The Orchard 60th Anniversary Celebration
It was only a Bible study.
Pastor Gordon Addington,
The Orchard’s first pastor,
shared these words with
Pastor Colin Smith at The
Orchard’s 50th Anniversary
Celebration as he looked at
the crowd assembled in the
gym at Hersey High School.
This year, as we celebrated
The Orchard’s 60th year
of ministry, Pastor Colin
reminded us that, according
to Pastor Will Norton, what
started as a Bible study with
just 43 people gathered
around a mission is now a
multi-site church comprised
of more than 2,000 people
worshipping in three
locations.
With thanksgiving, we
celebrated God’s faithfulness
during our 60 years of
ministry and were reminded
that “Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday, today, and
forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
Pastor Colin challenged the
congregation to send out 43
people each year for the next
decade. Think of the impact
The Orchard can have in the
Chicago area and around
the world if we launch 430
servants of Christ over the
next ten years.
We have been truly blessed
this year. The Lord is at work
in and through His people
at The Orchard Evangelical
Free Church.
The Orchard’s staff is
comprised of four capable,
skilled teams: the Arlington
Heights Campus team, the
Barrington Campus team,
the Itasca Campus team, and
the Central Staff team. The
following report includes
highlights from the past year
from each team.

The Apostle Paul wrote,
“We give thanks to
God always for all of you,
constantly mentioning
you in our prayers,
remembering before
our God and Father your
work of faith and labor
of love and steadfastness
of hope in our Lord Jesus
Christ. (I Thessalonians 1:2-
3) The work we are involved
in is produced by faith. Our
labor is prompted by the love
we have for our Savior. We
remain steadfast because
of the hope we have in our
Redeemer. It is a joy and a
privilege to work alongside
you as we serve such a
wonderful Savior.
Worship
As Pastor Colin preached
series through both 1 Kings
and the Beatitudes, our music
encouraged and exhorted the
congregation to dwell on all that
we have in Christ. Special events
included The Orchard Symphony,
featuring Oscar Wilde’s The
Selfish Giant set to music by
Dan Goeller and the premiere of
the Symphonic Hymn Suite by
Pastor Dan Wells. The Christmas
concert was one of our very best.
Hymn Sing continued to gain
momentum: the fall event drew
more than 1,000 which led to
offering two performances in the
spring. Thanks to the leadership
of Tim Patterson and the worship
team, the contemporary service
has continued to thrive. Several
times throughout the year, those
in the gym enjoy a bluegrass
worship experience.
Orchard Kids
Children receive Gospel teaching
in their Sunday school classes
thanks to many committed
volunteers. Awana is thriving as it
provides a safe, fun environment
for many to hear and learn God’s
Word. SpringHill Day Camp took
over the Arlington Heights
Campus in June for a week of
fun activities (climbing wall,
inflatable water slide) and
learning. Campers participated
in a small group with a SpringHill
counselor and a high school
student from The Orchard where
they memorized Jeremiah
29:11-13. Many kids are looking
forward to the return of SpringHill
this summer.
For I know the plans I have for
you, declares the Lord, plans for
welfare and not for evil, to give
you a future and a hope. Then
you will call upon me and come
and pray to me, and I will hear
you. you will seek me and find me,
when you seek me with all your
heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13
Student Ministries
We praise God for the many
students and volunteers involved
in ministry. Interns Josh Parsons
and Colton Tatham have played a
big role in shepherding students
alongside Pastor Brad Wetherell.
Youth Group, Connections,
LIFE Groups, trips and other
events have helped students
find a community of believers to
connect with. Over spring break,
80 high school students and
leaders from all three campuses
headed to Florida for the annual
Gypsy trip. A high point of the
trip included two students who
took first time steps of faith. We
are excited to see that the Lord
continues to speak into the lives
of teenagers as they grow in their
knowledge and love for Christ.
Women’s Ministries
Fifty-five women participated
in Titus 2 Training, an
intergenerational group that
meets to train women to
encourage and equip others as
they study God’s divine design
for womanhood. Many women
participated in LIFE Groups,
including those specifically for
mothers and daughters. Two
exciting events were held:
Women Running with the Gospel
helped women apply the Gospel
practically and an evening with
Kate McCord, author of In
the Land of the Blue Burquas,
challenged us to share the love
of Christ wherever we are. In the
summer, 150 women gathered
to study God’s Word and learn
how to apply the Gospel to our
thought life.
Christianity Explored &
Running with the Gospel
Two helpful electives were
offered this year. Christianity
Explored focused on the basics
of Christianity and was geared
toward new believers and
those exploring Christianity.
Running with the Gospel tackled
some tough questions about
Christianity and prepared
individuals to share the Gospel
with others.
Community Care
Each week, the Community Care
team welcomes guests who are
experiencing difficulty due to
homelessness or joblessness.
Team members meet with guests
one-on-one to assess how we
might provide help in their time
of need, while also sharing the
Gospel and praying with each
guest. Though limited in how
we can help financially, the team
finds great joy in sharing the vast
riches found in Jesus Christ. It has
been amazing to see attendance
grow at the weekly lunch and
Bible study.
Francis Chan
With very little notice or planning,
about 1,000 people came to hear
Francis Chan speak in October. It
was a great night of worship and
teaching. Those in attendance
left encouraged to talk boldly
about the Gospel with their
friends and neighbors.
College & Career Ministries Pastor Tom Olson Behold the Lamb of God The Snare of Compare Awana Student Ministries Seeds Event
It’s been an absolute joy
to serve the Barrington
Campus as its pastor this
last year. My wife, kids and I
have loved it. As you read the
great reports below, you’ll see
why the first year has made
us excited for what’s ahead
for the Barrington Campus.
Pastor Tom Olson
Orchard Kids
Awana participation more than
doubled from the previous year
and God continues to bless and
grow the ministry. Vacation Bible
School drew 150 kids, nearly
40% coming from the community.
Families served together to pack
boxes for Operation Christmas
Child. Easter EGGstravaganza
welcomed many new families and
demonstrated that we are getting
good at inviting people to the
Barrington Campus!
Student Ministries
Prayers are being answered: the
high school ministry is growing
and new middle school leaders
have started serving. Last spring,
3 students were attending the
high school Youth Group. In the
summer, Pastor Josh Newton
hosted a high school Bible study
at his home. What started as just
a few students grew each week
and peaked at 22, many of whom
are committed to youth group.
With the growth of the ministry,
more Barrington students have
attended the all-campus trips,
retreats and activities.
As the middle school ministry
has grown, several new leaders
have stepped out in faith to
serve. Half of the students who
currently attend the middle
school Youth Group have been
invited by our students and do
not yet attend The Orchard for
worship. (Many come from other
non-evangelical churches or have
no church affiliation.)
Women’s Ministries
We’ve seen the number of
Women’s LIFE Groups nearly
triple this year, allowing us to
minister and care for the women
of our campus more effectively.
The Barrington Campus hosted
an all-church event, Women
Running with the Gospel, in
November where Pastor Colin
spoke about how women can
run with the Gospel in the local
church, at their jobs, and within
their families. In January, at The
Snare of Compare event, women
were encouraged through
testimonies and teaching about
how the Gospel gloriously frees
us from the comparison snare.
Approximately 50 out of the
75 women gathered were either
visitors or new to The Orchard
since the building opened
in 2010.
College & Career Ministries
God answered prayer by raising
a solid foundation for Career
Ministry over the last year,
including launching three new
LIFE Groups. The College and
Career Ministries spent Thursday
nights this summer studying the
book of Daniel in a series called
Embracing Uncertainty and
the first Thursday of the month
during the school year learning
how to pray for God to Open
Doors in our lives for the Gospel
to be shared with others. Twentyone
people from the ministry
traveled to Montreal to lead an
English Camp and assist the local
church in building relationships
with the community. Two from
the ministry were baptized
in February.
Worship
The Behold the Lamb of God
Christmas concert provided
a deep look at the coming of
Christ and how it fits in the
greater Gospel story. With
musicians and attendees from
multiple campuses we were again
reminded to behold this Lamb
of God, who came to take away
the sins of the world! Overall,
it’s been a great joy to focus on
congregational singing over the
past year.
Seeds
The Bible calls us to boldly
share the good news of Jesus
Christ with people around the
world. All of us desire to obey
this command and to make
new disciples, but often we
do not feel confident in our
ability to do so, and so we hold
back. The Seeds ministry is all
about equipping people and
preparing them for outreach. It
is about helping to plant a seed
in someone’s heart, praying for
God to make that seed grow,
and committing to shepherding
that individual in the early stages
of their walk. A new ministry,
Seeds hosted top-notch speakers
to serve both believers and
unbelievers by answering tough
questions about Christianity.
Mark Mittelberg, author and
apologist, kicked off the series
by walking us through “The
Questions Christians Hope No
One Will Ask.” Jerry Root, a
professor at Wheaton College,
spoke about “C.S. Lewis and the
Problem of Evil.” The speakers
were both engaging and helpful
for those in attendance.
Prayer
The Barrington Campus raised
the focus on prayer. With weekly
prayer meetings on Tuesdays
and a men’s prayer time on
Sunday mornings, more people
are gathering together at the
Barrington Campus to pray
for our church, missionaries,
community, and country. A
Thanksgiving Prayer Open
House was held in November.
Individuals, LIFE Groups, and
families participated in this
guided prayer walk which
led them to various locations
throughout the building. Each
prayer station provided a guide
that was designed to spur their
hearts in gratitude for all God
had done during the year.
Pastor Greg Norwine Worship Service LIFE Group Student Ministries Easter EGGS at The Orchard LIFE Group
This has been a year of
change for the Itasca
Campus. God led Dave and
Katie Smith, who helped
to launch this campus, to
Indiana for a new chapter
in their life. Dave was
our worship leader and
Katie was our Director of
Children’s Ministries and
Administrative Assistant for
the campus. When Dave and
Katie walked out the door
for the last time, we lost half
of our staff! But God has
been gracious to us. Carla
Himpelmann has come on
as Administrative Assistant.
Linda Hrivnak stepped in
to be the interim Director
of Children’s Ministries and
intern Jared Hendricks has
very capably taken over
the worship leading role in
addition to running Student
Ministries.
Pastor Greg Norwine
Family LIFE
Family LIFE is a time where our
church family comes together
for an age-appropriate time
of Bible study and fellowship.
Orchard Kids provides a time for
children to learn from the Bible
while Middle School and High
School students meet together
with several leaders to study the
Bible and learn how it relates to
their life. Adult LIFE Groups for
men, women, and couples are
available. Family LIFE provides
an opportunity for everyone who
calls the Itasca Campus home to
grow closer to Jesus together.
Once a month, Family LIFE starts
a bit earlier, and dinner is served
to allow participants to share a
meal together before splitting
into their age-specific groups.
Prayer
We’ve always known prayer
is important, but this year we
wanted to give it a more central
place in our church schedule.
Beginning in January we
dedicated the first Wednesday of
the month during Family LIFE to
prayer. Everyone is involved. The
youth join us for the beginning
of the evening. The young adult
LIFE Group cancels their meeting
for that week. We all come
together to pray.
One of our biggest prayer
requests has been for God to
bring us more young families.
Several families from our campus
moved away this summer, so
the number of children in our
children’s program decreased
significantly. For example, our
3rd-5th grade Sunday School
class often only had one child
in it. Since we began praying,
a number of young families
have walked through our doors.
They are a blessing to us and
a reminder of His goodness,
kindness and willingness to
give good gifts to His children.
Lately, we have had 7 children
in the 3rd-5th grade Sunday
School class.
Spiritual Growth
There certainly has been
numerical growth at the campus
this year, but we’ve also seen
tremendous spiritual growth.
For example, the women’s LIFE
Group has been studying the
book of James. Sheila Clark,
Women’s Ministry Coordinator,
reports that approximately 30
women have been involved and
nine of them are memorizing
the entire book of James. In
groups and one-on-one, women
are speaking the Gospel to one
another regularly as a means of
encouragement and grace. The
group has also committed to
serving in a variety of ways at the
Itasca Food Pantry.
Connecting
LIFE Connections has been an
important connection point at
Itasca. For many newcomers, LIFE
Connections is their first step in
building deeper relationships.
LIFE Connections now includes
nearly 25 people. New folks
are getting quickly connected,
enthusiastically engaging
in sermon discussion, and
participating in prayer as a group.
Intergenerational Ministry
The young can benefit from
contact with those who have
walked with God for many
years and older Christians are
encouraged by the passion
of younger Christians. We’ve
made more effort to mix the
generations this year at the Itasca
Campus. Prayer meetings are
intergenerational. We’ve hosted
quarterly men’s and women’s
events to provide additional
opportunities to learn from
and encourage one another.
This year our young adult LIFE
Group reached out to the older
generations by initiating dinners
with younger couples and more
mature couples together.
Outreach
In an effort to reach out and
share the love of Christ with the
Itasca community, we hosted
several outreach. Mega Sports
Camp (the Itasca Campus’ twist
on Vacation Bible School), the
third annual Live Nativity, and
Easter Eggs at The Orchard
drew many families from the
neighborhood and surrounding
community.
In January, Karl Clauson,
nationally syndicated radio show
host of 180 with Karl Clauson,
headlined an event titled Raising
Good Kids in a Perilous World.
Pastor Colin and Pastor Greg also
spoke at this exciting evening
that served families from both the
congregation and the community
by discussing steps parents can
take while their kids are young
to help them avoid dangerous
behaviors and live happy,
healthy, faith-filled lives.
Brad Wetherell
The central staff team
moved into the secondfloor
of the north building
of the Barrington Campus
in March. After weeks of
renovating the previously
unused space, donated
furniture and boxes of
supplies were unloaded
into the new offices and
work space. Central staff
are now able to work in
close proximity with other
members of the team that
serve all three campuses of
The Orchard.
Under the leadership of
Pastor Scott Lothery, the
central team has been
working to make ministry
and operations scalable
and reproducible in a way
that positions The Orchard
for growth. With campus
staff responsible for
ministry specifically tied
to each respective campus
in Arlington Heights,
Barrington, and Itasca, the
central staff is focused on
ministry “in the Chicago area
and around the world.”
Ministry Across Campuses
LIFE Groups
More than 100 LIFE Groups –
men’s, women’s, couples, mixed,
multi-cultural, multi-generational,
or age-specific – meet regularly
to dig deeply into God’s Word.
They share burdens, joys,
challenges, and the delights
of service. LIFE Groups might
be considered the glue of The
Orchard as people seek to
connect to others, the church,
and the Word of God.
Bear Fruit
At The Orchard, we diligently dig
deep roots into God’s Word and
receive blessing through sharing
life together in LIFE Groups. We
are also challenged to bear fruit,
abundantly living out our faith
in Jesus Christ. The Orchard
has many fruit bearers who are
finding hope and purpose by
serving in ministries at the church
and in the community. Without
many faithful servants, ministry
would not be possible: children
would not be taught, guests
would not be greeted, and
sermons would not be translated.
Celebrate Recovery
The Orchard is increasingly seen
as a “safe place” to be a sinner,
because under the instruction of
God’s Word and in the presence
of loving and faithful brothers
and sisters in Christ, we can bring
our sins to the Cross. We not only
receive healing and grace, but
also freedom from the power of
those sins. Under the leadership
of Pastor Tom Hutchison,
Celebrate Recovery is running
well at both the Barrington and
Arlington Heights Campuses.
Attendance at the Arlington
Heights Campus averages about
35 per week and the Barrington
Campus averages about 25 each
week. In addition, there are four
to five active Step Study groups
meeting at any one time. The
ministry runs smoothly as a result
of all those serving as greeters,
musicians, small group leaders,
food servers and prayer warriors.
Communications
In the past year, the website
experienced a 25% increase
in monthly visitors. One of the
reasons for increased web traffic
is that The Orchard began using
social media - both Facebook
and Twitter (@TheOrchardEFC)
– which support other existing
communications vehicles. Pastor
Colin (@PastorColinS) is tweeting
as well!
Intern Program
The Orchard has been blessed
with a fantastic team of interns
who preach, lead students and
young adults, serve alongside
our campus pastors, and lead
worship. In addition to the
role they serve in, the interns
participated in a preaching and
mentoring group with Pastor
Colin and Hutz Hertzberg,
Director of The Orchard Network.
Community Threads
Community Threads, a non-profit
thrift store in Buffalo Grove,
celebrated its first year of ministry
in October. The store opened
to meet the needs of local
families and to generate funds
for the ministries of The Orchard,
Breakthrough Urban Ministries
in Chicago, and St. Peter
Lutheran School in proportion
with the number of volunteer
hours provided and donations
given. The Orchard received
three grants totaling $100,000
from Community Threads which
are used to support ministry,
including the intern program.
Staff Changes
We’ve been blessed with several
new staff, including two central
staff, John Aiello, Executive
Director of Growth and Outreach;
and Brad Mullet, Director of
Missions; and two campus staff,
Liz Walker, Director of Children’s
Ministries – Arlington Heights;
and Brad Wetherell, Pastor of
Student Ministries – Arlington
Heights.
After serving as Director of
Children’s Ministries at The
Orchard for 15 years, Linda
Hrivnak “retired” in June.
For Linda, retirement has not
meant that she’s stepped out of
ministry. In fact, she’s currently
serving as the interim Director of
Children’s Ministries at the Itasca
Campus. Kevin Meek, former
Barrington Campus Pastor, has
remained on staff at The Orchard
while providing leadership as the
Interim Senior Pastor at Covenant
Baptist Church in Marengo for
the past year. In April, he was
hired as the Senior Pastor of
Trinity Evangelical Free Church
in South Bend, Indiana. We’re
grateful for Kevin’s role in the
development and launch of the
Barrington Campus.

Carrie Bergmann Laura Decker The Orchard Staff in Hungary College & Career in Montreal Baptism Bing Nieh Arabic Concert Multicultural Picnic
In June, Brad Mullet was
hired to serve as Director
of Missions and assumed
that role on February 1. He
has shared that, “While I
was busily preparing myself
for how I wanted to serve
God someday, God was
faithfully preparing me for
how and where He wanted
me to serve him.” Before
coming to The Orchard,
Brad, his wife Kari and their
four children spent 13 years
in Budapest, Hungary. Brad
is delighted to be leading
The Orchard’s proactive
and focused partnerships in
evangelism, church planting,
and leadership development
in Indonesia, northern India,
Hungary and the Balkans.
New Missionaries
This year, we sent missionaries
around the world. In July, Carrie
Bergmann moved to Bogota,
Colombia, to teach at El Camino
Academy alongside missionaries
Bob and Vicki McCollum. Laura
Decker moved to Budapest,
Hungary, in August to serve at
the International Christian School
of Budapest with missionaries
Bjorn and Trisha Olsen.
Missions Weekend
We were privileged to hear
preaching from Isaac Shaw and
Raju Abraham for this year’s
Missions Weekend, which
focused on ministry at the Dehli
Bible Institute and the Emmanuel
Hospital Association in Northern
India. We praise God for His work
and the opportunities we have
to partner with Gospel-centered
ministries in India.
Short-term Missions
Seven short-term mission trips
were taken to five locations.
Budapest, Hungary – In July,
Student Ministries sent 18 high
school students and leaders to
run an English Camp for the
third annual summer trip. A team
of six returned in October to
facilitate an English Camp with
many of the same students who
participated in the summer. In
April, a team of four adults went
to pray with and for evangelists,
church planters, and leaders in
Hungary.
Northern India – In September,
a team of four went to explore
the possibility of developing
a partnership with Delhi Bible
Institute and Emmanuel Hospital
Association.
Astruc, Haiti – A team of 12
traveled to serve our sister church
in Astruc in February.
Bogotá, Colombia – Ten
individuals served at El Camino
Academy alongside our
missionaries, Bob and Vicki
McCollum and Carrie Bergmann
in February.
Montreal, Canada - College and
Career Ministries sent a group
of 22 to run an English Camp
in August.
Boxwood
Last fall, Bing Nieh and his family
were commissioned by The
Orchard to amplify the Gospel’s
presence in the Boxwood
neighborhood of Mount
Prospect. The community is
primarily comprised of immigrant
families who are under-resourced
and face many challenges. They
are joining in the work that
has already been taking place
in the neighborhood and are
eager to see Christ magnified
in the community. Through
both formal and informal events
and activities, relationships are
being developed and cultivated
with the hope of reaching the
neighborhood with the Gospel.
Multicultural Ministries
Multicultural Ministries at The
Orchard delights in God’s
international vision for the
Gospel. It’s amazing to see
the good news of Jesus Christ
expressed and celebrated among
the nations of our church. This
year, multicultural ministries
worked with 13 language groups:
Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese,
Filipino, Indian, Indonesian,
Iranian, Japanese, Korean, Polish,
Romanian, Russian and Spanish
To help people plant their
ROOTS in God’s word, sermons
were translated into four
languages - Japanese, Polish,
Korean, and Russian - and
each language group began
translating LifeKEYS Daily, Pastor
Colin’s weekly eDevotional for
broader use. To help people
share the LIFE of Christ together,
we offered both languagespecific
LIFE Groups (Japanese,
Chinese, Polish, Korean) and
various multi-cultural LIFE
Groups with people from various
ethnicities. To help people
bear the FRUIT of Christ in the
church and in the community,
we expanded the English Café
ministry and began meeting
weekly. Two women have
committed their lives to Christ
through this ministry, and one
was baptized last summer. Praise
the Lord!
The steady rhythms of ministry
were also accented by special
moments. More than 80 people
gathered for a Korean BBQ picnic
in Barrington as we kicked off
the fall. In October, the walls of
the sanctuary at the Arlington
Heights Campus reverberated
with Spanish praise as we hosted
the Hispanic Pastors’ Conference
for the Evangelical Free Church
Association’s Great Lakes District.
We welcomed more than 300
people of Muslim background
to hear a powerful testimony of
Jesus’ saving power at an Arabic
concert. Through every moment
we rejoice to know that Jesus is
being exalted, that multicultural
people from throughout our
community have a place to call
home at The Orchard, and that
God is doing His work to call
the nations to Himself. We pray
even more people from every
nation can find the true hope of
Jesus through this ministry in the
coming years.
