being nominated for the role of
Junior Club Captain and then being accepted for this role by the Committee and
secondly it’s my last year playing football as a junior, although I am looking forward
to the challenges that lie ahead within the seniors.
Q: What sort of Business is Firstmac?
A: Firstmac is an Australian non-bank lender that strives to beat the banks, and save you money, by offering home
loans and other financial products at great rates.
Firstmac is a proud sponsor of the Brisbane Broncos (look for us on the sleeve). Our headquarters is in Brisbane and
we have offices in Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Singapore.
We have written over 68,000 home loans in the past 10 years and we currently manage about $5 billion in mortgages
and $150 million in cash investments. We have been around for over 30 years.
Q: How long have you been involved with Aspley RLFC?
A: We got involved with the Aspley RLFC this season, and we started sponsoring the Broncos in 2012.
Q: Do you have kids playing at Aspley?
No, we just wanted to get involved and help all the kids at Aspley RLFC by contributing sponsorship funds generated
by paying the club a fee for every Firstmac home loan the club delivers under our special referral program. If Aspley
RLFC refers someone to us for a home loan, we will pay the club a fee at settlement and the customer gets the direct
benefit of lower interest rates immediately. It’s a WIN-WIN!
Q: Why did you become a sponsor?
We love rugby league and we love what Aspley RLFC is doing for junior sport in the area. Plus we try to support
people who back the Brisbane Broncos.
Q: What do you like most about the Aspley RLFC?
The strong ties with the mighty Broncos at a junior level and with a top reputation as a Broncos feeder club along
with a solid structure that generates great players, means that Aspley RLFC is a great investment for any business.
In the lead up to State of Origin Game 2, 10 players from the U10 Buckley Team
had the opportunity to meet and train with the Queensland State of Origin
players. Our 10 players along with 10 players from Logan formed a Guard of
Honour and the Queensland team stood behind them. The Premier and Lord
Mayor walked through shaking each boys hand prior to a media conference. The
boys then did two training drills with the Queensland players and then had the
opportunity for photos and signatures. The boys and parents had a great
afternoon and one they will remember for a lifetime.

Hi Everyone,
It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the season, it has
gone so quickly. All of the courses for this year are now complete and again
I would like to thank all of those who gave up there time to attend
them. Just a reminder, that anyone in a Volunteering role in our club must
have a Blue Card. The forms are at the office and it is a very easy process to
complete.
For the parents who have attended League safe and Touch Judge courses
this year, most of you should have received your certificates by now. If you
are still waiting and have any concerns please give me a ring and I can chase
it up for you. Also, a reminder that the League safe shirts from last year are
in and Kathy has a list in the office of those waiting on shirts.
Thank you to all the parents that we see giving their time up each
week. Whether it be doing touch judge or taking your turn in the canteen
for your team at home games, it is very much appreciated. It is the
volunteers in any club that are the back bone to its success. Wishing all the
teams the best for the tail end of the season. Go the mighty Aspley Devils
“Aspley Open Womens Team”
The Open Women's have strapped on their boots once again for the 2013 season,
and what a success this season has been, so far, for our second year in the
competition. This well bonded and family orientated side have really stepped it up
a notch and are now in view of their first ever finals run for Division 2 in the
Brisbane and District Women’s competition.
The ladies have been training hard and playing harder, they have just come out of
their 7 th straight win and so far are undefeated on home soil for 2013. All under
the great eyes of Coach, Bill Haua, whose time, patience and knowledge has been
invaluable. Bill’s coaching, coaching staff and the ladies efforts have the team
currently sitting in 1 st position on the Division 2 competition ladder.
It was a very proud moment when three of the ladies were selected to attend the
Open Womens SEQ players emerging camp, out of those players, Asipau Mafi and
Liah Tagaloa were selected for the SEQ Womens team, playing in the competition
in Maroochydore. These ladies went out and represented Aspley with all their
heart and talent. Congratulations ladies!
Another great feat for the team has seen 2 of the youngest players, Danielle
Mencarious and Laura Hickey named in the Under 18's SEQ rep team that will play
on the 13 July at Banyo JRLFC. Well done girls!
The great response and player numbers the team has had this year has been
outstanding and it has really showed how huge women in league has become.
The support the Shedevils have had for 2013 has been phenomenal!
To all the spectators who are always there to cheer us on, everyone at the club
who has helped us keep our team on track, our coach, Bill and assistant coach,
Alan and everyone that helps the team out with anything they can, Thankyou!
Without every single one of you, we would not be where we are.
To all the ladies, your determination, spirit, talent and hard work is truly an
inspiration. Keep up the great work! The Shedevils are looking forward to the
rest of the season and will work as hard as they can to keep their finals hopes
alive. On behalf of the Women's we wish everyone a great and enjoyable season!
