Once upon a time… It was 1936. It had been nearly ninety years since the first credit union was established and the Great Depression was in its seventh year. This was the year that North Jersey Federal Credit Union opened its doors to serve teachers in Passaic County. Now, NJFCU is celebrating its 75th anniversary of providing financial and banking services to the communities it serves. North Jersey Federal is committed to investing in its members and the communities in which its members live, work, worship and conduct business. The word “investing” is an appropriate term because when someone becomes a member of North Jersey Federal, he or she becomes an owner in the business. Unlike a banking corporation that has a CEO who makes decisions with its shareholders’ benefit in mind, a credit union CEO makes decisions that benefit its members. This type of business environment enables its members to have a greater opportunity to let NJFCU know what kinds of services they are looking for so that the credit union can create products, services and community initiatives to meet those needs. The North Jersey Federal Credit Union established a Foundation in 2009 with a focus on providing scholarships for teens and young adults and to support local charities. The NJFCU Foundation provides its members and employees with opportunities to “give back” to their own communities and to create initiatives in the townships they serve. Since its beginning, the more successful North Jersey Federal has become, the more they have returned to the community. The current business environment for the banking industry is precarious but ironically, NJFCU benefitted from the recent financial meltdown. That was when bank customers turned to credit unions as a safe haven. North Jersey Federal is looking forward to the next 75 years…and beyond. Business Matters Page 7
